Nestled deep within the stunning Joetsu National Park, Tanigawadake Tenjindaira Ski Resort is popular for its backcountry terrain and stunning views of the Tanigawa Mountain Range. Starting this season, Hoshino Resorts has renamed the resort Mt. T. The resort features a combination of compact ski runs and vast backcountry opportunities. Though smaller than Japan’s top resorts, Tenjindaira is renowned for its exceptional powder quality.

anigawadake is located between Gunma and Niigata Prefectures. The area is known for significant winter snowfall due to the meeting of Asian and Pacific weather patterns. This unique geographic position not only creates stunning landscapes but also allows for a long ski season at the Tanigawadake Ski Resort. The resort typically operates from early December to April, making it one of the longest ski seasons in Japan.

Several factors contribute to this extended period of excellent skiing conditions. The height of the mountain is important because higher altitudes hold more snow. This snow stays clean and untouched because the cold temperatures last well into spring. The unique geography also aids in maintaining the accumulation of high-quality, powdery snow, which is highly sought after by skiers and snowboarders.

The ski area is relatively compact and manageable. Tenjindaira features ten courses, three chair cars and one lift, giving it a small yet enjoyable layout. One of the standout courses is the Tajirisawa course, which stretches about 3 kilometers. This course skillfully utilizes the mountainous landscape as it descends under the ropeway. On the other hand, at 1502 meters, Tenjin Pass offers an open slope ideal for fresh powder, featuring a maximum gradient of 34 degrees. It’s a prime location for powder skiing with a smooth layout and great skiing response.
