In countries/locales where smoking is still allowed in restaurants, TripAdvisor should make an effort to show in their listings whether a restaurant allows smoking. It would make them much more useful.

If Trump says to Japan, either (i) step up to a comparable (as %age of GDP) defense spending level to the US, or (ii) we'll abrogate the security treaty, he would bring some much needed accountability to Japanese policy.

Japan could end up like Italy or Germany, well-known fascist dens of tyranny constantly at war with anyone they can reach, due to their lack of an Article 9.

Islam is about 1,500 years old.

When Christianity was 1,500 years old it showed many of the same characteristics. Forcible conversions, the Inquisition, massacres of "pagans, Mohammedans and unbelievers", the Thirty Years War. Very similar to radical Islam today.

Christianity evolved. Let's hope Islam does too.

They published their goal before they died - at the same time as the photos with the ISIS flags. They said their goal was "to rid the world of atheists and apostates".

It's so childish not to take common sense precautions like direct intelligence sharing because of 80 year old history.

Posted in: Do you agree with U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump's call for Japan to drastically increase its financial contribution to maintain American military bases? See in context

More importantly than the cash, the US should tell Japan, Korea and Taiwan that we've had enough of the wasteful bilateral arrangements. Either they quit whining about ancient history and get their act together for a collective NATO style common defense, or we leave them to deals with the Norks & the dragon. Enough with the free-loading.

OK, time to get behind Trump. Even if you didn't like him at first, he is now the only option to defeat Hillary and stop the continual expansion of government. Open your wallets - you can send him up to $2,700 (or $5,400 if you send before June 7 & mark half for the primary). Let's go guys, there's a Clinton to stop!

Posted in: Japanese money in offshore tax havens could solve a lot of problems at home See in context

When you have a 55% marginal tax rate it will result in (i) people substituting leisure for work - retiring earlier, (ii) people taking less risk - buying government bonds instead of opening a new business, and (iii) tax evasion/avoidance. Moronic policy usually brings unwanted results - this is not rocket science.

A 55% marginal tax rate is one of the worst in the world. They need to cut it to encourage risk taking and entrepreneurs.

If Trump says to Japan "either pull your weight by spending the same proportion of GDP on defense as we do or defend yourselves without the US treaty", what will the Japanese do?

Non-nuclear defense does not work against nuclear powers like North Korea and China.

All handouts. That's why Goldman Sachs is paying hundreds of thousands to Hillary but not to Cruz or Trump. Hillary will keep the corporate welfare coming. Cruz won't. Trump - who knows.

For many takers the threat of cutting back on taxpayer handouts is terrifying. They will fight, scream, shout and do anything they can to maintain their access to other peoples' money.

Posted in: Although this is another country's election, Japan's allies should raise their voices to help prevent the birth of a 'Voldemort' president in the United States. See in context

Everyone has the right to have an opinion on the election, even foreigners. And Americans have the right to consider or not consider all such opinions before deciding.

Personally I often find it useful to listen to "elite" European opinion and then do the opposite - for example in the Carter/Reagan or Bush/Dukakis elections.

Posted in: Do you think the government should go ahead with its plan to raise the consumption tax from the current 8% to 10% in April of 2017? See in context

All taxes are a drag on growth and create economic distortions. But a broad-based sales tax is probably the least distorting.
