Posted in: Normal behavior in Japan, taboo abroad See in context

I remember sitting in a sushi spot in Tokyo and this guy took his phone out and started recording me. Not photographed, recording video. I was thrown way off.

A shame, something must be done to protect these fish. I really wish there was an international group that focused on preservation and sustainability. Overfishing bluefin? Fines and penalties!

Posted in: Japan cast as villain in global currency war drama See in context

If the currency is back up to levels like this permanently, I'd like to see more Made in Japan products. These days most of the stuff I see from them is made in China, Korea, or Mexico and quality has taken a toll.

Posted in: Can smart machines do your job? See in context

We are in for an interesting 2015-2020. Lot of tech in infant stages now will change life as we know it. Funny how we're in 2013 though, and it was thought years ago that life would look like the Jetsons now. Not even close.

I get so tired of that photo of her crying, plastered all around Tokyo. This ambassador job is "well deserved".

Funny, many times my waitress will leave while I'm still eating and disappear, that never happens in the West unless they tell you beforehand...

Crazy how old 38 is in the sports world, and young everywhere else. Too bad for Hideki-san.

As a Mariners fan, I am devastated, but as a fan of Ichiro, I'm glad he gets to play for a ring.

Posted in: Japan's April trade deficit grows to Y520.3 bil See in context

Nice, my car is pictured. It's hard to find Made in Japan cars anymore, everything is being manufactured offshore. But the trade deficit proves Japan is in quicksand.

Posted in: Japan faces 'extinction' in 1,000 years, researchers say See in context

At some point the government will have to REALLY provide a 'rebate' for having kids. That and this guy fails to realize Androids and robots will be part of society by then.

A slap on the wrist. This is scary man, how much tainted food will we be eating in the next few years?

Posted in: Japan 'no longer a rich country' by 2050: think tank See in context

Disappointing. I think I remember, maybe 10 years ago, being a teen and watching NHK about the declining birthrate. It's like a rollercoaster that never stops the downhill surge. What can be done about that? Encouraging birth with stimulus or cheaper daycare is a start, but seems like a tall order to get it back up without immigration big-time.

Yikes. I've stayed at this hotel twice, that is disappointing that this problem has happened more than once.

What a shame. So much corruption and greed in the parts industry, from the suppliers to the distributors (dealers) to the small shops.

Hilarious, I was just in the NY "flagship" and he was boasting about how it's the largest one in the world. I asked him how that's true, he turned off his microphone and said a Japanese flagship would trump it soon. Guess he wasn't lying.

Sad, 77 is too young. Anyone who has been to Japan should be familiar with Mori-san.

Posted in: Streep talk See in context

The greatest-film-critic-ever and pulitzer-prize winning Roger Ebert stated of this film, "You have to be very talented to work with Meryl Streep. It also helps to know how to use her. "The Iron Lady" fails in both of these categories." He did however praise her performance...

Letting critics decide movies for you?
