They should have written the banner in Kanji and Hiragana only, to show they are not just copying some idea from abroad, and mean business on a local level.

Posted in: Would you support a complete ban on smoking in public places in Japan? See in context

Patricia Yarrow, you are totally correct. Smokers object to this because the voice of addiction is controlling their minds.

Stop smoking outside every combini. That is FAR more damaging than seeing a half naked woman.

Posted in: Why Facebook keeps pushing you to go 'live' with video See in context

I think it is a good thing. There are some really decent people doing Live streams, and allowing people to ask them questions in real time. Technologists, artists, sports people, investors, traders, etc., all do Live stuff. It is the future, and extremely useful.

Haha, Abe is terrified. And so he should be.

Japan is in serious trouble internally, and now America has a leader who is taking a hard line with them too. It is beautiful to watch. The petulant child is getting put in its' place.

And think about this for a second...

Apple, the American giant, has enough cash (not overall value... just CASH!) to buy Toyota and Mitsubishi UFJ outright.

Posted in: Helicopter money talk takes flight as BOJ runs out of runway See in context

Whatever name they want to call it; Helicopter money, Fiscal Stimulus, etc., it is all addressing the same issue, which can't be fixed with tricks and tactics. The issue is far deeper; it is structural and cultural, and the Japanese are far too stubborn to admit this about themselves, and are certainly not going to fix the problems, so the issue will remain forever. They are their own worst enemy.

Yeah, this is very true, innervoice. People are finally realising that average browser based activities (which are 99.9% of all computer users) don't need a mega-bucks ultra rendering workstation, and are buying task-appropriate devices.

Desktop PCs are indeed the realm of the enthusiast / professional / power user now (which I am a definite member of, and love)

Posted in: Studies show Japanese people drinking less than ever See in context

This is great news. As another person pointed out, the idea of the alcohol guzzling, cigarette smoking person is one of the past.

I look forward to the day when alcohol and cigarettes are gone for good. They serve no purpose, other than to make money for the drug dealers selling them.

I sense that consumption is on the decline the world over. The internet has provided a social and knowledge resource and shows people that easily accessible alternative non-alcohol soaked lifestyles are out there for everyone, and anyone can jump into a new way of living and be put in contact with new friends at the click of a button.

Instagram, Facebook, etc., have changed everything.

Posted in: Nintendo says CEO Satoru Iwata has died of cancer at 55 See in context

Shame.

According to Cancer.org, the Japanese lifestyle of heavy drinking, the presence of Liver Fluke injections from raw fish, and the stigma of testing for STDs (in this case Hepatitis B/C) makes Bile Duct Cancer highly probable. At 55 years of age, Iwata would have been prime for this kind of thing.

Take care out there, everyone.

Posted in: Gackt lashes out at Cool Japan: 'Almost no results of Japanese culture exported overseas' See in context

Cultural exports become exports organically, through their own merit. The fact that nothing Japanese exists out side of Japan in mainstream circles, simply shows that nothing of mainstream merit is made in Japan.

Posted in: Gay activists in Asia upbeat about impact of U.S. court ruling See in context

Surprise surprise, Asia is stuck in the past and refuses to modernise, continuing with archiac discrimination, dressed up as 'culture'.

“It’s one step forward for the United States that leaves Hong Kong one further step behind,” said lawyer Michael Vidler.

This applies to the whole of Asia, not just Hong Kong.

Posted in: Are futons awesome or simply awful? See in context

If futons were so good, why don't all the top end hotels in Tokyo have them? Oh yeah, that's right, because they are junk. They only exist because they are cheap and 'cultural'.

A good quality western bed is absolutely leagues ahead of a futon, which is basically a glorified dogs basket. Japanophiles will downvote this. People who understand quality will not.

Good. Everything on that list, apart from romantic love, and sex, is outdated.

Posted in: Prince William strikes a friendly contrast to crown prince See in context

I think this pretty much sums up the difference between the UK and Japan as a whole, really. I am from London, and now live in Japan so have direct experience of both cultures. The UK is more of a laugh, by a very VERY long way. Japan has its advantages, but for general hilarity, chaos and overall being human and, well, normal, the UK is the winner.

Can you imagine there ever being a video of the Japanese prince, standing there taking the p*ss out of his brother like this; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vt2Luu08f70

No chance. It is all stifled, Gormanghast levels of pomp and unfunny ceremony here in Japan.

Good lad William, and good lad Harry, I say. Hazzah!!
