My child from grade 2 was bullied by students, teachers and principal and in grade 4 I took the principal before the school board for a number of issues, and they did NOTHING. The following year, a Japanese boy in the same class was being bullied and his mother went to the school board and finally the principal was shuffled off to another school, no not fired, just shuffled away. Pathetic.

Norm, you are a very snarky individual. Empathy for these elderly folks is required and not your snarky attitude.

Clearly this very elderly gentleman had love for his wife, he turned himself in immediately following and what a shame he did not have the support of the local kuakusho who are required to do home visits to elderly people like this man to assist with providing information and or aide if they need it. My understanding there are so many elderly people, many without the help of extended families and are being missed and suffering in silence like they were taught to do growing up in war era Japan. Complaining or asking for help is a sign of weakness in the Japanese culture especially in this age group, and so, unfortunately it appears they reach a breaking point and the result is death.

Let me make it clear I don't condone all these killings; however, I look at the ages of these elderly individuals who should not have to be in these caregiver roles at their own advanced ages.

Dente, every country is suffering due to inflation. Next, if you are expecting for Japan to bail your foreign butt out of trouble, no. There is so many Japanese elderly who need the help first before you. I prepared for the rainy day, single foreign mom and all, and yes it sucks that prices have gone up, but it is not only Japan, and I just stay within my means. Maybe it is something you could try instead of crying.

How about raising the minimum wage, working with the elderly and the unemployed who are able and capable of work and who need the financial aid and that will provide them a standard of life that they deserve.

Japan's police can interrogate people without the presence of a lawyer this includes children, and from what I understand from my Japanese lawyer friend that the police have more power than the judges in these criminal cases.

Yes, radical changes need to be made for the safety of all.

David, it is unfortunate and or fortunate regarding the elderly the services are far greater than the outlining areas, because they don't have the same funding as the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. So, it is wise you are keeping your mother-in-law in Tokyo for that reason.

Yes, you are spot on regarding the elderly man in every aspect that his stay in prison he will be provided with a whole lot more care than he would on the outside. I agree too, he will suffer greatly of the passing of his wife, because after probably 50 plus years of marriage it could not have been a decision made lightly. Yes, she made had an injured leg, however, she must have had other ailments and where she may even have asked him to end her life.

David Fair, I am so sorry to hear of your wife's and your struggles dealing with your elderly mother-in-law. I have another friend whose mother also has dementia; however, she seems a more functional person at the moment.

Just some information, it may or may not help your mother-in-law is coconut oil. Go on You Tube and look up a doctor whose husband has dementia, and during the pandemic found that coconut oil can help aide (not a cure) with dementia.

For others, I don't condone murder, however, in certain cases such as this empathy and extreme circumstances need consideration.

All of you really need to take a step back and think about the era the man grew up in where the man went to work, and the wife took care of the home and children. In addition, the man is nearly 90 years old what health and physical conditions was he suffering, and on top of his age and his own possible health conditions he is expected to take care of his ailing wife.

The government needs to reflect on their policies regarding the aging and their needs.

Regarding this man's wife I hope she is resting in peace, and for this very, very elderly man I hope he will hold up ok behind bars.

Please do not shoot the messenger. I do not agree with the article that I cut and pasted, however, that is the reality of the elderly presently in Japan all I am doing is just relaying the facts. I find the government heartless and mean spirited with their decisions regarding the healthcare in Japan for the elderly,

Posted in: More than 95,000 Japanese aged over 100; most of them women See in context

Earlier this month, the Cabinet approved a proposal that would require people over 74 to pay 20% of health care costs out of pocket, thus doubling the portion they currently pay. The plan would apply to single person households with yearly incomes of ¥2 million or more. For a two-person household where both residents are over 74, the threshold is ¥3.2 million.

Residents enrolled in the national health insurance system currently pay 30% out of pocket, and then 10% once they reach 75. Many older people live on fixed incomes and tend to use health care services more than younger people do, so the government believes that, due to the growing elderly population, younger people — the "working generation," as the government calls them — are being unfairly stuck with the bill for their parents' and grandparents' health care.

The media has found nothing strange about the plan: What's wrong with asking older people of means to pay a larger share of their health care costs? But that justification springs from a basic understanding that the health insurance system as it stands is fair, when, in fact, it isn't.

Wallace here is an article from the Japan Times written in 2022, and so, please prepare yourself.

Posted in: Lowered adult age sees rise in young Japanese struggling with debt See in context

In my early 20's I got myself into deep credit card debt and there was no one to bail me out and it was so stressful, and I was making the bare minimum payments on them, but I was determined to get out under without declaring bankruptcy and did because of payouts I got from a car accident I was in. After that, I moved to Japan and blessedly years ago many Japanese stores took cash only and I never got back into debt.

There is one other point I want people to know and that many don't know about credit cards and that is not written in bold letters is when you take cash off your credit cards. Once you take cash off your credit cards there is an immediate daily interest fee, yes daily, once that cash enters your hands. Here is another fact, the credit cards will put the bare minimum towards the cash advance, and the remaining amount to the items you charged on your card, and I hope this warning will help you not to AVOID taking that credit card cash advance.

This story has missed some marks and or danced around some points.

First, the government has not made 65 the official retirement age, and so, what do companies do at the age of 60 people are made to retire and if they wish to keep their post they'll be rehired at a reduced wage. Insulting and demeaning is what this for those over 60 as they continue their same job for a fraction of their wage because the government refuses to raise the official retirement age.

Second, when people hit the age of 70, they hit the elderly really hard by raising their health care premiums to 40 thousand yen a month and making even harder for this age group to exist and where the elderly cut back on their electricity and other daily necessities. You don't hear about the elderly complain because the culture is keeping a stiff upper lip, and they get on with their suffering in silence. How to know this is true, more and more elderly are committing crimes, and so, they will be sent to prison so they can be taken care of, and just look at the senior stats of now of people in the Japanese prison system and most are petty crimes truly sad.

The reason the tourists came in droves is because of the weak yen and it paid for them to come. For Japanese people who struggle daily to keep afloat with rent and bills makes traveling only a dream with the weak yen and high prices.

If his mother had dementia, he is single and trying to work and care for her single handedly, impossible.

The Japanese government is doing little to nothing to aide small families in these situations. I am not condoning what happen, however, the government raises health care premiums for elderly people by almost double when they reach the age of 70 to about 40-thousand-yen, homecare assistance is getting harder to find because of the number of elderly that are in dire need.

The government needs to stop aiding other countries, financially, and start using the money taxpayers provide each year for the people of Japan.

Here are some of the reasons this lady may have done it first shay no longer had the finances or family support to keep him in the facility he was in. I have heard the public nursing homes are worse than prison true or not true I can only go based on hearsay story of a friend's relative who was in one doesn't sound attractive at all.

My heart goes out to the deceased and his elderly wife who I am sure felt in her mind was the last resort. The Japanese Government needs to do more to help the elderly and not bleed them dry as they get older such as raising their health care benefits to over 40 thousand yen a month.

My child has 3 nationalities due to parents' countries of birth and where my child was born. This is a blessing, giving my child a leg up in the world when they are out on their own. Children born in other countries do not give parents an anchor until they come of age which can be different depending on the origin of country they are born in, and Japan should do the same. Where these parents stay refugees, and that they can become permanent residents upon their daughter coming of age, she sponsors them and be held responsible for them while they remain in Japan.
