Direct employed ALT's by the BOE are paid approx yen 2,300,000 per annum as the school holidays aren't paid. As for the comment, they don't have tp pay city tax as they are govt employees, that left me completely befuddled! First time in 23 years I heard that one.

Posted in: What is the best age to start teaching a child a second language? See in context

In 1991, a Russian professor told us to start teaching from birth, but that each person should keep to their mother tongue and don't mix the languages. Apparently bilingual parents mixing languages make it difficult for the kids to sort out. So , I spoke English to my son, my wife spoke mandarin Chinese to my son and he got Japanese at kindergarten and Elementary school. There were no problems whatsoever ever and now at 21 years old he is completely fluent in all 3 languages. The Professor stated that the worst problem was Japanese mothers trying to teach their kids English at the same time as Japanese. They weren't able to sort out each language .Most kids will differentiate by parent or location.

Posted in: New Zealand bans foreign students from prostitution See in context

Overseas students don't have family or a social network to fall back on. Most students who take up prostitution actually do so to pay their tuition fees , and have borrowed heavily from "sources "in China. So most haven't willingly gone into this profession. This problem exists in Australia and England as well. The New Zealand govt is actually passing this legislation to ensue the well being of the students.

Before anybody starts feeling sorry for bieber, remember that countless kids in London had paid for tickets and for him to show up to his own concert 2 hours late. Generally shows the contempt to the public which has filled his pockets.

If the media is lying, then sue them. If they aren't, then shut up and grow up.

It was obvious from what I saw in Saitama, that there was a mix of CHinese sand and JApanese dirt being rolled around. Here is a quote from an expert

Sakamoto, a professor of electrical engineering at Kogakuin University in Tokyo and an expert on pollution analysis, found yellow sand in a dust sample taken Sunday from Nerima Ward that apparently got mixed up with other dust.

@jeff lee I think you will find it was a mixture of both Chinese and Japanese sands. From the top of Aeon car park in Iwatsuki you could see farm dirt swirling while at a higher elevation you see clouds of brownish nature coming in. I have lived in China for 5 years and also lived in Japan for 15, so When I write something that offends your nationalistic Tendencies don't call us ignorant, usually there are facts behind the article.

@barry Exactly what I was thinking. If you have a look at the latest map of radiation published, the dirt whipped up by the winds are from the kanto region ESP Kashiwa and the surrounding areas. It is the top layer which contains the caesium So I hope there has been testing done for this particular threat. Around minami ku saitama city was especially bad and You had to remain indoors.

@mr kobayashi I have just read your above comment and realised that if the repair fund has already built up 70,000,000 in reserve funds ,then you must have bought second hand. My question to you, is this condo in a govt UR building or in a public danchi.

@supey11, Hmmm. How much is the disaster property insurance each year ? Something I haven't actually thought about. In new Zealand it was reasonable but then the govt didn't have enough in the pot to cover the Christchurch disaster.

@mrkobayashi, If you go on foreclosed homes website in Japan , it is very rare for the maintenance fee and general repair fees to be under ¥20,000 per month and usually not over 30,000. There are usually 300 to 400 condos listed each month From all over Japan and the average is about 25,000 a month.

As a side note to the commentators above, we are considering purchasing a property in order to stop paying rent.We are not interested in purchasing a condominium because of the maintenance fee, extra parking costs which rapidly approaches 50,000 yen per month in the suburbs. A house seems the better deal in the long run and you have the advantage of it being your own land. Only have to worry about the land tax each year and maintenance according to your schedule and do it yourself abilities. Our next door neighbour pays 70,000 yen each time the Ojisan comes to prune the trees! The amounts paid under condominium maintenance is eye watering.

As to the comment , anybody can get a mortgage, you only need money and ID, exactly who offers a mortgage to a foreigner without permanent residency or spouse visa? We have more than 50% deposit but cannot get a mortgage. Anybody including the writer of this article, could you give me an example of a lending institution willing to do so.

Much obliged.
