Generally the customer service in Japan is better than what I'm used to in New Zealand, but I find I miss the human element that you get when actually having a conversation with shop workers there. Admittedly it is not as common as I'd like as you do get people having an off day, but I find it can be better than what sometimes appears to be the robotic mentality towards service here in Japan.
