Posted in: Scientists say human-caused global warming is exacerbating natural disasters such as fires and floods around the world, making them both more likely and more deadly. Do you agree? See in context

@ClippetyClop

Even if you don't agree with climate change, the solutions are something that we should be doing anyway regardless.

The solutions below are from Greenpeace, considered by some to be 'radical lefties', and yet they are pretty common sense. They will lead to a cleaner, more sustainable planet for what will soon be 10 billion people. I'd challenge anyone to diagree with them.

Keep fossil fuels in the ground - No problems with that, as long as there are viable alternatives

Invest in renewable energy - As long as it's viable

Switch to sustainable transport - That is being done - everything is going electric

Help us keep our homes cosy - This needs support from governments, as the changes needed are very expensive and a lot of people can't afford it

Improve farming and encourage vegan diets - This one I have difficulties with - humans are omnivores, not plant eaters - you would need to supplement a vegan diet with the calcium and vitamins the body needs. Also everyone being vegan is the same as having farm animals farting all over the place

Restore nature to absorb more carbon - Re-forestation should be the biggest priority

Protect forests like the Amazon - That will be difficult in what is becoming a war zone

Protect the oceans - Agree 100%... but how?

Reduce how much people consume - Not everyone is up for a HUGE lifestyle upheaval

Reduce plastic - Replace it with what? Card and paper? That means cutting forests

All very laudable ideas, but you will need to take the entire population with you... and that's neve going to happen. Not everyone is an angry millennial or teenager.

@Eastmann

its capitalism and greed,hunt for profit at any cost.not "humans".

So you're saying that it would never have happened under a communist dictator?

What amazes me is that there were live rounds anywhere near the set - I mean why were they there? It's a film set, not a shooting range.

This is scare mongering. Yes June was hot (we didn't reel from it, we loved it) but July has been very wet... checks and balances

I've been to the museum several times and it's a wonderful place to spend a couple of hours... such a shame they've had to resort to crowdfunding. I'm surprised that they haven't applied to the lotteries to help... I'm even more surprised that the JGov has let it adrift... surely national treasures are the responsibility of the culture secretary (assuming they have one)?

To be fair neither is the Med or the Baltic.

On the flip side, NATO membership could end up like the Eurovision Song Contest - Australia and Israel (and for a while Russia) aren't exactly in Europe lol.

What utter bollox. They invaded, took strategic territory illegally and stayed. How would YOU like it if your neighbour broke into your garden and said it was their garden?

Posted in: Britain's public health service at 75: On life support? See in context

The current crisis was all basically Cameron's fault - he backed down and gave the xenophobes the vote for Brexit to happen... and a slim majority won that vote. Foreign workers booted out, families torn apart, alliances shredded, public services gutted... and the NHS left searching for more staff to bring the queues down. Brexit was the worst thing to happen to this country, but the xenophobes and racists don't care... they want us back in the 1950s.

I don't doubt the figures, but when I do the weekly shopping the supermarket is busy and people in the queues still have trolleys full of brand name items, fresh fruit n veg, drinkies and other items. I don't see many people picking up the cheap own brand items. That's an ASDA store in Glasgow, not some posh Waitrose store in Surrey.

I think in deprived areas or areas where unemployment is high, yes I can see those figures, maybe even higher.

@Tim Sullivan

It's not easy to find healthy food in the UK.

Yes it is... my local ASDA is full of good healthy food - fresh fruit and veg, all of the free-from items, vegan for those that want it, non dairy... masses of it.

Does anyone really need to have chocolate with their Weetabix? The people who dream up these products are evil.

Yeah... that's just weird, but I suspect you get versions of that all over the world.

Kyoto really doesn't like tourists, it appears... they preserve the place like some kind of living museum, but they want to discourage the great unwashed from actually visiting and enjoying their time there.

Let's rrewrite history for those who can't be arsed to learn about it... so many films and TV series do this. Is it any wonder that the millennials regurgitate the 'history' they see on the screen?

Not really a fan of Mr Law - although I did like "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow"... but then I'm a pulp fan - but having some weird concoction made up to repel fellow cast members is maybe taking method acting a bit far?

As it’s, the Chinese have already picked what they deem good from the “ democracies”, and we can’t deny it’s served them well...and surprise! No regime change is likely for a long time ! The Tibet issue - out ! The Uighurs - out!

Let’s learn to stay out of other peoples business.

Remember that when Taiwanese streets are bombed out and the people living in shelters. China cannot be allowed to seize Taiwan in the same way Russia is trying with Ukraine.
