Posted in: Haneda Airport doubles number of international flights See in context

I finally used Haneda Airport for international travel this year and I live in Ota-ku. Talk about a breath of fresh air from making the long slog to Narita. I hope they expand daytime flights to include more long haul destinations as the current crop is meager.

Posted in: Biggest threat to Japan whaling: Declining appetites See in context

Compare to other meats, whale meat is expensive and not available everywhere. I've seen whale bacon just once and I've seen whale meat in just a few places. Obviously the demand is not there and the industry should be allowed to fade away.

No worries. Any fine imposed will be less than the profits made with the additional bonus of no legal ramifications.

Posted in: March 11, 2011: What are your memories of that day? See in context

I was at home and when the shaking started. I thought that it would just be another run-of-the-mill quake but it kept going and going. Directly after that, I went around my neighborhood to the shops and saw goods strewn everywhere.

Posted in: Japan’s curious obsession with blood type and personality See in context

I thought these views came from Germany sometime in the early 1900's. I read that a group of German youths came to Japan on some type of excursion and somehow the talk moved to blood type and personality. From there it took off.

Ride along the Tamagawa and you will see plenty of people using their smartphones. Once I was riding slowly towards this woman while she was enthralled with her phone. When I rang the bell she gave me a look as if to say I was in the wrong. People are hooked on these things and act as if their life depended on whatever happening on their phone.

Remove this clown as the head of the 2020 Olympic Committee. It is one thing for any of us regular people to criticize, jeer or even parody the performance of an Olympic Athlete. But when the head of the committee publicly does this, it is time for him to pack his bags and for security to escort him out of the building.
