Just thought I'd point out that Anit-semiticism refers to both Jews and Muslims by definition. Both come from semitic languages and peoples orginally. Nazi Germany used the word for just Jews, so people think it just refers to them

Posted in: Too much katakana contributing to Japan's malaise See in context

Pretty lame to blame mass suicides and weakness on katakana and a prior occupation. Blaming others isntead of looking at your own internal reasons is ridiculous. We aren't forcing them to use katakana. Katakana actually confuses me more than original Japanese words sometimes. This Kaga reaks of old man racism and hate

Posted in: U.S. vet who caught Tojo speaks out See in context

Tojo was guilty for what happened with the Japanese army during WWII, but he was pretty much made the main bad guy because they didn't want to prosecute the Emperor. They figured the Japanese would except things better if the Emperor was left alone, even though he was a main man behind what the Japanese military did. This doesn't excuse Tojo, but I think he knew that he was going to cast the main villain

Btw, Avimazalto, I'm Jewish, and have plenty of Muslim friends. Last time I checked, MOSQUES aren't generally used to teach people to harm others

It's two blocs away from the 9/11 site and would be good place for religious understanding. I cannot fathom someone opposing this center. We need to spread more moderate Islam in the world. And these people are Americans, which gives them the same rights that we all cherish

bicultural: bengoshi probably flew coach, like most of us. The coach seats are tiny, and if it wasn't for the better service, I wouldn't fly ANA

All this talk about hurting Japanese pride... The film points out something that many in Japan don't know about. It's informing people. While it is bias, it's a topic that should be discussed. The right wing nut jobs are always whining about something. You know what hurts Japanese pride more? A government that changes every year

Dolphin meat is horribly toxic. They shouldn't be eating it to begin with. If the meat wasn't toxic, I wouldn't care as much. Also, the government sometimes mislabels dolphin as whale, which is pretty heinous considering the mercury levels.

roughneck: Not everyone in Taiji eats dolphin. The local council in Taiji was against feeding dolphin to their children.

Asada did not look happy when they announced her scores. Of all the skaters, she looked the most stressed throughout this whole event. I was not surprised by the standings. All three women put themselves far in front of the competition. I was very happy to see Mirai's expression when she got 4th. She seemed very happy with her scores and performance. She was the best of the rest:)

Not all Asians are small. South Koreans and Mongolians are big. And I really hate the coverage here too. I'm fine with showing what all the J athletes did, but at least show the performances of the winners. They showed one jump by Lycasek

my2sense What brought this comment? Usually I find these profiles a bit annoying, but her's seemed ok. She actually appears in dramas and shows. Not your typical Japanese tarento

Posted in: Japan slow to embrace medical tourism See in context

The drugs are too weak for a lot of foreigners. I'm also not a big fan of having to take 7 different drugs for a fever instead of one cough syrup or pill. When your sick medicine is cheap, which is very nice. But prescription meds are the same price as the US. Plus, they don't carry the acid reflux medicine I need, which goes with what JeffLee says about cutting edge drugs. There's other issues, such as the drugs not working for me and a lack of actual checking the doctors do, but it's nice to hear they are helping those with serious conditons from abroad.

Posted in: How well founded is Japan's gastronomic pride? See in context

The first time I was in Japan, I gained a lot of weight. I went from 88 kg to 100 kg! When I came back to the US, I controlled my diet, ate wheat bread and avoided HFCS, and tried keep my portions in check. I got all the way down to 84 kg. Now I'm back in Japan, and back to 95 kg. I'm not going to totally blame Japan for this, as I could workout more, but this is kind of messed up. I started eating granola in the morning, but my school lunches are not that great. I walk a ton more here, eat the same dinners like the US, but have gained weight. They like to fry everything here and include large amounts of rice and salt in all their food. And then I can't take home leftovers. Pretty frustrating for me :(
