what's the over-under on how many athletes and spectators need hospitalization because of the toxic air ? 1000 ? 3000 ?

While I'm no fan of Beijing air, for heaven's sake it isnt THAT bad. If you can stand L.A., you can stand Beijing. The Average AQI (Air Quality Index) for Beijing fluctuates between 75-110 during the year. The AQI for L.A. today is 90.

Posted in: Bush says not attending Olympic opening ceremony would be 'affront' to Chinese people See in context

China isn't Nazi Germany and this comparison is becoming tiresome. Fact is, the Chinese people themselves want this Olympics and are proud of it. Deny them, and you aren't helping them. Is it too hard for some of you to ee that if the Chinese people see the west turning their backs on them during their Olympics, it will only foment anti-western sentiment, and therefore make any message and attempt to "reform them" all the harder? This idea that Chinese people are in the mud waiting for the white man to lift them out of their oppression reeks of idealism and a disconnection from reality.

No, no Sarge. We simply don't have their standards. Of course, they're also so shallow, they're standing on shore.

Not Japanese soy sauce. Hee hee!

I dunno, it was typically Japanese brand. Besides, soy sauce is soy sauce more or less, no matter what it comes from. I've had it everywhere from China to Japan to Singapore and Malaysia. I've never noticed much of a difference, but maybe i just have underdeveloped taste buds =(

Why would I want to go to a communist country? Years of cold war taught me they are the enemy.

Thank you Mr. McCarthy

Although there are different cultural backgrounds between us, Japanese just ignore them. Homeless people don’t even beg.”

Though that didn't stop a guy from begging me for 500yen at Shibuya station :P

A little too eager to sell off some of our best tech, dont you think, Ossan? =P It took us long enough to sell our F-16s. I seriously doubt they'll be selling F-22s in the foreseeable future.

I know for a fact the US does the same thing. This isn't even really news. Truth be told, we get more attacks per day from N. Korea than anywhere else.

Oh, so you're one of those types who believe progress comes from the snap of your fingers eh? China today is far cry from the Mao era, and has seen much improvement since the Deng era.

, it is the rest of the world that is trying to open China

Maybe that's your problem. Maybe Chinese don't want your fingers in their pie, and resent it so. I think Western involvement has done more to hinder China's opening more than help it.

"

So this guy was traveling for free on this "buddy voucher"? I hope the judge throws out his case."

Uhm, no? Free or not, its no excuse to send a passenger to sit on a toilet for a portion of the flight. Thats ridiculous.

True. But if I admited that I would have to face the reality that I am addressing a person who knowingly and willingly made an educated and informed decision to support a Nationalist Socialist Dictatorship. And I would succumb to name-calling.

Yes, well, I know the type. They're all over the place, but it mostly has to due with the lack of separation between government and nation. I don't often argue with pure nationalists. You won't get anywhere. It's why I thank God that my Chinese girlfriend makes her own informed opinions. She's had some of her friends tell her she doesn't love her country and she's a "foolish girl" for simply no other reason than telling her friends that she believed killing the Tibetan protesters was wrong. I told her she was more of a patriot. Go figure.

pigfarmerinzhingguo I believe you meant pigfarmerinzhongguo :D

I generally agree with your post, but dont you find it somewhat ironic that you're claiming he doesn't get different perspectives despite the fact you're replying to him on a website that is giving different perspectives?

China seems to be turning these Olympics into the Olympics of hate and nationalism.

To be fair, the hate seems to be coming from the west, and the nationalism is coming as a direct result.

If China's such a great place as these students seem to claim, why are they studying in Australia?

That makes no sense. I think the US is great. Guess that means I should never study abroad.
