An apology is not a news story - reporting on it only gives the apology unwarranted weight.

Elections should not be called by those in power - there's a basic safety in balance. The world is crazy, I say.

Posted in: Gov't - but not Ishihara - backs away from Hashimoto's comfort women comments See in context

The core point here is about accepting responsibility. Just because things exist, and other countries do them, and there was a war going on - this doesn't eliminate responsibility.

Beware the politician who continually tries to dodge owning up to actions.

...within 10 years.

Whoa...slow down there. Don't do anything drastic with bringing these human tape-recorders into the classroom. Maybe a 50 year plan would be less disruptive and less shocking for students and staff.

When my 2 year-old grabs a toy, doesn't let go and says 'mine'...I try to teach him about sharing and playing nice with others.

Yeah but you got the easy part, you don't have to try and teach a billion of so children about playing nice now do you?

If their parents did the same, adults on both sides might be able to solve this dispute without making themselves look like children.

Regardless of how it turns out, checks and balances on any of Hashimoto's methods are important. He's a guy that defines himself as 'pushing limits and showing strength', thus those limits need to be clearly defined.

He had no driver's license and they were joyriding - it makes no difference if he was sleeping or not.

5-8 years for killing 3 people in this situation isn't enough. This is embarrassing and sad.

I swear The Hash just looks for opportunities where he can voice an extreme opinion, so his followers will feel "he's a strong leader who's not afraid to say what he thinks".

Besides that, however, I hope he does eventually back-up his statements here. I'd like to seem some change seriously implemented. A zero tolerance stance might be needed for a while.

Posted in: Abe accuses China of letting Japanese firms be targeted during isle protests See in context

This is an important & valid point by Abe. However, I'm not sure China will appreciate being called-out like this...maybe it would be better to raise such an issue behind closed doors.

Abe already won the election, no need to keep up the rhetoric so high.

Posted in: Student commits suicide after being beaten by school basketball coach See in context

Go to any mall restaurant 10 minutes before opening, and you see the same mentality: some manager ripping into their employees with a 'pep-talk', talking down to them about the same things they've been talking down to them everyday since they started working there...because they feel it's motivating and good for them.

Bullying is very embedded in this culture....I think it would be difficult to simply erase. Japan needs to take on the related suicide problem dealing with the current atmosphere, working towards enabling kids to cope and grow from experience, for now, rather than just hoping the bullying will go away. It won't anytime soon. It'll be a generational change.

They need to focus on teaching kids how to communicate. This is the first step, I think, then change will come from this.

Anyone for nuclear power in Japan, an earthquake prone country, is using only one measuring stick: money.

..and that's a poor, unbalanced way to live.

Posted in: Abe to review Fukushima crisis before deciding on restarting reactors See in context

A lot of people nailed it here. Why would this even be news if it wasn't setting up a "Well, we reviewed the findings, so it's ok to start them..."

The headline should read "Abe to do what his job dictates he do, before making a major decision".

Posted in: Abe, Obama discuss importance of alliance See in context

Sarrano - do you ever think this guy should be held to a little higher standard than people like me or smithinjapan or any other clown on the street? He was just given a second chance that he didn't deserve, and he was given that chance by a huge margin. He should be a bit more meticulous.

Your comment about his disease isn't valid, either. This is a major factor in his ability to do his job...not because of the limits of the disease, but because he quit from it once before.

Keep making excuses for him, like the voters did, and watch him act with entitlement.
