Geez along with another 120 deaths caused by Tropical Storm Tembi, a very very sad end to the year.

The NHK guys can't speak a word.

They can where I live unfortunately.

So did you have advance notice he was coming, or do you normally sit around in your underwear?

My husband does, I just thought that was a man thing.

Posted in: Student to be referred to prosecutors over fatal bicycle crash See in context

I have to ride 25 minutes to the station and its something of an ordeal just about every damn day. People are using their phones, riding against the traffic, flying out of side streets without looking, trying to squeeze past cars in narrow streets, I couldn't tell you what the view is like because I spend most of my time watching out for idiotic behaviour. If you are elderly or a small child I can understand, but they're not. Why don't people have any awareness of road safety when riding bikes here!?

Roast your own chicken and stay clear of the foul butter cream cakes and things aren't too bad.

I need sunglasses, my eyes are green and can't handle the glare.

I made a Namahage mask and outfit for halloween two years ago, and won best costume! The Namahage Sedo festival in February is great, we had a fun weekend.

@motoyen completely agree regarding meds. I get stuff sent from home, but they're no match for the evil sugi.

Posted in: The five things I love & hate about living in Tokyo See in context

Living in Tokyo doesn't necessarily mean downtown, out in the burbs its just like living in any other city. For me the worst part about living in Japan is the foul pollen season, absolutely despise it.

I didn't change my name, it would've meant changing my passport, drivers license, credit card, gaijin card, bank account, remittance account and pension plan. I work so taking time off to do those things would be a major pain. Also I imagine I would've needed to let my phone and internet provider know of the name change. Changing your name IS a big deal.

Posted in: Foreigners' perspective on election barely discussed despite growing presence See in context

We had My Number forced onto us and have to pay taxes like everybody else, yet we cannot vote in local elections. The government picks and chooses what it likes, but not necessarily what is right.

Ugh monster neighbours. Used to live next door to a nutter who would smack our windows with her slippers whenever things didn't please her. She mostly complained about the sound of the vacuum cleaner, and the beeping of the washing machine and microwave. We moved.

Posted in: 3-year-old girl dies of E. coli infection See in context

I wouldn't be surprised if it was due to contamination caused by unwashed hands. I see women walk out of cubicles in public restrooms and do their make up and preen themselves in the mirror BEFORE washing their hands. And if they do wash their hands, its often just a quick sprinkle without soap, followed by some more preening.

These two should be registered as sex offenders and banned from teaching for life. A mere six month suspension is utterly ridiculous.

8000 yen, no aircon during the day. Like @Disillusioned I also have a long summer break and am at home, but I don't see the point of having aircon on during the day when I'm in and out of the house all the time. For the elderly its definitely a must though!

Thank you for your concern @nandakandamanda!

I didn't see it so I don't know how big it was, but the pain was excruciating. Within 5 minutes I had a headache and nausea, and it was actually getting difficult to breathe. We drove to the nearest hospital and they ran some tests - centipede bite. They put me on a drip, and now I have to take antibiotics and antihistamines for a few days. Nast, nasty creature. Take care in your house!

Akie used Japanese female custom. When they dislike a man they ignore him.

I imagine that this is not something particular to just Japanese women.
