A 51-year-old unemployed man has been arrested on suspicion of stealing cash from a donation box at a shrine in Yao City, Osaka Prefecture.

Police said Seiichi Fukuhara has admitted to stealing cash from shrines at least 1,000 times, NTV reported Sunday.

Fukuhara is accused of stealing 2,000 yen in cash from a donation box at a shrine in Yao between July and October of this year.

According to police, Fukuhara used adhesive tape on a thin stick to attach to bills inside the donation box and then remove them.

One of the shrines in Yao that has repeatedly been robbed placed a piece of paper with the words "God is watching you" written on it in the donation box. Fukuhara said he would pick up the paper while he was trying to steal money, then put it back in the box. Police identified him from a fingerprint on the paper
