Man arrested on suspicion of killing 10-year-old son

Police in Sapporo have arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of killing his 10-year-old son.

According to police, Shinichi Atsumi, a company employee, has admitted to strangling his son Ritsu at their home in Teine Ward between 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, NHK reported.

Police said Atsumi called 110 and said he had killed his son. Police rushed to the scene and found the boy unconscious. He was taken to hospital where he was confirmed dead.

The cause of death was asphyxiation due to pressure on the neck.

Police said that Atsumi told them he strangled his son with the intention of killing him but has so far given no motive.

At the time, he was home alone with his son. His wife was out.
