@gokai_wo_maneku

Japanese press reports that every day the father shouted "Die!!!!!" to the kid.

@Adrian Beard

Flame me all you like, but I'lll bet that this Father loved his son.

I seriously doubt this person loved his son. It's too bad someone didn't do something about the man during the past four years when he was abusing his son. No grandparent/aunt/uncle noticed? No teacher noticed? No neighbor noticed? No friend's parent noticed? It might have only taken one person to step up and report him. I don't know the mother's situation, so I can't comment on her actions, but surely during the past four years, someone noticed something. Can anonymous reports be made in Japan? He sounds like a very violent man, so maybe people were afraid to report or confront him, but that's what the police are for, surely.

So lucky they caught this guy. From the description of his room, he was well on his way. The alert mom and neighbor who contacted police nipped something quite nasty in the bud. Glad the little girl was found so quickly and hope she'll get the help she needs. Be aware and speak up!

"Being of mixed race was once looked down upon," said sociologist Takashi Miyajima. "Now foreign entertainers are admired in Japan as something untouchable. You could even say they benefit from positive discrimination."

How about just being thought of as a fellow human being, is that too much to ask? When that happens, Japan will truly have come a long way. It's too bad that it seems it has to be either of those two ignorant extremes.

Posted in: Body found in Kumamoto believed to be that of missing girl See in context

@serendipitous @Kittychosen

"We don't know exactly what the murderer said."

"And none of us know what he did until he tells us."

Police found the body after a man, already under arrest for sexual assault, told police he killed the girl and dumped her body on the mountain, Sankei Shimbun reported.

Seems like we know what he said and did because the reporter told us, didn't he?

Besides, what's flowery or inaccurate about writing, "left her body on the mountain", or "took her body to the mountain and left it there"? You have to actually be reminded that he's an animal?

Posted in: Body found in Kumamoto believed to be that of missing girl See in context

I hate the use of the expression "dumped the body" in these kinds of reports. It's bad enough what happened to the victim without making it sound like they were disposed of like garbage. The murderers show no mercy, but maybe journalists could show a little more compassion for the victim, family, and friends, and not use those particular words. There are other less disrespectful choices; it shouldn't be necessary to exactly quote the words of the murderer.

As the American "climate change is a hoax" line...

Why American? I believe many Americans support the science behind climate change.

We certainly are seeing more and more unusual weather. Time will tell if it is climate change, but I believe it is. Unfortunately, many scientists think there isn't much we can do to reverse it or stop it at this stage. All we can do is prepare and try to adapt.

Her family and friends must be heartbroken again. Clearly premeditated because of the stalking prior to the attack, and he tried to escape to his relatives. Should be life in prison. 16 years is not a serious sentence for this crime. It's an insult to the victim and her family, added to the tragedy of the police not doing their job in the first place when she came to them for help.

Posted in: 10-year-old boy drowns in Shiga pond See in context

I don't know why this tragedy has to be blamed on anyone. The children were old enough to know what they were doing was "wrong" - going through a hole in a fenced off area to get to the pond. The fact that they could get though the fence easily makes me think they probably weren't the first kids to see it and crawl through it. On any other day, with any other kids, maybe nothing bad would have happened, but this day, the boy lost his balance and fell in. He shouldn't have been there, but it was an accident. His parents, sister and friend must be heartbroken and blame themselves, but it's not their fault.

Posted in: 78-year-old woman dies after X-ray at hospital See in context

This kind of tragic thing happens everywhere, unfortunately. I've been back and forth to doctors and hospitals quite a bit with my 87-year-old mom (in the U.S.), and there have been several times that potentially life-threating mistakes have been made. A few examples:

*Drug allergies not listed correctly on the medical record.

*Sent home from hospital with I.V. needle and short tube still in her arm.

*Wrong medical record sent from doctor's office to hospital. (It was for a different patient.)

*Wrong drug treatment for suspected stroke almost given in the ER. (On follow up, her regular neurologist said it could have caused a massive stroke.)

All these happened at a well-known, well-respected hospital. It's very lucky that my mom was able to communicate with the doctors and nurses, or that I was there, in order to stop these mistakes from progressing too far. But, if she'd been unconscious or had had no patient advocate present, it could have ended very differently. Doctors/nurses are too busy, standard procedures are not followed, no one listens, careless mistakes by untrained staff - lots of areas need lots of improvement.

There is something deeply, deeply wrong with a society in which this kind of mass attack keeps happening. The challenge is to find out what that is and try to fix it. I know my parents' generation didn't have these kinds of events. I know the answer is complex, and there is not just one thing we can point to and say, "That's it. That's why these things keep happening," but I sure wish there were. It makes me feel sad, sick and a bit hopeless.

Is "more than a quarter" really a lot? I wonder why more didn't sign.

While this is good news perhaps, I wish they were doing more to develop new antibiotics. It seems to me that drug-resistant bacteria will be a bigger threat in the future than high cholesterol, which, for many people, can already be controlled through a better diet and exercise.

Some Japanese media reports have said Megumi Yokota has become close to North Korea's ruling family and may know its secrets, one reason preventing the regime from letting her go.

The dictator had his own uncle killed recently. If Megumi Yokota knew any secrets, I doubt that he would hesitate for a moment to have her killed.

My heart goes out to her family and all the other families of the abducted. What they have gone through for the past 30-plus years is beyond tragic.

If you look at earlier photos of her she actually looks pretty normal, but now it looks like she's got an eating disorder, among other issues. Started out looking like a teenager, and now looks like she's about 12 years old, and in some photos, about 8 years old. Can't be good for her to get so much recognition and approval for what looks like a psychological problem. Wonder where her parents are?

Too soon and not enough information to judge. Scientists need to be able to fail. We all do. Wasn't it Edison who said when asked about his failures, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." Of course, if it was their intention to mislead for whatever reason, that's another story. But, for now, I'll wait and see.

But, its authors acknowledged, it also had a limitation.

Volunteers' eating habits were recorded in exacting detail at the start of the study but this information was not updated during the ensuing 11 years. So it was unknown if or how they changed their diet over this time.

I would say that is a pretty sever limitation, and would even go so far as to say that their conclusion is completely unsupported by evidence. So, some people ate yogurt at the beginning of the study. So what? Their diets weren't tracked for 11 years after that! Nonsense.
