I agree with not blaming or judging these people; but the society in which they lived needs savaging. The heavy group-orientation of Japanese society means that individual life and freedom are without value, as does the straitjacket of conformity in which everyone is conditioned to be restrained. Everything about Japan, whether by accident or design, is geared to crush the individual, to turn them into a worker ant whose sole purpose is to strengthen and glorify Japan. I saw an article about suicide in Metropolis which overplayed the shyness issue a bit, but had some interesting ideas: http://metropolis.co.jp/features/the-last-word/more-than-just-a-number/ Cellphones, the internet, websites are just tools, and shouldn't be blamed. What's wrong with Japan that so many people would rather die than live here?
