That why all the black bus crew was at Ueno Station yesterday…I was wondering.

Nah, they always seem to be hanging out around there. Most Sundays.

The ironic thing is that countries that have abolished it generally have a lower murder rate. It's called progression.

Posted in: Microsoft retires Skype, internet call pioneer See in context

Are there any other means of making international phone calls similar to Skype, that is not using your mobile plan?

I know you cant call landlines on it, but for me Whatsapp is still just good enough, even though Meta is trying its best to enshittify it, similar to how MS enshittified Skype and ran it into the ground. Like most software these conglomerates aquire.

The story should be that 120,000+ abortions were performed (offically) last year vs just 720,000 births. An ad for Linepharma?

From what I've heard from a few friends working in TV, he kinda liked to put his hands on places he wasn't supposed to (mostly 女子アナ's bodies).

女子アナ = I see what you did there.

Please to inform us how it is the poorest nations have the highest birthrates...when you are implying "money" is the issue.

Among other things, due to the low social status of women, poor education and high child mortality rates. Elementary, my dear Watson.

All valid grants to help fledgling businesses to get off the ground. I don't know why anybody would complain about this.

Has to be sarcasm. Has to be.

Yep, nothing unexpected here. Fertility rate peaked in early 70s. Can throw more money at it, but won't change a thing.

A pity. An amazing museum. Been multiple times. Love Kanazawa. If could relocate to once place in Japan, this would be it.

I could give them several bottles. Got lots from an old japanese guy who used to collect it at duty free shops when traveling around the world during the bubble years. Never had a thing for Cognac.

@kurisupisu

The narrative is that the temperature is becoming higher each year yet polar ice is actually increasing.

Ok... How about a citation?

There are plently of citations if you just look. And if you looked to a comment above somebody mentioned Al Gore's film, for"historical" evidence that they got it wrong. People conveniently choose to forget.

Another massive snowstorm, another tragedy. Either try and clear the roof or potentially be buried alive. Got to feel for people up there.

If they continue to work as they desire, we can expect a further boost in the labor force. See in context

But the government keeps on sending money to the Ukraine and funding military expansion, and then there are the endless white elephant projects. So it is not a question of not having enough money give retirees a comfortable retirement. We need a version of DOGE here in Japan.

Amazed something hasn't happened in central Tokyo yet. The whole city is just a disaster waiting to happen. It's basically a network of canals paved over, crisscrossed by subways and other underground infrastructure. And much of it's sinking.

But consumer prices outpaced wage growth with a 3.2 percent rise in the reporting year, although the pace decelerated from a 3.8 percent increase in 2023.

My situation: a 0% pay rise VS a 30% rise in the price of everyday goods, when including shrinkflation.

Somebody is telling porkies.

Yeah, they were phased out during Covid. You just get notice in your box demanding you pay now.

Posted in: Starbucks to introduce location-based pricing at some stores nationwide See in context

If someone is nonstop on their computer or phone, your cafe doesn't even become a communication space. You might as well just set up tiny booths.

Indeed, most cafes here are treated as places to silently study, with the tapping fingers on keyboards the only sound to be heard. Was given the look for daring to talk in one Starbucks. Never went back.

Posted in: OpenAI announces new 'deep research' tool for ChatGPT ahead of Tokyo meeting See in context

In other news, Sam Altman recently said: "I still expect, although I don't know what, and this is over a long period of time, not a next year or year after that kind of thing. But, over a long period of time, I still expect that it will be some change required to the social contract given how powerful we expect this technology to be."

Another billionaire who thinks he should determine our future "social contract". Sounds like a Bond villain intent on total world domination.
