Posted in: Abe, Obama discuss importance of alliance See in context

In a humorous moment, Abe got his U.S. leaders mixed up, when he told business chiefs he had been speaking to “President Bush.”

Yeah, hilarious. Abe's stuck on autopilot.

All these right-wing guys are living in a cold-war world, when what Japan needs is to embrace a global world.

Posted in: Election result is 'harsh verdict' on DPJ: media See in context

Exactly. Voters didn't like Abe and his crew before, so they voted for change. The new ruling party was given about 3 years to deal with a depression, earthquake, tsunami, nuclear blow-up, and out-of-place-agitators such as Ishihara provoking China. Now voters are unhappy and want what caused all the political problems from before. I dont get it..

Congrats Japan! No complaining when conscription and war rolls around...you bought this BS.

Term minimums are what's needed most - especially to curb wasted time from bickering about 'the PM should resign', which will probably start by spring.

Posted in: Shinzo Abe: Comeback kid with conservative agenda See in context

come back-kid? geeze

Imagine any other country in the world where a leader quits because the stress of the job cause health problems. Even if they attempted a 'come back', people would have none of that.

Foreign opinion of Japan is going to sink even more sharply after he gets elected.

Three months means he has more time for drinking from around noon.

I wonder if he gets paid during these three months? I doubt it....but....

What a sad story. Sometimes I'm so scared about being a father...I can't imagine a worse situation for him to be in right now.

Hashimoto should be forced to investigate and then declare how many of his twitter followers have tattoos...then disown them as supporters.

Whenever I meet a Ren, I always think of that movie "Makin' the Grade" with Judd Nelson.

Every second kid I meet seems to be named Yui these days.

Words lead to logic and reason, not good for nationalistic knee-jerk politics like these.

Posted in: Ishihara-Hashimoto party seeks bigger defense spending See in context

Increase defense spending, yet shrink the role of central government? I don't get it.

Is this just doublespeak for shifting money from education and health care to the military?

Btw, that photo is so cute <3 luvluv

Disillusioned - it's a valid concern. I don't think it's the case. In the past, schools were strongly discouraged from reporting bullying. The were indifferent to actual presence of it, however.

Abe should have rolled with it, as he probably gained a few votes from the train-groping voter demographic. I hear that's quite a populated group, actually.

Posted in: Osaka to reintroduce Saturday classes for elementary schools See in context

This is the type of crap that makes Hashimoto popular with his fan club. It has nothing to do with what is better for students or teachers or education or schools...it's simply for the old-school, easily impressionable voter to think to them self "Yeah, this guy's right-on. He's a leader, doing whats tough, but needed for Japan. We need to work harder, and this guy knows that. Young kids are lazy, they should be more like I was when I was young....blah blah blah".

This has nothing to do with education, and everything to do with winning votes. Guy is a scumbag.

Posted in: Ishihara, Hashimoto announce 'third force' in Japanese politics See in context

I'm sure half of the negotiation time was spent arguing who's name would appear first on the press release.

"The country is going to fall apart if we don't act now!" <------ self-important a-holes.

Well, if he doesn't work out he can always try again a few months later at the next election.

I heard that to get elected gov of Tokyo, you have to be considered insane by the public.

The bar has been set pretty high. One of these guys is going to have to mud-sumo a wild boar dressed as a samurai, or something.

One of the sad things is that I often meet find foreign business owners here defending this practice, because they can easily get Japanese staff to work for free. You get the feeling that if slavery weren't illegal, a lot of ppl would own some.
