By all means, Danica Patrick should stay home and let someone else finish in 20th or so place. She's far too busy filming GoDaddy commercials and planning out her mediocre career in NASCAR.

This is the same government that offered up slavish media coverage to Gaga's recent trip to Japan via its state-owned Xinhua website. If only the Party aparatchiks had released the results of their well-considered analysis in time! Who knows how many malleable minds are now plotting to break China up into a multitude of independent nuclear-armed states after pondering the lyric "That I'll die living just as free as my hair."

Not mentioned here, but the Tenacious D smash hit "The Government Totally Sucks" is also totally verboten.

Sad to see anyone get so desperate pacing around inside their own head to the point that they go through with it. Just reaching out, or even knowing that you can reach out, could make all the difference. RIP

Phenomenonally bad artwork, but it's obviously an advertisement, and therefore the more eye-catching, the better. Not even really meant to actually drive around, but just sit there and do its job.

Why does anything American always have to be excessive?

Yes, because this garish ad clearly epitomizes absolutely everything about America. Anyone who lives there can tell you about entire freeways packed with literally no other vehicles except stretch Hummers, their single occupants (no one carpools) with a triple cheeseburger in one hand and a Desert Eagle in the other, shooting at their fellow ten-gallon hat-clad countrymen, or just simply firing into the smog-gray American sky in celebration of being not only alive, but being an Amurrican.

@nandakandamanda.NO. In soccer the keeper is never alone but has 10 players before him(or her). The same is true for the Japanese keeper.

At some point in the match, the ball will fly high and true, far out of the reach of the players beneath, but certainly not as far out of reach as nanda's point flying over your head.

Whiskeysour - but didn't that singer blow his brains out a few years after recording that reggae classic? Or is that just an urban myth?

Urban myth, most definitely. Bobby McFerrin is alive and well.

Perhaps the Japanese could embrace Ernst Stavro Blofeld's concept of a "Garden of Death," a tranquil Japanese garden filled with a variety of poisonous flora and fauna, where they can end it all in peace. In the novel of You Only Live Twice, the suicide-mad locals were climbing over the walls to get in.

Posted in: Alert: Terrorists look to implant bombs in humans See in context

I find it comforting that articles like this give great ideas to terrorists.

Staggeringly idiotic. Yes, if only this Associated Press article hadn't been published, terrorists never would have thought of it, despite the fact that the article itself is reporting the fact that terrorists are working on it. If you want to believe the story is meant only to scare up support for ever-intrusive airport security measures, fine, but to suggest that malefactors a world away are waiting for mainstream western media outlets to provide them with ideas is beyond brainless.

Perhaps if we can just find a way to block the terrorists' Internet connections and New York Times subscriptions, they'll simply give it all up, seeing as how the idea pipeline would be totally dry.

NOW the oil-moneyed sons of a murderous hypocrite are concerned about paying attention to the very important legalities of the matter. Because if there's one thing Osama Bin Laden was all about, it was following the both the letter and spirit of international law.

One thing Bin Laden obviously hoped to achieve with 9/11 was to get the United States to abandon the principles it claimed to live by and lure it into ruining its economy by waging multiple ill-advised full-scale wars. Congratulations, you got exactly what you wanted. Don't forget to pick up your your prize: a bullet to the temple and a fun slide into the briny depths. Enjoy.

Code names, while not chosen at random, only have any meaning within the context of the mission. So what? Call OBL Chopped Liver, who cares? It only matters to the players in the mission for its duration, and it's over now. The poor Apache will have to find some way to rebuild their now-shattered lives. Some people absolutely go out of their way to play the victim.

Posted in: Boy, 14, killed by train in Nikko following school disciplinary warning See in context

A teenage boy was left alone for nearly two hours to let all kinds of wild punishment scenarios swirl around in his head and accumulate until he felt he had to simply flee. He likely happened upon a train bearing down the tracks, gave into the imp of the perverse for just a moment and stood in its way, maybe fully intending to move out of the way before it struck him, and for whatever reason, that simply didn't happen. To suggest what he did even rises to the level of a "choice" is something we can't really do, but I imagine he wanted to take it back a millionfold at the moment of impact, and would now and forever if it were only possible.

We can pretend like it's even possible to ascribe some kind of reason to this and events like it, but that's just because the deep-down shared knowledge that we can't is too unnerving for some people to accept, and they have to comfort themselves with their own simple and tidy explanations.

Posted in: Who are (or were) some of your favorite comic book characters? See in context

Where to start? At the beginning--the old Spiderman cartoon with the theme everyone knows led to an interest in the funnybooks on the spinner in the drugstore, where I discovered the Marvel Star Wars run, then the brilliant Larry Hama's take on GI Joe, which naturally led to the Punisher, and then on to the Todd McFarlane Spiderman and Daredevil. Soon all the X-Men books were on the list, along with Sin City when it debuted in serial form in Dark Horse Presents. And I still have the full run of the Vertigo version of Shade, the Changing Man, and nothing has topped Planetary for me in recent years. I've only kept up with the comics world tangentially, but they've obviously made their mark.

Not a huge fan of this idea, but if anyone can make it work, it's Morrison. Besides, Batman is one of the few heroes who have such a ridiculously complex continuity at this point that pretty much nothing has to be accepted as canonical. Don't like this? Fine--ignore it completely and think of any one of the billion other versions of the history of Batman as the "right" one.

Posted in: Lanky, brooding Superman for contemporary world See in context

So they give Supes a hoodie and that makes him "contemporary"? The many attempts to make Superman relevant (read: boost sales) have always fared much worse than similar attempts to do the same for Batman and seemed much more transparent (the whole Superman Dies thing many years back). Call it what it is--"we want Twilight readers' money."

All-Star Superman is the alpha and omega of Superman for me. Twelve issues that perfectly distill the character, with fantastic art from Frank Quitely. If you had never read a single Superman story before and never read one afterward, Grant Morrison's brilliant take would still be all you ever need. Not exactly good news for ongoing sales, but true.

So, a company named "Hooters Japan" fought a seven-year-long legal battle with the American head office, even though there were actually no Hooters in Japan (yet)? There's some optimism for you.

I agree with the sicilian--the people who complain the loudest are really just airing out their own hangups. My wife and I have gone many times without any kind of battle of the sexes erupting--at the core, it's a restaurant, so shut up and eat.

I did have the pleasure of visiting once while a table full of Japanese salaryman types were there, a fat column of smoke rising up to the ceiling in a perfect carcinogenic column. Not sure if they even ate anything, but they did seem to enjoy their interactions with the waitress. Perhaps they viewed it as a much, much cheaper hostess club?

The utter inanity of each sentence in this "story" beggars belief, even by Japan Today standards. I realize it's part of the ongoing "Best (blank)ist" meme (Best Eyeist, BTW), but single-wink showdowns and nightly eyeball massages are really just pushing the envelope off the precipice.

Good--obviously the threat of jail time and rehab (not that she'd ever be forced to even come close to serving out any sentence in either place) holds no weight with her, so deny her the ability to make money off her financial interests here--that should get her attention, guaranteed. Regardless of their true gender beginnings, I think it's safe to say that the fact that you even have to wrestle with the question at all puts a pretty serious damper on things. Techall's got the right idea, but don't expect to sway any of the haters with inconvenient, though obvious, observations.

But is the trip profitable?

If it were making less money than any of the American dates (not counting any Honda financial assistance), it would disappear from the calendar in a flash. I think the real question is just how much does Honda have to put up each year for its home showcase? I can't imagine it would throw an unlimited amount of money at the event, so any profit shortfalls for the race must not be too bad.
