Just out of completeness, the graphs above don't really demonstrate anything. The confidence interval overlap in most cases, which means that there is no evidence that the difference is statistically significant (except for social cognition at 12 months). Stats 101

It’s been 80 years people, time to move on. I understand Americans are brainwashed about military stuff, but exercising critical thinking should be a must for every person on the planet, regardless of nationality.

These same experts don't have Musk's brains and skills though so I'm interested in seeing what he does

Repeating like a parrot what smart people working at Tesla say != being smart

As for the skills, being born in a rich family and becoming even richer is not proof of intelligence. Ask Kim Kardashian for confirmation.

He's truly the ultimate buffoon, and it's extremely alarming that so many people are fascinated by such a mediocre thinker. Halo effect much?

Posted in: Russia warns of World War III ahead of Western summit on arms to Ukraine See in context

World War III simply can’t happen because Europe and the US are bound together by NATO. Russia can’t take Ukraine, do they really think they can threaten an entire group of countries which are a lot wealthier and more powerful than Russia singularly, let alone combined?

The US, France and the UK have extremely advanced drones, which would take down moscow even before a formal declaration of war can be completed.

no way this can happen, even if China supported russia (which China would not since they have always been more interested in revenue than wars).

Teach the troops to wash properly and gargle and drink green tea and eat nattou

Out of all the useless habits I have had the opportunity to witness, gargling is by far the most meaningless yet disgusting one. It has been proven to bring no benefits, yet still so widespread.

Posted in: Okinawa reports 623 new coronavirus cases; 390 in Tokyo See in context

These numbers simply are the product of more testing.

More tests means smaller margin of error on the points estimate for the proportion of the population affected by covid. If you don't test, your confidence interval is gigantic and tells you nothing about the true proportion of the population affected by the disease. Having more tests and larger numbers is reassuring. This is what should have been done since the very beginning.

If both vaccinated and non-vaccinated can transmit the virus than both must follow the same rules.

Not really, try again. Look up the meaning of "conditional probability" and "prosecutor's fallacy".

As a member of the RSS, I will always speak up against this sort of nonsense. Open a book and study or just avoid spreading unneeded nonsense.

Your logical, commonsense responses are not welcome in this forum of people who would rather lock themselves in their parents' basements until its safe to come out.

I don't think anybody wants to live like a hikikomori, but I do not understand why some people want to take unnecessary risks for a freaking beer at the pub. Is having a beer worth catching covid?

Posted in: Japanese firms adopt AI dating app to help staff find love amid pandemic See in context

Oh Japan, when will you learn that a bunch of if-conditionals isn’t AI? Banded around as a buzzword way too much.

It's so boring to realize that everybody thinks they can wake up in the morning, train a logistic regression model and think they are the new Alan Turing.

Unfortunately, the misuse of the word AI (for non AI code) and of data analysis (for lame excel sheets) is too widespread already.

basically 0. Again, these numbers are rubbish.

Whatever logic and reasoning about the Japanese numbers is doomed to fail because the published information is pure garbage.

there’s not much to say: we will never know how extended the infection is and at this point one even wonders what is the point of the state of emergency really.

It used to be pretty much the same as normal except for the restaurants not serving alcohol past 8. Now that the alcohol ban has been lifted, it feels like that “state of emergency” is more like a “state of normalcy”.

Honestly, the reason why the Paralympics haven’t been cancelled is that would be political suicide for Suga. Allowing Olympics but not Paralympics would make him lose the vote of many disabled people and their relatives (or at least those who empathize with them).

The only clever act would have been cancelling the Olympics but that’s in the past now. We have to brace for a new wave of infections. Again.

I stopped using MUFJ a couple months ago due to the rising cost of the transactions with them and to the fact that their web banking is pretty bad.

I switched to Rakuten. Setting up the account was a very long process, but their internet banking and apps are 100x better than the traditional banks here. Still miles away from the online banking in the west but decent nonetheless. Not to mention that, unlike most banks, a lot of transactions are free of charge.

Basically the age bracket 45+ makes up 55% of the population. In other words, it’s statistically more likely for a 45+ to have received at least one dose of the vaccine. And probably only 65+ are fully vaccinated.

@joffy

sore throat and tiredness are enough to get tested in Gunma and Ibaraki, but not in Tokyo.

Also, what is the point in considering people in ICU not serious in Tokyo but serious in the rest of the country?

there’s a fundamental lack of critical thinking and decision making going on. That’s what the problem is right now.

Monty, your anecdotal evidence regarding the vaccines reminds me a person living in the upper east side that thinks normal folks eat caviar for breakfast and shop on fifth Avenue as a job.

Besides, the Russians have refused to publish reliable phase 3 results and therefore their vaccine has not been adopted by developed countries. Why is it so hard to understand?
