I'm not a fan of musicals, but I enjoyed La La Land very much.

diplomatic immunity

You have to say this like the guy in Lethal Weapon 2.

Posted in: Winter Games bosses look to remove APA books, porn from TV in its hotel rooms See in context

Japan has THE best system to purchase in-room porn at hotels. No "accidental" purchases, or awkward moments when you check out.

Hopefully, when this pervert gets out of his lengthy prison stay, he won't be employed in another position that gives him access to this type of sensitive information.

Regardless of this teacher's punishment, I hope these kids learned a lesson about being bullied.

Posted in: American man arrested for smuggling marijuana in candy See in context

By the way, is it just a coincidence that everybody I seei in our nearby San Francisco marijuana dispensary, (yes a big wall of glass windows to it) looks about 25 years old? You'd think the old folks would be the one's needing it.

Could be some of the misconceptions older people in the US still have about marijuana? I've walked around Kitsilano beach in Vancouver, and saw middle aged people smoking joints like they're regualr tobacco. I bet the older demographic will grow as it becomes legal and more common in the US.

Posted in: Man arrested over murder of acquaintance on mountain road See in context

Yeah it's not like anyone would ever have a knife in the mountains for any other reason. Entirely unthinkable.

Yeah, I'm sure they met up there to go for a hike or something. Yamaguchi probably brought oranges for a snack, and Kohara probably said something annoying like "how are we going to peel those?!".

Posted in: Man arrested over murder of acquaintance on mountain road See in context

Police said Yamaguchi has admitted to stabbing Kohara, whom he knew. He was quoted as saying he and Kohara got into an argument.

They got into an argument, and he just happened to have a knife? Looks premeditated.

I never use my phone while I'm in the bathroom. It's gross, and I have nothing urgent on the go, as having just to go.

Posted in: Family sues Saitama Prefecture after daughter dies during school walkathon See in context

@Disillusioned - I agree with you that the AED may have been ineffective, but I'm a little curious why school officials waited 20 minutes for the device. If the situation was dire enough where an AED was deemed necessary, then surely an ambulance should have been called, as well. That's where I see the school's actions as lacking.

Posted in: Taxi fares in Tokyo to start at Y430 from Jan 30 See in context

The new fare system might be worth it if you don't want to walk from the train station to your final destination, like when it's raining. That's about the only time I use a cab in Tokyo.

Posted in: 14-year-old boy arrested for attacking stepfather with scissors See in context

The boy’s mother was quoted by police as saying that her son and his stepfather have never gotten along, but she did not know what brought about her son’s attack.

She has no idea? Something tells me she's willfully ignorant.

Posted in: Fight night See in context

I can understand people’s aversion to violence. I hated the sport in its early days when there were no weight classes, and things like eye-gouging and kicks to the groin were legal. Now there are weight divisions, and the competitors at the highest level are highly trained martial arts black belts, Olympians (wrestling and judo) and boxers. Saying mixed marital arts is not a sport or saying it looks like rape, is just ignorant.

Competition couldn't be more simple than 2 individuals going as it to see who's best. I love this sport.

Posted in: Body of newborn baby girl left on grounds of Gifu shrine See in context

I don't think anyone here knows how or why the baby died yet. If it was stillborn then leaving a baby at a shrine (house of gods) doesn't sound so barbaric. If it were killed by the parent then yes, absolutely awful.

Not delivering the baby in a hospital raises red-flags for me. Unless the mother couldn't physically get to a hospital, then it looks like she was trying to hide the pregnancy. The final act would be to dispose of the baby.

Posted in: Like father, like son: Another Rosberg wins F1 title See in context

I can't stand Lewis as a person, but as a racer and a competitor, he has my respect. I can't fault him for his tactics today. He can be satisfied that he did everything within his power to win the title, but it didn't go his way. Like Senna and Schumacher, Hamilton is one of those racers that will do anything to win, an admirable quality, if not a likable one.

Posted in: As Duterte embraces China, Abe set to roll out warm welcome See in context

You may not like the man, or what he says or does, but you'll have to admit he has the guts to stand up to the big brother and fight for what he perceives as is in the best interest of his country.

Stand up to big brother? Hardly. More like drop to his knees for China, while he waits for Russia to join in. The US state department hasn't received any word from the Philippines about severing ties. I have no problem with Duterte wanting to find a better position for his country, but the way he did it, just seems to lack any self-respect. And if you think they're just killing drug users and traffickers, you're kidding yourself. You can basically kill anyone and say you suspected them of dealing with drugs, and that's supposed to be OK. It's beyond shady.
