Posted in: Facebook makes sharing more selective See in context

Facebook settings are very convoluted, and confusiong, and buried quite deeply. Adding this kind of selectivity in an easy-to-access location is good.

I started using G+ and to be honest, prefer it to facebook now as it seems to be easier to link video, photos, etc. to the posts. The other good thing about G+ is that you aren't limited to that stupid 500 character limit post (unless you want to go in and write a "note", which most people never do).

Private servers are even LESS secure because they have much less security systems running on their servers. I would trust cloud servers over "offline" servers any day.

OMG, when I read the title I thought it was "the parents of five murdered girls", or one family's girls all murdered! This is just as terrible, but thank god it wasn't what I surmised.

They are not just cute, they are beautiful. Tsuchiya-san is really tall. Yes, she IS wearing heels, but they all are. However she is the tallest of all. I wonder how tall she is? I'm sure some commenter will hit google, and then come back with her height for me, so I'm not going to go and check it myself. I'm just wondering. I'm 6'5" so I LOVE to see really really tall women.

Good. I think we need some rules and regulations for social media. It is, after all, now, no different than other types of media, and it is being used by companies, and marketers alike around the world for business purposes.

Elbuda - Japan IS learning. Many outside areas are now non-smoking. They are reducing the number of smoking cars in long-haul trains. Many restaurants are forced to completely close off the smoking areas so that non-smokers don't get the smoke. Companies that prohibit smoking in their offices are on the rise. Companies that prohibit smoking in the entire office building are rising in number.

We live in a different culture in a different part of the world; to follow other cultures patterns is not always reasonable. Countries and cultures need to evolve in their own special way.

I am thankful to see that the restaurants I go to are expanding their no-smoking sections even a little bit at a time, and that in general, the amount of smoke in the air whilst walking around Shinjuku, Shibuya, etc. has dramatically decreased.

Way to go Japan!

Posted in: France to invest 1 billion euros in nuclear energy See in context

France has forever thumbed their noses at the world when it comes to nuclear power. Why stop now? On another article I left a comment re. an e-book I downloaded for free and read that quantifies the power available from all of the other sources of alternate energy. At the current time (as Sarkozy admits), there are no viable alternatives to oil and nuclear power. That will eventually change, and it will likely be pushed forward by the Fukushima Disaster, but TODAY we need nuclear and oil, as much as we may dislike these sources.

Posted in: Quake expert urges Japan to overhaul nuclear power policy See in context

There is a fantastic book that is available for free on the internet in PDF format that anyone can download. The author takes a detailed look at all of the potential "alternate energy" sources, and converts everything into comparable numbers that are easy to understand. The book is called "Sustainable Energy - without the hot air" by David JC MacKay. The latest edition is Version 3.5.2 November 3, 2008. It is exceptionally written and really gives all of us laypeople an excellent eye-opening understanding of the amount of space we would need to replace current energy systems with alternate sources. A very famous person in the world (a name that everyone knows) recommended this book, so I took a chance. It is big, and has a lot of calculations in it, but it opened my eyes in ways that regular sources on the net never could. I highly recommend it. - Cam

If you compare the number of Mercedes Benz on the streets of Asia compared to EU or NA, it is painfully obvious that there are a lot of rich Asians who have a lot of money. Of course the population concentration is much higher over here as well, so that alone would mean there are more rich people here than there.

Any company, or any individual for that matter, who doesn't review their policies on handling an issue that failed, is very very foolish. For example, if a company has a failed JV doesn't consider deeply how to improve itself and make changes for the next time around, they will repeat the same mistakes. Marriage is exactly the same; if two people fail at their marriage, and don't make an effort to improve, they will fail again the next time around. This is what we call "kaizen" in Japan. After all, you don't learn from your successes; you learn from your mistakes.

China has an entirely different set of rules that they operate by. It is not surprising at all that this has occurred. I met a Korean business owner in China who lost his first company to the Chinese government because they neglected to tell him that HE had to pay for roads, infrastructure and power lines out to his factory that they convinced him would be a great benefit to build in their country. Just imagine what would happen if you told the government you were ready for them to run the power out to your new huge company, only to find them say to you, "oh, you have to pay for that."

Posted in: Sony Ericsson eyes Android market with new phones See in context

The Android market in Japan is heating up, that's for sure.

Here is a good example.

It took au FOREVER to come out with any Androids worth merit. I have no idea why they were so late to do so (Maybe Inamori Chairman was too busy saving JAL?) Anyway, they have a bunch now to compete in the market. My plan is to switch to the HTC EVO model. On Sunday I was in Shibuya and one au shop is offering an EVO with a new contract, giving away a FREE Samsung Tab. The tab looks like an ugly, retro version of the Galaxy. The guts are the Galaxy, but apparently the battery life is only TWO HOURS on a full (6hr) charge. I wouldn't even be able to use it as an e-Reader for one round trip commute to and from work! So I gave up with the exciting thought of switching phones for now. But with a two hour battery life, that means they can only be using old battery technology to keep the price low enough to give them away for free (when you compare with the iPad2 that has a 10-12hr battery life, and can be fully charged in 3hrs).

These tabs actually debuted on March 11th, but apparently they never really got anywhere (perhaps the focus on the "triple whammy" had something to do with it). So now it seems they probably want to get rid of them as a bunch of new tabs are coming on the market as well.

But as you can see by the example above, the cell phone carriers really want to sell their smart phones and get new subscribers (above example was only for new subscriptions, not people who wanted to change their phones).

So, it will be interesting to see what Sony Ericsson comes up with, as well as Docomo, HTC, Samsung, and all the other non-iOS players. Things are getting hot this summer, and it's not just the mercury.

Laguna - Does your model have a female screw on the bottom to attach a tripod? My model came before this one came out, so it doesn't have and that makes it kind of an inconvenience when you make your own videos for YouTube (which I have been doing with it for five years). But the Sanyo cameras (now Panasonic) are excellent! I love mine.

I got my hair cut. And as soon as I get home, I get out of my "cool biz" boilersuit, and into my birthday suit. I have a Vornado which brings my bedroom down to about 30C at night, and sunblocking screens over my balcony window to keep the morning 3am sun from turning my apartment into a sauna. As it is, I usually end up living in a 35C environment with a towel around my neck for a few months...
