"This is why being able to make your own interceptor missile is so critical. Korea's getting 2000 interceptors for $30 billion because they make them themselves, while Japan's importing 73 interceptors for $3.3 billion."

what korea getting is SM3 Block IA/B (high Altitude 150-500km/range 900km) average cost 10-22 millions $ each. Japan has this version entered service since 2007 and currently has at least 200 standby on the 6 Aegis destroyers at sea and a few hundreds in reserved. So no surprise here if SK to produce 2000 of these for $30 billions.

What Japan getting is SM3 Block IIA (also called ADVANCED SM3, High Altitude 1000km/range 2500km) average cost 45-50 millions $ each. The difference? these can intercept missiles from launching China and Russia.

Samit Basu

"Yes WTO can, there are several established precedences banning all forms of export control except in cases of war or near war situations."

Reviews the case where WTO against export controlled. This case is difference as there are neither export quotas or embargo of goods. SK can purchase just as any other countries that are not on the whitelist, just that they don't have more expedited paper work approval. Tell me then, base on what ground does SK have a case in this? Does it mean everybody can just bring Japan or any countries to WTO and demand to have preferential treatments on goods they purchase from?

it doesn't make sense when you bring up SK won 6-0 from disputes with JP. What does it have to do with this? does it make SK right? heck no, a country with $28k per capita gdp still declaring itself as developing in order to get preferential treatments on trade is never rightful in my book.

"Then why do Koreans continue to detect excessive level of radiation from non-Fukushima seafood?

No one will believe them lying South Koreans

WTO believed the Koreans over the Japanese and sided with the Koreans, and ruled that Korea can continue to ban Fukushima food."

so, besides S Korea, which other countries also return the food to Japan?

just to let you know, WTO has no merit in this decision. Why, it handles trade related mater, which it can't demand country A to import goods from counry B regardless of whether those are in line with the standard requirment in country A or not. It regulates if country A, for no apparent reasons, put up hig tariff barrier on goods import from country B or put an embargo on counry A. WTO simply let S Korea do the work, if you find something not up to your standard, you can return or not import from, purely business decision. If S Korea wants to convince others that those are unsafe, they should consult with WHO instead, yet they chose not to.

On the other hand, when Japan decided to remove them from the white list, WTO can't demand Japan to veto the plan, simply since there is no embargo (SK can buy, just take longer) or tariff barrier, WTO will have to go along and say somthing like hoping Japan to reconsider.

smithinjapan...you have been in this forum long enough, and you should know that nobody in this forum is in denial mode of what Japan did in the past; however, the main discussion topics are mostly related to how S. Korea is using history for its own schemes.

"This has nothing to do with 1965 money, the the money Japanese companies owe today is damages for the illegal and criminal conscription of Koreans during wartime."

an agreement is an agreement, learn how to honor an agreement before talking about trust.

"No, Korea will just cut off Japan from its radar feed so Japan can't see incoming missiles, until it's only seconds away from landing on Japan."

nope, Aegis system can see it pretty far away. Now given Japan more reasons to build more Aegis destroyers and Ashore systems. Then, another reason for SK to complain about, Japan rearming lol.

"The damages compensation is not covered by the 1965 treaty."

nope, a treaty for all war reparations and to normalize the relationship means it covers all.

" Nowhere on the treaty says "individuals who suffered". To the contrary, Japan claimed there were no sufferings by Koreans since Imperial Japan was a benevolent ruler. This is why Japan refused Korean proposal to include the word "damages" in the treaty text."

Hey i'm not pointing a gun at you, you agree to the treaty, so honor it.

edited, it's the Aegis Ashore system, not THAAD. Aegis Ashore has a wider range vs THAAD that is currently deployed in S K by US force.

"GSOMIA is critical for Japan's national security, not so much for Korea's."

if you mean missiles information, here you go:

F35 can lurker around N. K airspace and ready to shootdown non ballistic missles.

Aegis ships are able to shootdown Ballistic missiles, yet it has a shorter detection range.

Then once THAAD is finished, all missiles from N.K are useless, Cut the GSOMIA=quick build up time for THAAD.

Besides missiles, what can NK do to Japan?

"Sharp quit the phone-sized OLED business. Japan will remain relying 100% on Korea for the supply of OLED screens."

duh, ever heard of JDI? they have both the technology and production capacity. price wise, they were higher compared to Chinese and Korean makers, due to higher operation cost. Still, with things going on this way, they are more than happy to supply J based phone makers.

btw, Sharp OLED business isn't even a fracion of JDI.

"Here is an illustration of why the US will never leave Korea, according to Bob Woodward, the journalist who brought down Richard Nixon."

you know why?

keep the fighting within Korea.

Korea itself is dispensable. 1/3 economy size and harder to defense vs Japan.

Scare tactic, to station troops for balance check China. If worse to come, move those troops to Japan.

That's why.
