Why did he want to kill his father? His father had nothing to do with his problems. What a horrible person!

Wow! I noticed Japanese like leaving the car running, especially at supermarkets. Probably do that more often than other countries. I guess they wanted to keep the aircon on for the child. Still not good leaving the child all alone in the car.

Posted in: 'Job-leaving agents' in Japan help people escape awkwardness of quitting See in context

I've never understood this mindset in Japan. Where I'm from sometimes quitting means looking for a better opportunity. I remember one girl I worked with saying when she was quitting " I'm going over to greener pastures!". Some people are really good at their jobs, deserve a promotion, yet their employer doesn't recogize their talent. Sensible thing to do is quit and find a better opportunity, an employer who will recognize their ability and pay them more! Makes sense to me!

I was working in that area in 2010. Gee 18 years?? That's unbelievable. The punishment doesn't fit the crime! Japanese law needs to be changed!

Why does it appear to be so many unemployed men in their 30s yet there is a shortage of workers? That man should get a job and earn. Internet banking is fine. The problem is if you're carefree with security which appears to be the case for the victim.

Posted in: My Number ID system faces further setback with erroneous deliveries See in context

They stopped issuing the Notification Cards in May 2020.

That is what I have. It has a number and my address. When I received it back in 2017 I think it was there was a choice of just having that or applying for the card which has your photo in it. So far I've never been forced to apply for it. I've used the notification card with bank accounts and a recently opened account with a financial service company with no problem. They are just interested in the number on my card.

RIP to the deceased. There are a lot of narrow roads in Japan and large vehicles drive on them. Drivers have to be very alert. Just a small lapse in concentration can be disastrous.

Posted in: Kishida unveils new measures to reverse declining birthrate amid election rumors See in context

They really need to improve the pay rates to address this problem. Minimum wage is about a 1000 yen an hour and there are the very expensive health and pension schemes you're obligated to enrol in to boot. It doesn't leave you much left over let alone having the money to raise a family. Some of the low income earners can't afford to pay into them.

Posted in: Gov't approves hike in household electricity rates See in context

Ok so electric prices up,

Food prices up, terrible exchange rate.

But we should all to our best and take a foreign holiday ( as reported by Japan today)

But no rise in wages

Hmmm

Something doesn't add up.

The minimum wage is still around 1000 yen. It's been like that for a number of years. Then you have to pay into expensive health and pension schemes. You're right. Something doesn't add up.

Sung-Yoon Lee, an East Asia expert at Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, said that meeting sends a message to China, Russia and North Korea of “solidarity among the democracies in the region and their resolve to stand up to the increasingly threatening autocracies.

Absolutely. I think those protesters are very naive. They seem to not know history. There was a person called Hitler who caused havoc due to a policy of appeasement.

Posted in: Sauerkraut or sardines? Hiroshima's 'okonomiyaki' goes global for G7 summit See in context

Why do they have to change it? Keep it as it is. When you visit a foreign country you should be trying the food as it is served to the locals. You may not like it but that is party of experiencing a different cuisine different from yours. This is like Chinese diplomats visiting a Western country and you add soy sauce to Western foods to cater for their taste.

Posted in: Japanese people urged to travel abroad to help airlines, tourism industry See in context

I read somewhere only 24 percent of Japanese have passports and out of that 24 percent only 16 percent travel abroad. There are various reasons why many Japanese don't travel abroad and one of them is it is very expensive!

Shocking but it is reality. The pension system in place is looking very very shaky! Good luck if you're hoping for a pension payout in 30 years. There are a few solutions around this. Paying people more and increasing the pension premiums. Let immigrants in. However I suspect this won't be happening any time soon.

I watched this show in the late 80s to mid 90s. It was a great show! Watching it now whilst watchable it is far far away from the level of entertainment it had back then. A lot of things are not as good nowadays compared to 30 years ago. Music in particular.

Posted in: Kyoto to introduce Japan's 1st empty homes tax See in context

It seems the Japanese goverment is really desperate for revenue. They keep taxing and taxing. If they keep taxing like this in the future the country's economy is much worse than I thought.

Posted in: If you currently live in Japan, do you think you will, or would like to spend the rest of your life here? See in context

No. It comes down to which country is best for you in your retirement years. If you are set on retiring in Japan make sure you have a retirement plan. There’s a lot of people just floating around in life with no savings and investments going on and Japan is not the place to be if you’re just scraping by when your old and gray!

Posted in: Message to foreigners at Japanese convenience store sparks controversy online See in context

"do you have a point card?/do you need a plastic bag?"

The plastic bag part I can understand but I always wonder why they keep asking me if I have a point card all the time. They've seen my face all the time at the regular supermarket I go to and I've told them milions of time that I don't have one. Sales pitch I guess. Reading Japanese is a much harder task for foreigners than speaking Japanese so I don't get why Japanese insist on writing in Japanese to convey a messsage to foreigners. It's like writing a message in Arabic to Japanese tourists in Dubai. Overall I've found customer service at convenience stores pretty good. One even let me use their phone to contact someone when I was running late. I decided to buy something because they helped me out.

Pension is around ¥65000 a month.

That is correct. There are a lot of pensioners struggling to live. Even the other pension scheme pays measly. 150 000 yen a month and some struggle on it. Shocking what he did to make ends meet.

Posted in: ¥790,000 stolen from 71 students’ wallets during graduation ceremony See in context

Japanese tend to carry a lot more cash on them compared to Westerners. Not big on debit cards and credit cards. Cash is king! Things are changing and paying with apps on phones is getting popular. Shame they didn't see the potential of theft. Big events invite the opportunity for a crime to occur.

For the time being I think there is nothing bad about wearing masks. As time passes, another 2 or 3 years time people really should give them up and return to normal. I like to see people's faces.

I do feel sorry for him a bit and feel it is a bit harsh. 2 years is enough. The mistake by the public servant was monumentally embarrassing and probably should be suspended for a few months for incompetence. I worked in a office before and don't they have people double checking things. Sometimes things get checked a third time. Better to be safe than sorry. Still can't get my head around the light sentences for this crime. See below.

Posted in: Japan births hit all-time low in 2022; below 800,000 for 1st time See in context

The problem with the pension scheme Japan has in place is for it to work effectively it needs a large working population. This is not happening in Japan. The reverse is happening. More migrants need to come in . An increasing elderly population means health care costs will go up considerably in the future.
