Posted in: Why do Japanese recycle bins have two openings but dump everything into the same compartment? See in context

It’s partially born out of Japan’s general aversion to snacking while walking (which means locals aren’t likely to generate much trash while out and about) and partially out of the fact that just about everyone, men and women, carry some sort of bag (which lets them carry home whatever trash they do generate), but it’s still an inconvenience.

Guess you can spin anything these days.

Thought it was more due to the fact that the bins were removed sometime in the past for whatever reason.....

Travelled many times on the Shinkansen and never seen any space where they could possibly store this additional luggage.

There are a lot of reserved seats on these trains, a pre-condition for travelling with over-sized luggage, so potentially you would need a lot of reserved space for this luggage.

Hopefully you also get to sit near your luggage - and not walk half the length of the train.

Guess it‘s going to make those annoying announcements on the train even longer!

If a warning light was showing, how come the train left the station at all.

Also, if the train had just left the station, I hardly think it was hurtling along at 280km/h.

And stopping in a tunnel is never a good idea.

Posted in: Traffic reduction falls far short of target in Tokyo highway test See in context

The time needed to travel on a 17-kilometer portion of the expressway between athletes' Olympic village in the waterfront area and the New National Stadium tended to be longer than 20 minutes targeted by the government during the tests, it said.

Tended to be longer?

22 minutes, 30 minutes or maybe an hour?

I thought this idea had been dismissed once because of the pollution aspect of having many ships docked at once with their engines running 24 hours a day discharging fumes

Seems the situation is getting more desperate by the day!
