am sure the local media is already making plans to run around asking the foreign athletes about

the usual questions. Is it your first time to Japan, what do you think of Japan , do you like Japanese food,

What do you think about Japanese toilet,

And the last question and request from Japanese to foreigners. Please tell us your message to your Japanese friends.

Cases might be up but deaths and hospitalization are not.

Might be due the fact 69% of those over 65 have had their first shot.

Israel data is based on quite small numbers, compared to UK or USA. In addition, Israel contact traces like crazy, so their testing is probably more accurate in real world, but does not necessarily mean you will get more sick or die. It just means you can pass it on, and your PCR test is positive.

Well 1 more year of masks I guess.

You should get property informed. In a test, Covid was found on Kiwi fruit.

But how could they give a PCR test to a Kiwi fruit? Wasn't it asymptomatic? It would not meet the govt threshold to qualify. Therefore, it could not be given a test.

A good friends wife got covid. High fever for days. Finally she was given a PCR test (+) and is now hospitalized. Immediate family, husband, and two kids despite living in the same household maskless were not considered high risk because they did not have any symptoms and were not given PCR tests by the govt, and instead told to fork out 9man yen (3people) a the local hospital if they were concerned. That is how hard it is to get PCR tests here in Japan. Little confidence that they will be able to test at the olympics in the capacity they say they will. The past 18 months has shown Japan has very little testing capability or initiative to test. Remember Koike promising 60,000 tests a day? I do, gold chain and all.

https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2020/10/30/national/science-health/coronavirus-testing-tokyo/

the most ever PCR done in Tokyo in one day was 17k.

Hold on for a second, we've donated vaccines to several countries. So what's the excuse for "it will be unable to distribute doses quickly enough"?

We gave the several countries the 2nd tier vaccines, because in political jargon, it means these are not good enough for us, but if you want them for free, and cover the shipping we will send them to you.

Glad to see my political science minor pays off after all of these years.

didou

That shows the AstraZeneca does not prevent infection

None of them PREVENT infection with 100% efficacy.

Astrazeneca was around 70% efficacy, so 2~3 out of 11 is probably right. The other passengers on the plane, might wanna follow up with those people as well.

The whole hype of the "bubble safety" of the olympic village is a joke. Especially when you have all these athletes training all over Japan, sure the local communities feel lots of anxiety, confusion, and anger over all of this. The other 80,000 support staff will be going all over tokyo, eating out, partying.

You have CNN saying the athletes will come 5 days before their event, and leave 2 days after their event. But then you have some teams coming a month or more before, staying in the country side at some 4800 yen a night business hotels, being told to stay in their rooms. The ugandans arrive in Narita and after going through the PCR tests, and one person testing postive are put on a bus for 7.5 hours to Osaka. What einstein came up with that in the plan for omotenashi olympics.

Posted in: Japan starts vaccinating people aged 18 or older at large-scale centers See in context

Why not small scale centers?

Lots of doctors sitting around in their clinics that could be part of the vaccination effort.

My district in Tokyo has over 170 small clinic locations giving out jabs. Most wards in Tokyo have some number of local clinics giving out jabs. Check your local city homepage, the info will be there, not on Japantoday.

Posted in: Japan starts vaccinating people aged 18 or older at large-scale centers See in context

How is a 21 year old in Tokyo able to get a shot?

If their university or workplace is giving them out, they do not require a voucher from what I have seen. Or if their local ward has sent the vouchers, they may be able to get a vaccine from a group or individual location. It all depends on the ward. Even yesterday, the govt said, they would reward those municipalities who were efficient at getting the jabs into arms. And those that were slow would not get new vaccine until they are out in an effort to avoid waste.

If you need to get a voucher first, are students getting priority before others under 65?

If they have a voucher, yes they are priority before those without a voucher. However, with a voucher under 65 is basically a free for all.

This roll out is such a mess.

True that.

Posted in: Japan eyes vaccinating people under 65 at state-run mass centers from Thursday See in context

So did anyone else notice that it states "The slots from July 28 onward are mostly filled by elderly people for their second-round shots." ?

These large vaccine centers give the Moderna shot, which is a 4 week interval in Japan. This would not make sense, as they have not given the first shot even yet. The July 28th date is most likely a type for June 28th. As the article states the slots are open until June 27th.

I know many in Sumida-ku, most under 65 ( 40~60) none have yet gotten their voucher.

I know three people age over 40 who live in Sumida-ku and two have made reservations, the third will soon.

My voucher should arrive this week, and I will try my luck at the large site. Worst case is I can get it in middle July according to my local ward.

If you want to look into booking, do not take Japantoday for the final word. Please check the govt health agency sites, they are responsible for booking, not Japantoday, not Kyodo, and pretty sure not SORANEWS. as much as Japantoday is a great news source, they are not the health department.

For the large vaccination sites in tokyo, the page is: https://www.fukushihoken.metro.tokyo.lg.jp/iryo/kansen/coronavaccine/daikibo.html

as of today, you still need a vaccine ticket to book a reservation.

Your local city, district, ward, mura, homepage has the most recent vaccine info. Check there for the local rules, timelines and rollout.
