The planet has "such a limited amount of time and there's such a massive scale that needs to happen so quickly," said DiCaprio. "And if we don't do something, we know the outcome. We know the outcome."

He’s right. There is only eight years left according to the UN before it’s is impossible to stop the planet from cooking.

Meanwhile China is claiming they will reach peak CO2 emissions the same year as the deadline- 2030.

https://apnews.com/article/europe-business-china-environment-and-nature-climate-change-7e29d68ea8a77ee8ebbe1460f0f09ffd

So the outcome will be? The exact same outcome as when the last two deadlines past. In the meantime DeCaprio will continue to live an extravagant lifestyle and virtue signal himself to sleep every night.

Peter Neil:

Yes, like John Hancock, a great American. OK, well, actually a smuggler, but let's not talk about that.

Haven’t heard that one but no one is perfect. He certainly has redeemed any shortcomings he may have had with his contributions to the eradication of the British monarchy’s colonial rule.

Most people have no true understanding of the "founders." They were, almost to man, atheists (which is not a bad thing).

That is a common talking point for those who are in opposition to the overthrow of British control of the North American colonies. Most if not all of the Founders were practicing Christians but several were Diest. Diest’s believed in a God as the creator - that once the job of creation was done, the world ran of its own accord by the the laws of nature God created.

Those "proud people" founders believed only-land owning white men should have the right to vote.

And everywhere else in the world, there was no form of democracy at all. At worst the Americans first attempts at democracy were a step in the right direction. Meanwhile in Africa no one enjoyed any form of democracy and the black kings on the West coast went inland to capture and enslave people of other tribes and sell them to European merchants for profit. Slavery still exists in Africa to this day.

If you use the logic above, it should be called "Thievery Valley" or "Liars Valley" after the people who stole land

By your logic, every place on every continent should be named in similar fashion because no people have clean hands. American Indians fought each other, tribe against tribe, taking territory. There are also many historically documented instances in which American Indians themselves purchased black slaves. Open your mind to reality. History isn’t as neat and tidy as many choose to believe.

It just may be that the quality of science may not be as good as it once was.

Posted in: Interior secretary seeks to rid U.S. of derogatory place names See in context

All of these places named after American Indians should be done away with so as to be respectful of these proud people. The names can be changed to the names of famous first Americans like those proud people that signed the Declaration of Independence or the US Constitution. Squaw Valley could have been renamed Franklin Valley after Benjamin Franklin so as to more respectfully honor the people that were native to the land prior to and during the transition to the new nation that would become known as the United States of America.

It’s sad that American Indians do not want to see their old language used anymore in place names. Hopefully they can unite with the rest of America under new names after great Americans from the shared history of all.

You got to wonder why this is happening in a country like Germany where the people are mostly compliant with the government’s dictates. You have to wonder if the German are following the science. The evidence seems to indicate that they are not or they would have the virus under control.

@mobius217:

I'm pretty sure the biggest reason for this is the increased visibility of female engineers as role models in the industry that is being perceived by prospective girls studying science in high school. That has definitely paid off.

I’m pretty sure that the reason is because there is a huge push to increase females in STEM at universities. I have a relative in a university right now in an engineering major. She was offered scholarships and other incentives. She is smart and enjoys her major. Her classmates are still overwhelmingly male despite the conscious effort to discriminate in favor of females in admissions. Females dominant college admissions overall and in non-STEM majors.

Posted in: Japanese CEOs boldly going where no women have gone before See in context

This is common in most countries. Thousands of women get dissuaded from studying math and science in grade school. It's not the feminist education programs fault. It is the male misogynist education system that is denying women from pursuing their desired choices.

No, girls are not dissuaded from studying math and science growing up. Plenty of them do. Girls are more likely to excel in school than males.

It’s just that fewer females on average are interested in things as opposed to relationships. It’s that simple. There are of course plenty of exceptions but the general rule consistently holds true. Even in rigidly egalitarian nations such as in Scandinavia, females choose not to be in engineering and other science based professions in higher percentages than males. It’s just a fact. It likely has more to do with Darwinism and brain chemistry than the specter of evil misogynists.

Now women dominate professions in the West that were once all male. Teachers are disproportionately female. In the West, males make up a minority of college admissions. Men are also way more likely to be imprisoned than females - does that prove misandry is also running rampant? I think not. There are differences between men and women despite what the Left tells you.

I couldn’t agree more. Why would anyone want to live in that hell hole of a city? A woman was raped in Central Park in broad daylight just a few days ago - and such crimes are common. I hope they wise up and move upstate or to New Jersey before something terrible happens.

Wow I am so glad he did not compete in the Tokyo Olympics. The act of kneeling during the playing of your own countries (or a competitors) National Anthem is divisive in the extreme and is itself an act of bigotry that should not be tolerated. The point of the Olympics is to foster goodwill among nations and settle our differences via sport. Promoting racial strife does against the Olympics.

Otani is a terrific talent, but the Japanese media (and Otani) would be wise to lay off the hype machine in overdrive again.

Given the fact that only two individuals have ever been as similarly competitive in both hitting and pitching the comparisons are apt. Ohtani isn’t yet a 20 game winner in a season and hasn’t set any league home run records like Ruth but is talented enough to be capable of both. Only time will tell what his place in baseball history will be but he is the only player in 100 years that has demonstrated talents commensurate to Ruth’s.

China is the end result of far left socialist ideologies. Thank your lucky stars your live in a strong conservative country like Japan.

Couldn’t have said it any better. Leftist ideologies are horrendous because they require conformity. Well, humans are not conformist by nature. Therefore repression is required to maintain control. If people have the freedom to choose, many will go against the regimes dictates. It’s the fatal flaw of socialism.

Socialism is fine as long as it’s not enforced by the power of the state. Another word for this is charity.

Also how politicians in countries like the US can stop being so easily swayed by lobbyists from big oil gas countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE and by lobbyists from big oil and gas corporations in the US.

Yeah - politicians like Joe biden who just a few weeks ago begged the Saudi’s to pump more oil after clamping down on fossil fuel production in the US. He must believe that oil extracted in Saudi Arabia emits less CO2 than natural gas produced in the US. The man has never been confused with having a keen intellect.

BigYen

Better talking than not talking, better a pact than no pact. If it all comes to nothing, OK, but you can’t have the world’s two biggest economies pulling in different directions on this.

You are wrong. Talking and making agreements do not necessarily mean progress when the goal of your negotiating partner is different from your own. To believe otherwise is naive and delusional. Iran, North Korea, and China do not have the same goals as Western countries. You will never force them to believe otherwise.

Because they don't really plan to do anything, and that's because deep down they don't really believe the so called science and don't want to commit trillions of dollars and don't want to wreck thier countries.

That’s odd because they sure seem to be gung ho about wrecking their own economies. China will not of course- they will play along just enough to encourage the West to commit economic suicide then just keep extending the date for their own measures to be put into effect. biden and the naive Europeans will play right along with the game thinking they are actually doing something all the while being played for fools.

It’s telling that Baldwin is pointing the finger elsewhere for his failure to handle a real gun responsibly. This wasn’t a prop - it was decided to have working guns on set and people were firing them for target practice. Everyone who believes in civil rights will tell you that misuse of those rights has consequences. Alec Baldwin committed a crime through negligence.

Its sad to see the Left politicize this case and make excuses for the shooting death of an innocent person due to their support for Baldwins politics. The wagons are being circled around their own over what would otherwise be condemnation for someone else less important to their cause.

zichi: In some countries, like the UK renewable energy is providing more power than nuclear energy.

Checked out the site and that led me to look into what the Uk is doing with wind. I am impressed by the wind farms - looks like most are just offshore where the wind will likely be more consistent. Of course it is a blight on the landscape and kills some birds, but turbines don’t likely need much by way of rare earth metals and isn’t polluting. Solar is much more of a problem because of the toxins, lifespan, and cost of recycling and resulting pollutants. Biomass so far doesn’t scale. They have a good amount of nuclear and fossil fuels are still the leading source of energy.

Posted in: Climate crisis could give nuclear energy a second wind See in context

Solar and wind plants need far fewer workers and far less maintenance than nuclear plants. They do not need external power to operate.

Wind and solar need fewer workers and also produce far less energy and is unreliable. I am curious to to know if there is a like comparison that can be made - such as number of workers per kilowatt hour. As for external power, a nuclear plant can supply its own power when it is operational - which it can be for 50 years and longer.

Posted in: Good COP, bad COP: U.N. climate meet praised and panned See in context

Fitting that arch climate hypocrite Kerry is the pic that accompanies this article.

Given that Al Gore has of late disappeared with his hundreds of millions in global warming profits, John Kerry does make for an appropriate heir to the hot air throne. There is hardly a more worthy hypocrite. He doesn’t even go through the motions of pretending that he will make a sacrifice- he simply flies around the globe in his private jet paid for by his wife’s inherited wealth and intones dramatically about the horrible things other people are doing that will soon destroy life on Earth as we know it. Then he flies back to one of his many estates, say the one at the beach, and laments the ignorance of those little people who cannot be forced to know what’s good for them.

This global confab will not achieve its stated goals because they all know it isn’t possible to get rid of CO2 emissions in the eight years left until it’s too late. Kerry certainly hasn’t kicked the habit. Kerry and his ilk just want control over the masses. It is an impossibility for an average person to generate a carbon footprint in their entire lifetime of the size that Kerry spews in a single year. Until the Warmist’s come up with new leadership that actually practice what they preach it’s going to be difficult to convince anymore drones to join the cult.
