Wow, love the closed-mindedness of all people saying "breaking isn't a sport". And "Olympics are not what they were". Yawn indeed. Wanting to keep their own little private garden when the world evolves... Don't worry, it was Paris-only and you "woke"-hating (whatever that "woke" word might mean, I guess it is "I hate change") people will be able to go back to your "manly-men" sports like basebball (megaYAWN) next Olympics.
Because let's face it: if breaking doesn't have its place as a olympic sport, then gymnastics, trampoline, synchronized swimming, all ice-skating that is not speed skating, in short, every "sport" that has a judge and notation system shouldn't be considered as a sport.
We could even go back to the real "good ol' times", when women were banned from the sports and the athletes had to compete naked to bbe sure no woman had sneaking her way in.

Posted in: What is Japan's 'megaquake' warning? See in context
I'm scared as hell by the Nankai Trough earthquake. Even if I was living in Osaka at the time of the Tohoku megaquake, it gave me some kind of PTSD because at the time I was scared by the length of the swaying of our mansion (15 stories, we lived on the 2nd), but more than that, because at that time I was unemployed and my wife went to work as usual and I stayed home watching the tsunami come live. So far, worst mistake of my life and since 2011, I feel like the ground is constatly shaking while I'm in Japan (which doesn't happen when I go back to my homecountry for vacations).
But despite that, yes, if a megaquake happens, I prefer to be in Japan when it happens, because when you look at it clearly, most of the damages caused by the 2011 event were because of the tsunami and not because of the earthquake. Even this 7.1 event in Kyushu, I'm hearing about no loss of life and no major destruction, which was not the case for the Noto peninsula in january, mainly because Noto peninsula is mostly old traditional houses.

Posted in: Wages in Japan log 1st rise in 27 months on higher summer bonuses See in context
In 14 years working where I'm working, my salary (I'm an employee on contract - aka a Kleenex) never got a raise. So when VAT went from 3 to 5 to finally 8/10%, the only thing I can say is that I actually get paid less now than 14 years earlier. So, when I'm hearing the "winter" or "summer" bonuses on the rise or even UNIQLO giving 40% more salary to all its employees, regardless of their status in the company, I wish my company would just adjust my salary to the inflation...

Posted in: A 'painful' car See in context
Very strange non-article. No writer's name, no real explanation :
1 - I've always heard that "itasha" was the nickname for "italian car" (itarian sha, like Ferrari or Lamborghini), like amesha is the nickname for "american car" (ame sha, like Ford, Dodge or GMC)
2 - In what aspect this kind of car is "painful to look at"?? Apart from a taste point of view, which is personal and certainly not a generality. The only "painful cars" I can think of are those making way more noise than what is permitted and are never stopped by the police for this problem. Which is not surprising, since japanese cities are real "painfully noisy territories"...

Jforce: you might be a tad naive to thinks that anybody will want to do Uber in rural areas, since the real money is to be made in big cities, where there's a lot of people living.
David Brent: funnily in Osaka I never had any problem with taxis. They've always been efficient and polite. Yes they are expensive, but I believe in paying the right price for a service, not a slave wage

Every single reaction I read here is about money and taxpayer this and taxpayer that.
Honestly, I prefer my taxes (yes I pay my taxes in Japan) to be "wasted" on that than to be wasted on Kishida and the likes, or on acquiring F35 jets.
