@garymalgrem:

If you take into account the 6 - 10 years of winter, the crop failures would be close to extinction level for humanity.

Volcanic events in present day Indonesia have a long history of global aftermaths.

Aside from the Boxing Day qake and tsunami that killed a quarter million and the 1883 Krakakau eruption, Mount Tambura erupted in 1816 (bigger than the Krakakau eruption) triggered a year without summer. Going farther back in history is the catastrophic explosion of Toba in central Sumatra (now a huge lake) about 70,000 years ago that triggered a 6 - 10 year winter that some scientists say actually bottle necked the human population.

Interesting reading if you are into that kind of stuff.

I agree with what most people are saying but makers usually recommend standing in the middle and holding onto the hand rail. They always do that for liability purposes.

But like most say here, not gonna happen.

If you read the manufacturer safety manual it says to stand, not walk on escalators. That should be good enough.

I wonder how Saikawa would feel if he was arrested by police in Amsterdam as soon as he stepped off the plane, thrown in jail with no legal representation and no contact with the Japanese Embassy, and kept there for months.

Ok, I can understand that some countries do not have a death penalty, but in such cases, life without parole should mean life without parole, to say that this POS can be eligible for parole is an affront to the victim.

I was on Batam island, Indonesia when an A380 that could not have been much older than this plane dropped an engine on a shopping center there.

Normally I would say"send them all to California sanctuary cities like SF but there is no guarantee that they would stay there.

Posted in: Growing caravan of migrants pushes deeper into Mexico See in context

Just to set the record straight about 5000 people marching from Honduras and/or Guatemala. This caravan started with about 200 people and picked up momentum. Most of these people joined near the border with Mexico so they have only trekked a few miles.

Suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem, especially when you are so young!

Hard to see but there are usually signs of depression

China has claimed the entire East China Sea with what has been called the seven dash line or nine dash line but has never pushed for international recognition nor have they ever produced any evidence of traditional control over the area, no country has ever accepted this so it only exists on chinese mapsl.

Posted in: World Rugby advises teams to cover up tattoos at 2019 World Cup in Japan See in context

Many of the foreign players in Japanese baseball have tats, that doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I don't know who initiated this but I think it would be sufficient to just notify the players that they may be denied admittance to some Japanese traditional venues because of tats and to accept it.

Volcanic eruptions are usually, but not always, preceed by"swarm earthquakes" as the magma starts moving toward the surface. The area immediately would be in imminent danger but Tokyo, Yokohama etc. Would depend on the wind direction.

I have a friend who runs an orphanage in Yokosuka, a full 70% of his charges are under 2yo. Most were given up at birth. Along with the comments about abortion, there are other options. No one needed to die or go to jail. Problem is many young people can't or won't talk to someone about their problems.
