Posted in: 10 tips to help you survive the Japanese summer See in context

Telling people not to use their air conditioners is just silly. There is nothing wrong with using it if you know how or already accustomed to it like many Americans are. Recently I read a website basically explaining what many Americans already know about the costs of an Air con. Turning it on and off constantly actually wastes energy because it takes allot of energy to power it on and have it cool down the room you are in especially if it is a big room. It is more cost effective to leave it running on a comfortable setting so that it doesn't have to work extra hard to cool the room down every time you turn it back on. My mother in law turns hers on and off every 10 minutes thinking she is saving energy when she is actually wasting it.

squeeksJUL. 08, 2013 - 02:19AM JST Are you not allowed to dig a grave for loved ones in the backyard in Japan, gather some loved ones, and bury them? Much less expensive method.

Squeeks..what backyard? Most Japanese homes don't have much of a yard to speak off and many live in apartments...these people in the article lived in an Apartment...also Japanese are cremated not buried.

I dislike seeing her on tv all the time and she acts stupid and childishly. I do feel bad that she will get caught up in her dads wrong doings though but at the same time would like to see less of her on tv and on packaging..her childish actions are not cute in any way.

Posted in: Male nurse arrested for taking kids swimming without parents' permission See in context

people keep saying this is not news and wondering what is wrong with this...a grown man is taking children away for around 4 hours and has done it multiple times..it doesn't matter where he took them at all..what matters here is they were taken without parents knowing and he TOLD the children not to tell their parents where they had been! If he is telling the kids not to tell mommy and daddy it means he knew he was doing something wrong. This is news because this man basically kidnapped these kids.

Posted in: Wada says Mari Yaguchi should apologize over illicit affair See in context

blah blah blah I find both of them boring and annoying especially Mari Yaguchi. I don't have to be flipping through channels anymore seeing Mari's face on every show going "mouuu iyadaaaa!" let her do as she pleases and pay for the consequence in the end. I agree with everybody else on Wada minding her own business and Yaguchi needing to apologize to her husband not her fans. Her husband was wronged in this not the fans.

Posted in: Encounter with an American school lunch See in context

putting large amounts of ketchup on anything isn't the cause for weight gain in American children...a table spoon of ketchup there are roughly 19 calories in a table spoon of ketchup while Japanese put large amounts of Mayo on many of their dishes..a tablespoon of mayo is almost 100 calories! The condiment doesn't make the child overweight it is the amount of oil used in food and the serving sizes of the foods they receive. The food choices he saw? that is amazing compared to the choices I had as a kid. When I was a kid my choices were hamburger or chicken sandwich floating on grease before put onto the bun with nothing on it with french fries and a fruit cup or pizza with french fries and a fruit cup. They did have premade salads but after finding hair in the first salad I ate at school I never ate it again.

Kids school lunches are getting more healthier all the time. They need to fix portions though and taste but it is better than what my friends daughter goes through at a japanese school. She is punished and yelled at if she doesn't eat all of her food..she doesn't like potatoes or beans and they don't give her the choice to avoid those..so what happens? she comes home with food in her pockets because she hides it from the teachers who lurk behind their backs as they eat. Can't say this is the same for every school though.

Posted in: Parents advised to give the boot to their sponging adult kids See in context

In my husbands family he wasn't looking for work or even thinking of work and did nothing to contribute but his sister worked hard daily and paid the parents to stay in their house. When I met my husband I said if he wanted to marry me then he had to get a job..when it was suggested that we live with them I said no thank you we can be independent. They were too worried of how he would survive outside of his own home even if he was married. He does well for himself now and his sister does better her job moved her out of their house completely and now his 60 year old parents have the privacy and freedom they deserve. No parent should be afraid to push their chick out of the nest and tell them to get a damn job.

Posted in: Two dead, one injured in arson-murder case See in context

Mirai HayashiJUN. 03, 2013 - 07:56PM JST I would have suspected the 65-year old survivor to be the murderer/arsonist. Who slashes someone's wrists to try to kill them? Stabbing or cutting his throat would be much more effective. He probably killed the unknown man and his wife, set the joint on fire, and then slashed his own wrists...Most likely a love triangle gone awry.

I don't think a man can slash his wrists enough for it to be nearly severed off..why would this man attack his wife and an unknown person and then burn his home down? Love triangle? where do you get this information?

Posted in: Great eats on the go See in context

When it comes to displayed street foods like what you see in china town in Kobe just be careful with what you order and when you order especially if you are a tourist. Last time I was in Kobe we went to their china town and allot of food was just sitting out. It wasn't summer yet but we decided to avoid street foods due to norovirus and flu outbreaks all over the area. We did eventually eat some but we ate it from vendors who just finished cooking and assembling the dish and bought it before it was set out on display. Pay attention to the time of year, how long something may have been sitting out and if any viruses are out breaking at the time and you shouldn't have too much trouble. I have been eating food sitting out at street markets, super markets, and bakeries for 3 years in Japan and haven't become sick yet. My husbands co worker got norovirus once due to sushi that had sat out too long and the shop sold it anyway because it was the end of the day they wanted to get rid of everything.

seriously? Kiki doesn't need a "wild side" everybody loves Kiki for how charming, helpful and honest she is..and Jiji an alien? seriously? He was just a normal cat and due to Kiki being a witch made it possible for her to understand him...I don't know how I feel about this film already BUT I will wait and give it a try before judging too harshly. Also I agree with Borax on the FX

Posted in: Aging Japan complains over the noise of children See in context

Something like this happened to me once. I teach a private class at a Jidoukan which is a place for children to go. Upstairs there are rooms that can be rented by anyone. We rent a room and teach 3 classes a day with up to 10 kids per class. We sing, we dance, we shout out English words because it is more fun that way because they are all aged between 3-7. One day a lady came to our room complaining of noise and that they were having a business meeting next to our class. I said "that's too bad you came to a Jidoukan for a business meeting" Whenever someone tries to complain to the head of the building about our noise he always says "they are kids and this class teaches here every week" If you don't like the natural noise of children then perhaps you should move somewhere with less children.

Posted in: AKB48′s Yuki Kashiwagi sparks debate over 'vulgar' video See in context

I guess you've never watched Japanese porn. The similarities are beyond coincidental, the way she gently holds the yam in her hand and grates it around, then licks off the white liquid... what else would the purpose be, other than to sexually arouse the Japanese male fan base? I wonder what she'll do with the okura? : )

I HAVE seen Japanese porn before and still didn't find anything wrong with this. As a matter of fact now that I am checking their youtube they seem to do stupid little clips like this before. I found another video exactly like this of her eating Natto.

I am a woman and I didn't really see how this was vulgar? pointless yes..but the only way I could see anybody thinking it is dirty is if they were immature..if I had watched this without reading the article I would have just been confused..and her breasts aren't even showing her clothing is very modest so I can't see the breast shots that were mentioned..was the video edited recently after the attention it got?

I am assuming nobody knew about this baby at all since she gave birth to it at home. It says she is a single mother does she have other children? Why should her mother be punished sakurala? from what I understand of this article the mother didn't know until she found the baby? maybe I am wrong but that is what I understood anyway. There are way too many cases of women getting pregnant and going unnoticed..how are they hiding their pregnancies..

Not sure about other areas of Japan but Aichi is soooo outdated everywhere even in clinics! My orthopedic doctor is still on windows XP and it shocks me! The doctor himself uses an updated computer but all of his staff are on severely outdated computers and OS. When my husbands old company went bankrupt they got rid of a bunch of their computers and my husband came home with one running on windows XP I was like...seriously? your entire company was running on these old dinosaur computers?

It's pretty bad attitude to say "why should we change" because computers evolve..all electronics evolve with time so you have to replace the old with the new.
