Actually, Mike Pence who was in Congress at the time, also supported the war in Iraq, so he shares in the happenings, good or bad as well.

The reasons for dropping the bomb were very complex. One of which was to show the Soviets what we had. There was at least one general in Patton who wanted to go to war with the Soviets. I'm not sure how many other minds were thinking like this at the time, but the intimidation factor was clearly one of the many reasons for dropping the bomb. I'm not justifying it, just trying to add perspective.

Posted in: Which martial arts would you recommend to someone wanting to learn a means of self-defense? See in context

I myself am pretty partial to traditional Japanese martial arts as I love the culture and history. I would recommend Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu. I love it, but as with anything else, it's not for everyone. Eventually I would like to get formal training in Kenjutsu and Iaijutsu. If anyone has ever heard of Shinkendo, that is a good way to go. It is a gendai budo comprised of a few Koryu Bujutsu sword styles. There is a student of the founder of Shinkendo teaching in Tokyo. She stayed with him for a few months learning the style. The Honbu dojo is in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, California.

@CrazyJoe: I totally agree with you, with the exception being them moving it to Japan for the sake of the crew finally returning to their home country.

@Bertie Wooster- "Look at the mess US troops have created in the Middle East"

That mess in the Middle East was already there, centuries before the U.S. was even a country. Now, if you want to say "look at the mess that the U.S. trooos have exacerbated, then that's another story. While it now seems like Sadaam Hussein was a better ootion to ISIS, how do you think you would've liked to live under his or Assad's rule? It's pretty easy for us to be arn chair generals from the comfort of out homes, thousands of miles away from the actio all safe and sound.

@sfjp33:

The U.S prison system is full of people who can be put to work to replace them, that's who. Call it "Hard Labor".

Posted in: Obama spurns Republicans with immigration orders See in context

People constantly argue that the system is broken, yet they never really point out EXACTLY what is broken. Is it broken because it breaks up families? Well, it doesn't really break up families. The person who actually broke the law did when he/she assumed the risk of breaking the law in the first place. I'm no legal scholar, but I'm quite certain that there isn't a law stating that the offenders being returned to their home countries can't take their families home with them. If the argument is "it's cruel to send the kids back to where their parents are from, because the United States is the only home they've ever known", then again that fault lies with the offenders and not the law. When their parents broke our immigration laws to by whatever means they did to do it, wasn't their home country the only home they ever knew? Who better to help their kids/families assimilate after being deported back to their country of origin than them? Of course a system is going to appear broken when you only want to enforce the laws "ala carte". Try doing more to severely punish the employers enticing the "cheap labor" to break the laws and see how much those opportunities dry up. Try enforcing every law in the books instead of playing politics with the system and people's lives.

"But VIETNAM in no push over, just ask any US Marines that fought there and the USA was only the latest foreign invader"

Elbuda Mexicano:

Not to rewrite history or anything, but they U.S. never invaded Vietnam. What started out as sending military advisors to their South Vietnamese allies, turned into a gradual build up of forces there. China was actually the last foreign invader into Vietnam when they sent 80,000 PLA troops across their border with Vietnam in the late '70s.

@gokai_wo_manaku:

China does have the largest military in terms of manpower and equipment. The U.S. is the second or third largest. The fact is that the U.S. spends more on defense than the next 12-15 countries combined. So China does have the largest military. The U.S. b as the largest military budget.

One of the main purposes of using drones for the American military is to have 0 American military deaths and 0 American military casualties. The Filipino army had 1 death and 12 casualties. Exactly what is the American military to learn from them?

Posted in: Obama nominates Caroline Kennedy as ambassador to Japan See in context

"I read the article thank you, and btw, this isn't what Japan was thinking about when they talked about name recognition. A rookie female, no more no less, the Japanese will treat her will all due respect to her face, and then be condescending as hell behind her back.

It's obvious from this choice that Obama does not find Japan to be a high priority. Even at a time when the US is talking about (and doing it) shifting it's forces towards a more Pacific footing, the territorial disputes that Japan has with China and Korea, with Japan expecting the US to back them up. But with an ambassador that has no experience and is just a "name"?

Not a smart move in my opinion."

@Yubaru:

Who would you have liked for him to choose? Anyone in particular?

Posted in: Obama nominates Caroline Kennedy as ambassador to Japan See in context

"I question Obama's mindset here. Ok great a female ambassador for a male dominated society, but one with no foreign relations experience? Particularly at a time when Japan is pushing forward with TPP and other security issues?"

@Yubaru:

As it stated in the article, Japan took it as a slight with the appointment of the last ambassador, because of the lack of name recognition and prestige. No name within politics or the Democratic party gets much bigger and better than "Kennedy" And as paulinusa commented previously, she will have a staff and caretakers..
