Brainiac; Special rate to mark the opening is ¥35,000 a night. Price goes way up from there.

Window dressing, plain and simple. If someone wants to detonate a bomb at a major station or gathering place, they will. What are they looking for from atop the little platform outside Tokyo Station? Someone "suspicious," or carrying a black ball with a fuse and "bomb" written on the side?

Strangerland Atheism is the absence of belief in any God. Hindus and Buddhists and Shintoists believe in gods.

Strangerland, sorry I was not pedantic enough for you; by definition (Oxford Dictionary) an atheist in one who does not believe in god or godS.(emphasis mine)

Nothing you said counters anything I said, nor did I mention anything about atheism.

Stangerland; You did, though; by definition one who doesn't believe in god is an atheist; your first post says "whether you believe in god or not."

Why is the NATIONAL government even involved in this? It is the TOKYO Olympics, not the Japan Olympics. Can anyone imagine Barack Obama and his Cabinet or the Senate or Congress being involved in, say Los Angeles' Olympic preparations? Ottawa was not involved in Vancouver's Olympics... Whether the tournament was important or not, I think the deeper issue is the seeming lack of depth of Japan. Even though they are not playing their top players, I think they should still be better than they were last night; if this is the future of Japanese football, the future is dim.

What I don't understand is the need to open another design competition for the next stadium. Take the second or third choice that were beat out by Hadid's design and move on. I'm experiencing a great deal of schadenfreude watching this thing turn into clown shoes.

Everyone have a great weekend and stay cool out there!

@sighclops I think that Mori has been absent is among the problems; who is in charge? Honorary President of the Tokyo Olympic Committee Mori, Honorary President of the Tokyo Olympic Committee Mitarai (how come nobody talks about him?), Sports Minister Shimomura, Olympic Minister Endo, Japan Olympic Committee President Takeda or Prime Minister Abe? Way too many chefs in the kitchen...

Posted in: 6,165 treated for heat exhaustion in week to July 19 See in context

This is an exceedingly preventable problem (in most cases); the education on the subject has been in place for years; drink lots of water, stay cool, don't exert oneself in the hottest time of the day. I can understand old people who are unable to take care of themselves, but these numbers are ridiculous. I could even understand the high numbers if it was suddenly this hot in the Yukon or Norway, but it's Japan in July-IT'S HOT. It is NOT a surprise and it was hot last year and the year before that! I also think coaches and teachers are negligent when their charges are requiring hospitalization for heatstroke/heat exhaustion - let the kids drink and rest properly.

“I’m aware that many people are opposed to the plan, as public polls show,” he told a parliamentary committee, promising to explain the increase to the public. It's great that he is aware, the problem is that he doesn't care. Explaining it to the public will be: "It costs more because of many factors, too bad." It's worth noting that the most expensive stadium ever built was $1.6 billion (MetLife in New Jersey); I tend to agree with Harry_Gatto; I'm going to put my guess in at ¥340 billion. Also, How many ministers does this travesty need?

Posted in: More security cameras to be installed on shinkansen trains See in context

Unfortunately, like so many things here, this is just window dressing; nobody will be watching the things and even if there were monitors, there are already 12 cameras and they're planning on adding 24 more to each car, plus two on each exit for another 24, plus one on the "deck" for another 12 or so for a total of about 72 cameras, give or take, depending on which line. Have to agree with Amidalism on this; it's a rarity, not a trend. Also, totally agree with FernGully; go into bathroom, douse oneself in gas, step out, light match-if someone wants to do it, they will.

First, maybe the government should set up a task force to study whether it should establish a committee to ponder whether it should adopt daylight savings; probably only take a few years. Second, I once worked for a Japanese company that announced the introduction of flextime; their core hours were 9 to 5 - the flex was you could come in at 8 and leave at 5, or come in at 9 and leave at 6. Thrid, @strangerland "The best thing would be if they shifted the the clocks ahead one hour permanently, and then did daylight savings time after that." Exactly my thoughts.

noypikantoku: I wasn't serious; I was playing off of strangerland's posts. Strangerland; Hear, hear! To other posters; the 2012 Vendee Globe around the world race saw 20 of the the best-funded, most-experienced sailors in the world start in million-dollar boats. Nine didn't finish, with four out in the first five days.

The 2008 race saw 30 starters; 19 didn't finish, with four out within the first six days.

This woman having to turn back has nothing to do with her being ill-prepared; the ocean and the weather will decide regardless of preparation.

As someone who sailed 3-4 times per week and who worked on a car and passenger ferry growing up, I can say that many of the people I worked with got seasick every season after the winter layoff; the only way to guarantee to be ready and rid of it, is to be on the ocean. British sailor Pete Goss, a former Royal Marine and sailor who sailed solo around the world, speaks of crippling seasickness in the first week out of port.
