Norway and Iceland don't have any international relations problems and they've been openly commercially hunting since 1986 by rejecting the Moratorium. No one is asking them if hey really need to eat whales are they?

They also aren't chugging half-way around the world to hunt whales in contested waters. If Japan did the right thing and hunted within their EEZ or even in the same hemisphere things would be a lot different...

the governments of St Kitts and Nevis, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati, Grenada, Republic of Guinea and Ivory Coast negotiated selling their votes in return for aid.

These countries also get their ministers briefly on the phone?

I understand your point about the language thing as English isn't even my first language... Is it yours? Even though English isn't my first language I know that I should say what I mean... I also know that earlier you were saying the opposite of what you are saying now. There is no possible way that you can think "its no big deal" and "someone should be punished"... that just doesn't make sense! (even to a 2 year old ;) )

When you come on here with excuses like "everybody does it, it's no big deal, this isn't news, the small nations were selling their vote etc etc etc" how would anyone ever guess that what you were really saying is "this kind of behaviour is unacceptable and those responsible should be punished"... Jez, even 4 year olds know that they should say what they mean...

Never stated otherwise?????? You said repeatedly that you thought this was no big deal... that everybody does it... and now you want to claim that you think this IS a big deal and that j-officials should get in trouble?

Zenny you said:

Don't holds back, tell us how you truly feel about the whalers

Maybe you don't realize that people who are upset about this type of corruption may not even have an opinion about whalers or even whaling... I really think that heads should roll for this type of behaviour but I won't hold my breath.

I love how Zenny here is trying to turn this discussion into a pro - anti whaling debate. I fully support Japan's right to hunt whales... and yet news like this makes me sick.

So, what makes you more upset about this story... the fact that Japanese officials are bribing foreign officials with cash and prostitutes or the fact this story was even reported? By reading through your posts it seems pretty clear that you don't care about the bribery but are quite upset that this story has been published. Your position makes no sense... if Japan wasn't engaging in nefarious deals we would never have to read this 'propaganda' as you like to call it.

The government of Japan used my tax money to buy prostitutes for these overseas ministers? And all of this for whales? WTF! Just further confirms my view that these fisheries ministers and the ICR are just a group of common criminals. They care nothing for the citizens of this country... just their own bottom line.

Exactly what efforts would you have commanded if BP was under your enlightened leadership? Thanks for sharing.

For starters, if there was even an outside chance that something like this could have happened there should have been systems in place to minimize the damage. If there were no systems to prevent this kind of accident then they should have never gone ahead with the drilling in the first place. Saying, "Whoops we never could have imagined this" is an outright lie. In fact, at this point calling it an accident is really being euphemistic, it's negligence pure and simple.

Make love not war! Kawata should have just gone after his ex-wife's sister...

I kind of understand getting super pissed about this... instead of stabbing my brother I probably would have told him that the ex was riddled with STDs... if that didn't work I would have knocked his block off! Really though, violence isn't the best kind of revenge now, is it?

Sorry, but Mr. Harper's responsibility is not to the G8 but to the voters of Canada. Whether he disagrees with the G8 is beside the point. He is supposed to represent the population. Instead of openly and honestly representing the Canadian voters he hides his agenda. If he believed what he was doing was right he won't hide his agenda. No backbone. None at all.

mikehuntez, you obviously know nothing about Harper if you think he has a backbone. In fact, he completely hid his agenda until they released their policy statement at the summit. Sounds like someone who really stands up for their convictions... Actually, nah, sounds like someone who knows they don't have the support of the country but tries to ram their ideology down other people's throats. He's a coward who avoids debate by hiding his positions until he can force them on others through procedure (ie, not having enough time to address issues in Parliament)... repeatedly.

Prime Minster Steven Harper says his government will focus on less contentious issues dealing with health care at the G-8 summit in Huntsville, Ontario, in late June.

The only reason he is afraid to reopen the abortion debate and would rather focus on less contentious issues is that he'd have to acknowledge that he doesn't have support for these kinds of measures.

So my supporting the guy in his quest to get his kids back is wrong how?

Because he broke the law in Japan. Are you saying that two wrongs make a right?

Ossan and Molenir. For two posters who constantly focus on the black and white issues of laws to defend your positions I find it kind of strange that you would admire someone who broke the laws of this country.

A ridiculous shriek. You do realize that if you migrated into the U.S., legally you are required to carry documention stating so, i.e., green card, passport w/visa, at all times.

And you do realize that plenty of people born in the US look just like our southern neighbors. They're going to have to start carrying around papers to prove that they aren't immigrants. Sounds like a wonderful way to be made to feel at home.

Every cop in the world knows that 'probable cause' is their get out of jail free card. My brother is in law enforcement and has often joked with me about the types of excuses they are able to use as probable cause.

Police have never been allowed to pull you over because of your nationality... but those of us living in the real world know that this happens every day.

Supporters have dismissed concerns of racial profiling, saying the law prohibits the use of race or nationality as the sole basis for an immigration check. Brewer has ordered state officials to develop a training course for officers to learn what constitutes reasonable suspicion someone is in the U.S. illegally.

Right. I'd love to see some statistics of the nationalities that these police question during routine checks. I'd also love love love to hear what kind of things these police will be trained to look for. Shifty eyes? Smelling like garlic?

I can actually understand the concern over human rights in this case. As a visible minority living in Japan I've had to deal with a few overzealous police over the years. If a similar law were passed in my prefecture I think what was a minor annoyance would become a daily problem of harrassment (since the police are required to ask!). I would hate to have the feeling that everytime I see the police I would be forced to present some documents. There is no way this is going to have anything but a negative effect on all the legal immigrants and CITIZENS of Arizona who happen to be visible minorities.

Furthermore, these comments:

If Obama doesn't realize pretty soon... Obama and the Democrats vs the American people...

Are pretty misguided considering the article clearly states >Activists called on President Barack Obama to fight a tough new law

Why direct your comments to President Obama when he actually has nothing to do with this issue? Oh wait... I know the answer already.

Seriously, nothing to get concerned about. I go to the Atami plum garden every year... and every year these particular trees are in bloom at that time. Notice the pink colour? They are not the variety that blooms in late March.

Those trees bloom early every year... just like the ones in Kawazu (Izu). There is nothing weather related at all. Maybe doing a little research (or possibly being able to read the sign in Japanese right next to the trees) would have avoided this false report.

Numbskull, if the bike was a 50cc scooter (as it almost certainly was in light of the fact that this kid was only 17) then the brakes would not work with two passengers nor would it be able to accelerate fast enough to get out of the way of oncoming traffic. I've been riding bikes from 50cc to 1050cc for the last 20 years. Overloading a bike will result in avoidable accidents. It's sad that this type of accident keeps happening. It's not the first time a young man makes a bad decision on a bike and it won't be the last.

Posted in: Powerful typhoon lashes southwest Japan; expected to make landfall Thursday See in context

As someone who has been surfing typhoon swells in Japan since the early 90s I can honestly say that most of us respect the power of waves. Whats crazy is how many times I've seen, read and heard of people getting swept out to sea while trying to swim or play around in these kinds of conditions. My local beach has at least one fatality every year and it's almost only ever drunken men in their 30s or 40s from Tokyo (3 years ago it was a small child unfortunately)

PS, Beelzebub, how long has Kamakura been near Okayama? Get someone who can read Japanese to translate the article for you!

Bottom line is if you don't understand and respect its power, don't step foot in the ocean.
