Posted in: Disinformation is rampant on social media – a social psychologist explains the tactics used against you See in context

Mass media sites can be as bad or even worse, just try complaining about dangerous disinformation in the comments and the only result you are going to get is your complaint deleted.

At this point I just complain directly with the sponsors, when I fill feedback on things paying for ads or full promotional articles I just put a couple of examples of pages plagued with dangerous antivaxxer disinformation comments and ask if they know their products are being promoted in places with this kind of bad reputation.

Now people will have to be more careful with these accusations, for a long time a lot of people got away slandering others as long as the victim was not too important, not anymore.

And sites can also be made responsible for letting people break the law this way, some people have got a nice sum of money by proving site administrators did not enforce anti-slander or anti-harassment rules, good for them.

Even internet sites like this have plenty of users that spread lies, paranoia, bigotry and hate speech in the comments (even if clearly against the rules), if it has been impossible to control the problem here it makes no sense to expect it to be solved for much bigger platforms.

Posted in: Social media algorithms warp how people learn from each other, research shows See in context

On social media platforms, algorithms are mainly designed to amplify information that sustains engagement, meaning they keep people clicking on content and coming back to the platforms.

So, like here then, where users are free to make outrageous claims, hate speech, attack, harass and dox others without consequence in the comment section since this brings traffic to the site. A few years back breaking the rules this way meant at least the accounts would be banned, after it was just a suspension, later the post just removed but the posters free to make them again a few minutes later, now they are left undisturbed. Slowly but surely collecting toxic users because this promotes engagement, even if it is the worst kind.

Posted in: Relentless, remorseless internet bashing rife in Japan, says magazine See in context

Hana Kimura death was a tragedy that should have been prevented, but her family and the public reacted very strongly and some small change happened because of it, now at least people can be punished for their cruelty in social media and that can make some stop their attacks.

The new laws also had some extra benefits since now it is easier for victims to sue internet services when they do not apply their own rules and let other users systematically harass them, and the best part is that this not only applies to social media. Sites that end up collecting toxic users like the comment section of this site sooner or later will have to face the consequences of this. Once personal attacks, threats, insults and harassment become as common as it is here it is only a matter of time until someone gets a nice sum by complaining about it with a lawyer, since nobody gets banned here and harassing posts are all in the profile of the abusers this is going to be quite easy to prove.

I find ironic that the poll is up here, a site where users routinely insult, attack and harass others in the comment section without facing any consequence.

Announced disaster. Long before ChatGPT was developed people wrote a lot about how dangerous it would be for machines being able to simulate human actions, the people making the algorithms simply didn't care about those dangers and focused only on how to make them profitable.

Japanese are terribly naive compared with Australians, I can't imagine how many victims would be there if the language barrier was as low as with English.

How can you “discover” something that’s been around and known and given a name for a long time?

The variety was known, but the species not. It is common to find new species of bugs that are very similar to other species until examined closely.

In fact, everywhere is being reported that the sanctions already allow for humanitarian help to reach Syria without problems.

Posted in: Man referred to prosecutors for defaming mother of late 'Terrace House' star See in context

Nice winds of change on the horrible situation on social media where people felt they had the right to harass and attack others with impunity. Double gain when this also is making very easy for victims to get a nice economic compensation from services when they let their users do this without control. A few lucky people that notice this and get a nice reward and finally companies will make their part in enforcing their own rules.

Looking at how sites refuse to control their users it may not be difficult to think people will make anonymous accounts to attack other accounts they can then use to demand this compensation, services are left wide open to this kind of abuse.

Posted in: Mother of late 'Terrace House' star sues TV broadcaster See in context

At some point companies have to be made responsible of the negativity they promote for profit. It will be interesting to see what happens with this lawsuit.

Thanks to changes in the laws it is now also easier for people to get compensation for services promoting toxic behavior in their users. When a site or service based in Japan ends up collecting trolls trying to harass other users it will now have to consider that any barely competent lawyer can use this to get some compensation for the people being attacked.
