This is the result of the US trying to overthrow Assad, who is actually an extremely popular politician in Syria. They managed to turn the whole country against the West.

Zelenskky lost all credibility in my mind after his Easter message to the Pope about this being Hell on Earth. I am surprised he didn't mention that this was the literal Armageddon.

This is pretty rich from a Jewish man who typically don't believe in Satan or the concept of Hell.

Time for Japan to open the borders and get overseas tourism going again.

Last couple of years have shown Japan does need, and the Japanese don't want the large scale tourism to come back.

Not that it would matter much, since most of the tourists, and the ones that spend the most, are from China. They will not be back this year.

So typical that the Japanese sign shows Naka Meguro first then Roppongi (assumption being most Japanese will go home in the suburb), but the foreign language signs are reversed assuming that the foreigner wants to go to party in Roppongi.

Posted in: Pregnant workers in Japan's controversial intern program face abuse See in context

These women must be so desperate for work that they would come to one of the most in-hospital places on Earth for foreign workers.

And this in the face of a growing and desperate need for Japan to get more foreign workers.

Actually, not many do. The quotas set by the Japanese government have never even been close to having been filled.

Posted in: Pregnant workers in Japan's controversial intern program face abuse See in context

In Singapore, female foreign guest workers of reproductive age are regularly subjected to pregnancy tests and if they test positive they will be deported immediately. Maybe Japan should emulate the Singaporean way.

Exactly. It is what it is, but it's not a secret. The foreign domestic workers have such a clause in their contracts.

My friend from Sri Lanka got a scholarship to Tokyo University. During the course of his study, his mentor, a university lecturer told him, if you marry a Japanese woman i will not pass you.

While it's a good tale, I have no idea what it has anything to do with the article in question.

Posted in: Ruling LDP to seek enemy base strike capability See in context

Japan has all the knowledge and necessary materials. Japan long ago mastered the fuel cycle. It just hasn't assembled a nuclear weapon, cough cough, to anyone's knowledge. Japan was on the threshold of nuclear weapons in 1945. I'd wager that if Japan started today they would be far ahead of DPRK in well under five years. Far ahead.

This is all conjuncture. We know NK has assembled and tested bombs. Japan can't even build a regional jet.

Nuclear Weapons !

Maybe they can buy NK technology. Japan certainly doesn't have it.

Posted in: Japan, Russia start salmon, trout fishing talks amid Ukraine crisis See in context

For the sake of the fishermen I hope it can get resolved, but these are the types of things Japan should have considered before falling in with US-led sanctions. Japan is not a particularly self-sufficient country, and they definitely need Russia more than the inverse.

Yeah, it's pretty easy for the US and Western Europe to virtue signal (a.k.a. sanction) Russia with things they don't need, and then carve out for things they do (gas/oil/space station).

The issue with Japan is that they have a much more symbiotic relationship with Russia, relying on various Russian sourced goods.

Roughly $20.00 (US) per day, to live in one of the most expensive countries in the world.

If their housing is covered for, I think it's sufficient as long as you don't live in central Tokyo/Osaka/Fukuoka.

Only 20% ... which Companies are still in Russia - perhaps it's name & shame time ?

In the Teikoku Databank Ltd survey of 168 major Japanese firms that operate businesses in Russia, 37 companies said they plan to stop operations there as of March 15 amid a worsening environment due to disruptions in logistics and supply chains.

Bolding is mine. So the article title factually wrong.

It should be "Over 20% of Japan's major firms PLAN to halt Russian businesses: survey"

All change everywhere. France on first round today, second round later with LePenn polling better than last time. Locals in UK, 5th May with Boris expected to be punished severly by his own and now this. Biden is also sidelined and could easily step-down because of health.

The elections in Hungary showed where the wind blows these days. Orban absolutely destroyed the lefties opposition.

United States

Canada

Western Europe (but no oil and gas included)

Australia/New Zealand

Japan

So the vast majority of the world is NOT boycotting Russia.

Probably less nowadays after years of deflation, especially if you are willing to live a bit far from the station.
