@JustMy--Here it's different because, unlike many countries, the taxi industry is not made up of first generation immigrant/refugee drivers. Uber and Lyft in the most expensive U.S. cities like SF are dependent on refugees from Afghanistan etc. who might drive for both services to avoid break frequency safety rules, at least in some recent reporting I've read. Getting a larger pool of needy refugees working as drivers is one challenge to getting the rideshare business model off the ground in Japan, if emulating the way it works abroad is the intention.

At times when players think for an hour between moves, not to mention taking a full day or more to finish a game, has got to drive the commentators crazy. What tactical information can they discuss for that long, before getting into the default mode of speculation about the players' psychological states? That is why shogi, chess, dungeons and dragons, and other slow paced board games stay at an underground level.

@Blacklab--speaking of shady campaign figures, his chairman Paul Manafort was just imprisoned at Riker's Island. Do you hope that Trump, after declaring indefinite martial law, is still the president when Manafort's seven year sentence finishes in 2026?

@elephant200 "What is an underground idol?"--My guess is someone not working for the major mainstream agencies like Johnny's or the ___48 syndicate, so not featured on national media. Walking around Akihabara, you can find flyers advertising groups like Ms. Hashimoto's ex-group Kamen Joshi who wear Friday the 13th style glow in the dark masks. An interesting interview topic would be to explain the "Masked Women" concept, although as a retired member she would probably rather discuss her new political career.

USS Wasp is an interesting name for a ship. I could google it but I'll just assume it's named after the non-amphibious insect and not a person or old racial acronym.

Oh, it looks like Kakuryu is back in a tie for first. If he wins it, I would like to see if Trump can handle saying this into the mic intelligibly: "I present the Trump Trophy to the champion, yokozuna Kakuryu Rikisaburo, also known in his homeland as Mangaljalav Anand. His tenacious oshidashi and yorikiri bigly overwhelmed his rivals etc etc." My bet is they will just quickly hand over the trophy without a speech.

Interesting photo from one of the regional exhibition matches, at an outdoor venue in some smaller city.

I hope Trump doesn't assume sumo is fake. If it were an act, would Hakuho be allowed to dominate for the latter half of Heisei, and would high ranking wrestlers constantly sit out with injuries? I wonder if Trump will react badly if wrestlers' blood gets spattered on his germ-o-phobic person? Then there's the significance of handing his trophy to a maegashira upstart (if Asanoyama is still leading--haven't checked today).

A while ago NHK used Pak-kun the celeb/comedian as a guest announcer. He sat down to interview an Australian family viewing from the back wall seats of the arena. The father joked that he promised his kids to take them to Disneyland but then brought them to sumo instead. Good choice--much better story to tell everyone back in Oz.

"His wife is expected of"--So you mean it is anticipated that she may violate the bail conditions someday? That is even weaker than the legally flimsy "suspected." Only punish her/them if there is clear proof of something wrong. Prosecutors expect/suspect doesn't meet a high enough standard.

Ghosn is expected to be given a large retirement bonus in the future. Better lock him up posthaste.

@dark--"a bit old for being a spy"--yeah, even spies need to retire and collect their pensions sometime. Otherwise countries would often hire retirement-age spies to do their dirty work. One plus for aged spies is they would be doing less time in prison. In this case, a 5 1/2 sentence could be more a symbolic warning to other careless contractors than their legal code's recommended punishment for a serious spying violation.

@Ah_so, Canadian magazine Macleans is pretty clear in their article about "The Arctic Restaurant and Hotel, which also served as a brothel", stating Donald Trump's "ancestral fortune began with a two-story outfit selling swan mean and sex."

Sensationalized, sure, but tourists are going to be even less likely to fly and drive to the Yukon only to see an old dry goods store, right? Golly, check out the selection of potato sacks and woolen blankets over there!

@1glenn--it is an interesting story, though I think the brothel and store businesses were in Canada and pre-statehood Alaska.

Last year I read something about how the Canadian government purchased one of the old brothel buildings to try to turn into a tourist attraction in one of those northern prairie ghost towns that were hopping places at one time. A large number of Americans, and to a lesser extent Canadians, wanting to drive for days to visit an old brothel is what the government is betting on, but I don't know if it's going to be a money-maker.

"Fred was a powerful member of the school's board" but would never do anything nepotistic for his offspring at same school. You're right, Hollywood will be sure to leave out any negative critiques of the Trumps, AKA propaganda.

I look forward to the part where Boy Wonder joins the school doo wop choir, Bone Spurs and Harmony. He meets future pal Cohen who decades later is still singing like a canary.

@Joe Blow--Audiences are mostly aware that movies are fiction and documentaries are supposedly truth.

A hard task will be finding the perfect title: "Lil' Bone Spurs Breaks Curfew" or "Lil' B.S. Makes the Golf Team."

To get conservatives to buy in, it must star one living descendant of the chimp that Reagan acted with in his classic documentary Bedtime for Bonzo.

Just shorten it to "private citizens shouldn't impersonate law officers." There's no "have to" needed.

As for the wall, Trump said he prefers it painted black. Wouldn't an unpainted wall be more cost effective? What percent of undocumented arrivals come over the existing fence system anyway? Why did Bush spend money on fence construction if it's not doing the job? What comes after the wall proves ineffective? Are politicians giving us legit solutions or just political posturing?

@Blacklabel--"we have to protect our borders" rhetoric--too bad you have militia types playing border patrol and getting arrested themselves, like that guy in NM a few weeks ago. Vigilantes are just making more work for law enforcement by stirring up trouble. How many newcomers ran through while the authorities were occupied arresting the faux-border patrol dudes and impounding their fortified camper?

"he was divisive and played racial and identity politics"--Huh, can't tell if you are talking about Obama or Trump, who barely has a clue how to unite his own party, something Obama seemed much better at. @Blacklabel--I'm so relieved to hear that all types of people are welcomed with open arms in the American south. I guess our misconception of the closed minded southerner doesn't match the reality. So it's a mystery why Mr. Obama didn't set up his Presidential Library in the welcoming bosom of Alabama or Texas, given that the locals hold him in such high regard, always singing his praises and begging him to relocate there.
