It is very unfortunate, but big business totally rules the roost here, and they often achieve their aims by having the politicians in their pockets - corruption is rife. No matter the protests, the development will go ahead and more concrete will be poured, more parking lots will go up, and more nature and trees will be destroyed to the detriment of all who live nearby and all the rest of us in this choking city. There was much protest a short few years ago over the development of Nakano's Heiwanomori Koen. Nobody wanted it, except businesses and the politicians, so it went through despite the vociferous protests. There should be a far more accountable system in place over these things, but Japan is a million miles away from such things.

Very shocking and sad. My heart goes out to the victim. The assailant is insane and it is a failing that this wasn’t picked up before it came to this happened.

An absolutely stupid waste of money. All this tub thumping nationalism should have been long consigned to the history books. We need to urgently work on what brings us together as humans not separate ourselves off from each other. We are all humans on this one precious planet. Building schools, hospitals and providing for everyone is a much better goal than making bombs and bullets to kill people with.

Fabulous news for this vastly overpopulated and precious planet. We could do with a huge decline in the human population, and we need to live simpler more fulfilling lives than the failed all-out consumerist model of supposed infinite economic growth on a finite sized planet.

He's and out-of-touch old dinosaur. He should be made to resign after his outrageous and unacceptable statements. The IOC didn't have the guts to make a stand, which they should have done. Saying the matter was closed is weak and sends absolutely the wrong message. Perhaps they have forgotten their mission, which states, "The goal of the Olympic Movement is to contribute to building a peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport practiced without discrimination of any kind and in the Olympic spirit, which requires mutual understanding with a spirit of friendship, solidarity and fair play." Or they could drop the "... without discrimination... " part.

Geez! What else could this Abe led government come up with to show their total incompetence? Rhetorical question. It is a real pity that such a lot of Japanese people don't bother voting. This current shower in power should be firmly kicked into the long grass preferably never to be seen again! They couldn't organise themselves out of a brown paper bag even if they had typed, easy-to-follow instructions. Their handling of the whole coronavirus crisis has been a total fiasco from beginning to end.

The massive flurry of opinion is burying the main issue. It is abhorrent for any person in a position of power to abuse that power over someone else. Mechanisms must be in place to stop this kind of behaviour.
