Posted in: Here’s why Japanese supermarkets play 'cheap' background music all day, according to Twitter See in context

@ Bill Lewis

I don't mind the music so much. It's every employee that sees me screaming "IRASSHAIMASE" that makes me cringe. I often reply with, "Irasshaimashita." I mean, really, I'm there. They don't have to tell me where I am.

Ha! It must be another one of those tricks to increase cutting turn over rates. Sure helps to get me out of the store quickly.

Survey finds only 23% of vehicles stop for pedestrians at crosswalks

and a physical reality check will reveal that the numbers are much lower.

But for myself, they seem to stop about 99% of the time, and that’s Only because I put myself almost a third of the way into the road.

They don’t have time to stop, I don’t have time to wait. Something’s gotta give.

Posted in: A Japanese government panel has proposed amending the juvenile law to put 18- and 19-year-old criminal suspects on trial as adults. Do you agree with this? See in context

Making comparisons such as the legal drinking age or voting age leads nowhere. It’s not only about knowing right from wrong, it’s about impulse control too.. something a 19 year is much less capable of than a 35 year old.

Posted in: Best places to buy plant-based, organic and healthy food in Japan See in context

Give up, it’s nearly impossible if you’re looking for healthy meals. If you have the money to spend at Bio C’Bon, lucky you, other than that, Kaldi’s, “natural” Lawson, etc, just won’t cut it. Healthy food is scarce in Japan. The standard is “there are vegetables in it, so it’s healthy”.

If you’re looking for food convenience, though, it’s your paradise!

The device, however, requires customers to punch in codes for security reasons when paying by credit card.

And this rendering the entire system useless. This is a waste of money....

Posted in: JAL ditches 'ladies and gentlemen' for gender-neutral greetings See in context

I’m all for forward-thinking, gender neutral, LGBT, etc,

but everything doesn’t have to become a movement or a protest.

As a tomboy I didn’t like being referred to as a “lady”, or “miss » or worse yet, “ma’am“, but I just accept that that’s the way the world works and that’s the way other people view me.

Let the world fight for equal rights, but end it there. No need to get finicky.

Its getting to the point where I’m uncomfortable speaking. I don’t know what to call black people, disabled people, gay people......

All the terms eventually get abused and become derogatory. Living abroad, I am losing track!
