I've always been surprised that more homes are not broken into over here due to things like this!

Kick ass! I know how to make myself a protective mask thanks to this picture! No more worries about Tokyo's air for me!

These lot sound pretty hardcore in terms of training and equipment! I hope they are not needed and just remain as a precaution!

And a Greenpeace study ranks Fukushima as the same as a Chernobyl Level 7 incident...

Would you expect anything different from a group that wants nuclear energy banned?

Yuriotani, I don't like seafood much either. I would never go near sushi or sashimi, but most Japanese don't either unless cultural circumstances force them to

Is hunger a cultural circumstance?

Tell me why 25 other regions have banned Japanese foodstuffs if its harmless

I would imagine that it is the same reason the French banned British beef for so long - fear of public outcry.

Badsey - the generators are insanely specialised things and are not items just lying around! They are not your run-of-the-mill generators!

The fact is that rumours and half-truths are, and have already been, spread by articles like this... I liked Smorkian's comment of "armchair nuclear experts" comment and nobody is really helped by the kind of thing!

Whilst I'm not always the biggest fan of American 'operations', I have nothing but respect for the effort they are putting in here when people need them. Any Americans here should be proud of your boys and girls!

I found this very well written and to the point - I'm pretty sure there are a few people who are probably thinking about forwarding this link to their bosses hahaha. Communication is definitely the key in times of issues such as the one we are in right now - stopping rumours and 'what ifs?' from getting out of hand is always an important point.

She did not die alone.

Probably not much of a consolation for her parents though... I just hope all these lives have not been lost for nothing and that we can learn how better to deal with these situations in the future now!

Oh come on, don't be silly... the radiation levels in Tokyo are as close to zero as can be. If you want to buy into the media overhyping that follows words such as "nuclear" and "meltdown", then that is your problem. Unless you live near the power plants, you have very little to worry about.

To be honest, the media hysteria is probably more dangerous than the amount of radiation in Tokyo...

Tokyochris.

Yes, the blood soaked boards where they commited suicide are now part of the ceiling of a shrine too.

Thanks Zenny, I thought that was the place - visited there a few years ago when I first came to Japan and thought it was quite an interesting story. Hopefully the movie will do a good job.....but it's hard to be optimistic

That a "culture" primarily created for a bunch of nerds who have no life other than video games, and manga/anime -- meaning totally consumed by fantasy -- has crept into promotion for a brand as iconic as adidas.

Hollywood make movies based on video games and manga... like it or not, 'nerd culture' is no longer looking in through the window, it has now entered the building.

The FACT is that the maid 'thing' is quite popular in Japan and why shouldn't Adidas use that to their advantage? It's no different to using models or iconic figures in advertising used elsewhere in my opinion

Posted in: Job seekers flop at impressing potential employers See in context

If my experiences in Japan have taught me anything (yes, I realise this may equate to nothing being learnt on my part), the interviews probably consist of:

Do you like natto?

Can you use chopsticks?

Did you know that Japan has 4 seasons?

So it's little wonder that companies are struggling to find the right applicants because they are probably asking the wrong questions...

When our minds make us so afraid of something happening that we alter our actions ... that's terrorism.

But then by that logic, calling in sick because you are scared your boss will be angry because you haven't finished a report would also be terrorism.

I honestly can't believe that that guy behind the attacks had even thought about potential closure of the area as a result of his efforts

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Posted in: Pedestrian paradise See in context

Why is Japan so reluctant to label this attack as "terrorist" is beyond me..

Because it was just a crazy guy who went on a rampage... I don't see how it is possible to connect that to terrorism? The whole point of terrorism is to enforce some kind of social/global change.
