what this article failed to state is that these PRDCs are capital protected i.e after 30years these temples get their money back. Basically they are just sitting on paper losses (albeit large ones at that). I cant understand (even for monks or any person) to lock up their money for such a long time. Anyways monks should be promoting divinity and peace and should not be bickering so much.

learning to be zen on the train, being patient and understanding is the key. The prob with tokyo is space comes at a premium...lack of space causes people to get agro...commute peacefully and you'll enjoy it more...well at least it wont get on your nerves as much.

This is my fav show on Sun. I like the diff contestants that come on, the famous enka singers that cheer them and mostly guessing how many gongs they get. They often have a few oldies come on, even though they can not sing, but its because they have character and make for a good show. Unfort this guy's obssession to get on, blinded him from the real purpose of the show i.e. having fun.

Posted in: Vietnamese noodles: a cultural pho-nomenon See in context

gaijin traveller - not that one. Actually been there and dont like the pho. Thi Thi is near book off, its basement floor so a little hard to find..they have a menu at street level. Try the banh mi there, its pretty close as well. Watch the chilli though.

@ afanofjapan

Anyone know where to get good, authentic pho in Tokyo?

the pho here is "so so", prob not as good as the bankstown or cabramatta districts in Sydney, so i wouldnt compare. There are two places i recommend which are "close enough' , "miss saigon" in shibuya - near citibank, the lady is vietnamese and the pho is abit different but it tastes fairly authentic. The other one is called "Thi Thi" at Kamata, abit hard to find, but the pho is more authentic there (although abit salty) - owner is also vietnamese. I like this place since it has more variety. In both places the food is cheap - not like the rip off Japanese versions, which supposedly serve pho, but really just a bit of chicken broth, some chewy noodles, some negi and two little cha shew peices.

I'd like to see them try to export watermelon that cost ichi man to vietnam or even singapore... japan can't even feed itself, they consume more than they produce ...japan is a net importer as most comments have noted above, in the eye of foreigners, Japan agricultural products = glowing stuff from Fukushima

Posted in: Why do people climb mountains in the middle of winter when there are blizzards, high risk of avalanches and poor visibility? See in context

just like climbing any mountain with snow, be prepared, know the weather and your limitations. I watched a Discovery documentary on climbing everest and the expedition leader was never afraid to call the climbers back if he felt the weather was getting worst. Smart people survive and experience the thrills, people not so clever unfort die.

they're more likely to target the middle age (oyagi) group than young voters. Also AKB will prob get more votes than any of the real candidates (mostly sourced from the above age group mentioned).
