Posted in: The Dr is in See in context

Hey, where did he get that King Kamehameha hat? I have always thought Dr. Nakamatsu was an interesting character, and a brilliant man. Like many brilliant people, he is very eccentric, but that's what makes him appealing to me. I wish I could get a pair of his jumping shoes for my commute to work. Just checked out his homepage, and now the shoes are called Super Pyon2 and they run 17,800 yen. http://dr.nakamats.com/shop/index.html I'd vote for him, he couldn't do any worse than the people in charge now...

Been using Panasonic PLC since last year, and so far no problems. Used it in a fairly new apartment and a really old one, and the speed is fine.

I kind of agree with PeaceWarrior. I think the biggest problem is humidity. 28 is not that bad if it isn't humid. You are in a building and presumably protected from the sun, so it should feel fine, again if there is little or no humidity. It's no wonder that productivity goes down in Japan's hot and humid offices. Another thing that lowers productivity, I think, are the constant smoking breaks people take. That, however, is another can of worms.

Shouldn't be discrimination against these guys or girls. At least if they are enjoying sumo, they aren't out causing mayhem. I agree with bdiego, if they break the law, arrest them. Get them off the street. No need to discriminate against them. One other thing I was wondering about is, if a yakuza quits and wants to rejoin society, how the heck is he supposed to do so? Is there a support network for that kind of thing, or will they always be discriminated against? Just curious.

Posted in: Do you think paper-based books will eventually become a thing of the past as digital books become more popular? See in context

I think they will never replace the printed book, but they are convenient when commuting on the train or bus. I prefer printed material, such as books, magazines and newspapers, but on a crowded train or bus, fugetaboutit! Someone mentioned Gutenberg, which is a great source for free and rare books. They also have some audiobooks available, which I also find great for commutes. If you want to read some free Japanese books, check out Aozora Bunko. Don't recommend it, but you could print out the books you download, and read them that way too, but that kind of defeats the purpose.

There is absolutely no guard rail, or even fence, on that road. I'm sure this must have happened in the past, and if they don't put up some kind of barrier, it will happen again the future. Very sad. They were planning to spend Mother's Day together.

ppayne, I agree 100%. In fact I heard about Click2Flash from a commentator on another site talking about this story, and installed it immediately. Flash is a HOG, and I can understand why all mobile devices should avoid it. Battery life and speed are a lot more important to me than seeing Flash ads or playing Flash games.

Posted in: DVD commemorates 30th anniv of singer Momoe Yamaguchi's retirement See in context

noirgaijin, you have to realize that Momoe Yamaguchi was a HUGE star at the time. She was first and foremost a very talented singer and songwriter. She is also considered to be a great actress, that's how she met her future husband, Miura Tomokazu. As borscht said, her songs are still selling well, she left when she was on top of her game, and she didn't look back. I think she has done something short of a miracle in becoming a private citizen and being able to avoid the Japanese media. I guess this just shows how powerful the people around her, and perhaps her husband, are. Love to get the dvd set, but it is a bit pricey.

But some people haven't "lost" any abilities, they were just born without them. By not having the abilities, they don't experience a loss per se. Isn't it similar to being born tall or short? Not having been tall, I don't know what I may be missing. Not really trying to sensitize words, just wondering if there is an alternative. At any rate, calling her just a winner or a champion is probably the best thing to do ;-)

Posted in: Mt Rainier Double Espresso See in context

I agree with n3312, Mt. Rainier coffee was on the conbini store shelves a long time before Starbucks. Sure they copied the look and colors of Starbucks, a lot of other coffee places have too. I am from Seattle, and I was kind of happy to see the name Mt. Rainier. I think that Morinaga went a little too far though. Very few Japanese people can make the connection between Mt. Rainier and Seattle, and even the connection between Seattle and coffee. I love explaining to students that Starbucks, Seattle's Best Coffee, and Tully's all originated in Seattle. ( BTW Since about 2003 Seattle's Best Coffee has been a subsidiary of Starbucks.) FYI The best coffee beans in Seattle can be bought at "The Good Coffee Company" on Post Alley.

Some people are just not getting it. Her name is Rei (pronounced ray) and she is blue. Get it? Blue Rei. Blue Ray. Whatever, she looks good with or without blue paint. Recently purchased a blue ray recorder, and have regretted it a bit. One reason is the cost of the raw dvds. The other being that there are still a lot of people without blue ray, so I can't lend some of my friends dvds of TV show I recorded. I wonder how many people currently own a blue ray recorder/player?

Yes, according to some, it is not figure skating anymore. It is now ice dancing. Not sure if that is true, but if they keep getting farther away from the sport aspect, that's what may happen. Congrats to all three performers. Was this on TV?

Stop focusing on his mouth, and focus on the story. Sounds like it would be a blast to watch on TV, unfortunately not available. I wish that the Paralympics were more accepted as a legitimate sporting event, and given the appropriate coverage. Highlights on the news are great, but watching the events live would be better.

Some people need to chill out. This band was made for Fanta commercials, it is not to be taken seriously. The comments the members make are all for fun. I think Ozma is great, and the Kohaku stunt made that year's show one of the best ever. NHK deserves a little controversy.

For a Sherlock Holmes fan, this movie is lacking. Sure it's exciting, and action-packed, but I don't think people who enjoy Conan Doyle's stories are looking for that. Intrigue, mystery, problem-solving. I enjoyed it, but it wasn't a Sherlock Holmes movie.

inakaRob, on a news report I saw the shoe in question is a black sneaker that looks like one of the shoes Miyako Hiraoka was wearing in the video footage from the mall taken on the night she went missing. I'm guessing that's what they're going on. Hopefully it will be hers, and it will provide some help in the investigation. If it is hers, I wonder if she wasn't grabbed at that spot, losing her shoe in the struggle.

The direct questioning is allowed because they are "citizen judges", as taikan pointed out. They are not jurists like in the U.S., the rules are completely different. He did, however, lose his cool, and it is hard to believe that he will look at the evidence presented and come to a fair and logical verdict. He is probably a father with a daughter, and his emotions got the better of him.

Posted in: 15-year-old girl killed after moped collides with truck See in context

numbskull, we don't know if riding double caused the accident or not. Riding double on a scooter built for a single rider does affect steering and balance, so until more information comes out about the cause, it is worth mentioning. Your car analogy is moot, as cars are usually built for more than one rider.

Posted in: 15-year-old girl killed after moped collides with truck See in context

Agree with other commentators, not enough detail. Sad about the girl, but if they were riding double on a moped made for one, it doesn't matter if the truck driver was at fault, they were wrong to do so. Stricter enforcement of ALL laws in Japan would be good, but then officers would have to put down their katsudon and go on patrol. I am joking of course, I know that there are a lot of hard-working police officers out there, but just walking around and seeing violation after violation on the roads, I get a little frustrated with the police.

Posted in: The end is near as Hollywood does the apocalypse See in context

According to the Greek translation of the word, it means "lifting of the veil" or "revelation", which I guess some think will change the world we live in. The destruction of the world won't necessarily happen, but the world as we know it may cease to exist, bringing about a world of chirping little birdies, purring widdle puddy tats, etc., as Sarge suggested, or another scenario. The skies he limit, and until the unveiling, who knows what kind of world we will live in. I know, they'll unveil that cell phones actually do cause brain cancer, thus wiping out 90% of the population. (Just joking about that 'cause I don't have one. Yep, live in Japan and don't have a mobile phone, pretty incredible...)
