The survey covered 693 people with moderate or severe COVID-19 symptoms who were admitted to hospitals between September 2020 and July 2021.

Only 693 people are covered and it does not mention what age group these are in. How can I take the result seriously?

There are no cheerleaders in Major League Baseball in the United States

I am no baseball fan but I am curious to know the reason behind this. Then I Google and find many pictures of MLB cheerleaders. The authors need to do a better job.

So banning the wearing of headscarfs on women helps in the fight against extremism. I had no idea that terrorist starts their acts by first wearing headscarfs.

I wonder what is happening with all the K-Mart stores in Australia? They are one of the biggest retailers there. Different owner maybe?

They are not related to the US ones and K-marts in Australia are doing super great in recent years by getting rid of the middle buyers and directly buying products from factories. Its products are of good price and qualities. Many products sells out quickly.

Before the pandemic started the top countries the foreign tourists in Japan from are China, Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Unless these countries have dropped quarantine for returned travelers, which IMO I do not think it is going to happen for some time. Even Japan has scrapped all covid restrictions for tourist. The foreign tourist number will be no way near that high in the past.

Not really. You need to have enough military capability to make invading your country too costly to worth the effort. Nuclear weapons are not something used out of the gate because it kind of ruins the places you intend to capture.

Nuclear weapons are deterrents. It protects you from being attacked in the first place. If Ukraine still has its nuclear weapons I do not think Russia would invade it.

Posted in: Australia accelerates missile upgrade due to growing threats See in context

Well the truth is if you need ICBM capable of carrying multiple nuclear warheads to counter potential threats from Russia and China.

Another fact China is rapidly building its navy fleet. It will soon have 3 aircraft carriers and its fourth one will be much bigger that capacity to carry almost 100 aircrafts and launch fighter jets with bigger payload. China is planning to build 4 of them and some high ranked government officer did once say eventually China will have nuclear powered carriers.

If I have such navy fleet at my disposal, wiIl I be satisfied with just sailing them in the South China sea?

The Pacific ocean is next, mate.

The best solution would be for Japan to become self-sufficient in food and energy and not turning to other suppliers, who will most likely raise prices of their exports to take advantage of Japan’s weak position.

Mate, very true but can it be done.? I do not think there is enough farmland in Japan to sustain its 100 millions plus population. But Japan is an island country so maybe it can try catching all the fish in the sea. And energy. Nuclear is the only way but I think the nuclear fuel the reacter used has to be imported, too.

It is not as simple as it looks. I am not an expert in the politics of the Solomon Islands but according to an article I read some time ago. Apparently there are serious friction between different regions or islands in the Pacific nation. Different political leaders are trying to get more bribe, I mean aids from overseas. That gives the chance China to step in.

And that is the biggest difference between them and the west. The west want to impose their views and morals into other countries, which eventually lead to tension and conflicts.

Really? Then why is the USA not having a fight with countries like Saudi Arabia or other authoritarian countries in the Middle East. As long as you are an ally, the USA does not care if you are the devil or not.

By the way, look at what China is doing to Australia. The CCP got angry because of the way the Australian government is trying to run it's country (I am not going into details cause it is too big). The CCP is no angel itself.

"If people think that the ambitions within the Indo-Pacific are restricted just to Taiwan and there won't be knock-on impacts if we don't provide a deterrent effect and work closely with our colleagues and with our allies, then they don't understand the lessons of history," Dutton said.

We need to spend more money bribing our Pacific island neighbors so they will not fall under the Chinese and let them build a navy base there.

The Chinese has already had weapons capable of threatening many countries around them for a long time. Its Dongfeng missiles.

Therefore, if we need a deterrent that is effective against China, we need to buy or borrow some ICBM nuclear missiles from our allies instead of building a few submarines that may not even be built. Problem solved. But whether they are willing to sell or lend them to us is another matter.

Posted in: Australia to boost defense forces by nearly a third See in context

The CCP is never anything good. But saying they are going to threaten Australia in a military way? Well. In the mean time Australian mining companies are selling tons and tons of iron ore and other commodities to China. I bet none of them are being used to build the aircraft carriers or another other military hardware.

By the way, if you know the incredible track record of Australia's submarine fleet, you will not have a lot of hope in the new nuclear sub.

There are many things these money should go to but it is big federal election time again! ScoMo is just pulling out anything, no matter how outrageous it is, to try to get elected again.

Posted in: U.S.-born skater for China faces online abuse after crashing into wall See in context

Eileen Gu is another American-born athlete (for skiing) who decided to represent China instead of the US in the Olympics, very similar situation to Zhu Yi. Her mother and grandmother who raised her were Chinese-born so she wanted to represent them. She got a LOT of flak from American fans over the whole thing. Especially as she is supremely talented and expected to medal in multiple events.

She just got a gold medal in fact already, it was pretty huge but hasn't been covered here yet.

Eileen Gu is kinda different. Before the Olympic she has already got many commercial endorsements in the US. However, they are nothing compared to those she receives in China. Maybe she really wants to represent the country her mother is from but it is highly likely money is another factor. Now with an Olympic medaI she is one of the most celebrated athletes in China. This means virtually unlimited commercial endorsement and I doubt she is gonna miss USA. By the way if you wants to know how come she gets so many endorsements, just google her picture.

Netizens have said she got picked to be in the Olympic team over others Chinese born skaters because of her father, not her merit.

Anyways she made her bed she has to live with giving up the American passport to live in a communist country. Wish her well.

People loves winners and hates losers. This thing happens in many countries. I am not a fan of ice skating but I kinda remember something similar happened to a famous female Japanese pro ice skater years ago. That incident was even worse because the person who dissed the player was not some online trolls. A little googling and I find these.

Mao Asada criticized after tough short program – and before stellar free skate

Chris Estrada

One night after finishing 16th in the ladies’ short program following a fall on her triple Axel, Vancouver silver medalist Mao Asada has delivered a brilliant response in the free skate – scoring a career-high 142.71.

And one wonders what Yoshiro Mori, the former Japanese Prime Minister and new chairman for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics’ organizing committee, must be thinking at this moment.

Mori criticized Asada after her ill-fated short program yesterday, saying that she had a habit of “always falling at the most critical time” according to the Associated Press.

He also said that Asada’s fall in the inaugural team figure skating competition, in which Japan finished fifth, was at cause for her short program problems: “The psychological damage (Asada) incurred must have remained,” Mori said.

Additionally, Mori had some words about Japan’s American-born ice dancing pair, Chris and Cathy Reed: “Although they are not good enough for the U.S. team in the Olympics, we included these naturalized citizens on the team,” he said.

that’s one difference many might say between Japanese culture and UK culture. In the UK personal expression through music, clothes, transportation etc is deeply ingrained in the national psyche, not the overwhelming urge to always blend it and not stick out.

regarding the article, the French get upset at the drop of a hat often. I was living in France and found an English newspaper in a local store. The shop keeper rolled his eyes at my delight upon finding it.

macron needs to reel in these illegal immigrants. It’s his duty to stop illegal immigrants that are already in his country from threatening the borders of other countries.

Australia? Mate, are you working for ScoMo & Co.? Please tell me more about this authoritarian system? By the way you do know that the premier of the state of Western Australia is facing intense backlash for postponing the opening of its state border to the rest of Australia? Western Australia is the only Australian state still running zero-covid policy. The whole Australia has opened up and we have so many cases that Americans are being told by their government not to travel to Australia. I wonder why the federal government suddenly wants to change its policy.

If Omicon is really the one that ends the pandemic. That is good! I really want to visit Japan again. However, is it mild enough to be spread through the population and the small number of people who need hospitalized does not strained the medical system? Let's say 1 in 10,000 people infected with Omicon needs hospitalized then in a country of 125.8 millions is 12,580. Is the medical system good enough to handle it in a short period of time?

Yes totally realize it when everyone who is missing from our work is vaccinated people who are in hospitals.

The vaccine cannot 100% protect you from hospitalisation. It reduces your chance of hospitalisation if you are unlucky enough to catch the virus. It is like wearing a helmet while riding a bike cannot 100% protect you from having a accident and suffer serious injuries and even die from it but it reduces you chance of this happening.
