The Tokyo Game Show (TGS), held annually at Chiba’s Makuhari Messe, has long been one of the world's most celebrated expos for video games, industry trends and cutting-edge technology. As Japan's flagship gaming event, it has served as a mecca for gamers and industry professionals alike, showcasing the latest in console and PC gaming. However, many longtime attendees have expressed disappointment, feeling that the expo has shifted its focus too heavily toward mobile games, losing some of the appeal it once held for fans of traditional gaming.
Nevertheless, it continues to draw impressive crowds. Tokyo Game Show 2024 will feature a record number of exhibitors and booths. As of September 11, the event has 979 registered exhibitors, surpassing last year’s figures. The show will host 3,252 booths, marking the highest number in its history.
Moreover, 2,299 game titles, including upcoming releases, e-sports, AR/VR and blockchain games will be exhibited. Attendees can also expect to see gaming hardware and B2B technology. The final list of game titles, exhibitor booths and events will be revealed on Sept. 26, the first day of the expo.
The Tokyo Game Show will also once again feature the “Selected Indie 80,” a showcase of 80 handpicked game developers from around the world. These developers will present their projects alongside major industry players, gaining valuable exposure to a global audience.
TGS 2024 kicks off on Sept. 26 with a special talk celebrating PlayStation's 30th anniversary. Ken Kutaragi, the "father of PlayStation," and Katsuhiko Hayashi, a Famitsu Group representative, will discuss the future of gaming in line with this year's theme: "Trailblaze the World with Gaming."
This will be Sony Interactive Entertainment's first time back at TGS since 2019. Playable demos of Astro Bot and Monster Hunter Wilds will be available. While news about the PlayStation 6 is unlikely, there will presumably be discussions about the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro, which is set to retail for ¥119,980 ($849) on Nov. 7 and, presumably, marks the halfway point of the console's lifecycle.
Tokyo Game Show 2024 will run from Sept. 26 to 29. Press days will be held on Sept. 26 and 27, followed by public days on Sept. 28 and 29.
