So much for being tough on China. Probably all forgotten about in the other s-storms the president has unleashed.

TikTok should be banned as long as youtube and facenook are banned in China. Heck, TikTok is banned in China too, which seems like a huge issue to me.

Was lifting the ban in response to a hefty "campaign donation" made to Trump? Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Apparently, Mr. Trump’s “America First” does not apply to apps that he likes despite their harm to Americans.

TikTok has harmed Americans? Please show some evidence.

There's plenty of evidence out there that proves this.

Factual free speech isn't allowed on the platform. Post any facts that aren't flattering to the CCP and your account will be banned. Post any facts that aren't flattering to 95% of other govts and nothing will happen to your account. Different rules for content about the CCP and everyone else. Applying consistent rules is important.

If TikTok is so great, why isn't in used in China too? If TikTok isn't tied to China, why do you care, deanzaZZR, whether it is banned anywhere or not? I'm confused.

@bass Same as any other social media app.

Because China wisely carved out its own internet and apps. Most Chinese are focused on their lives in China. Those who are more curious can easily use a VPN.

China owns TikTok that’s the crux of the problem, so it’s damaging us geopolitically and socially

I have a warm spot in my heart for TikTok.

VPN use inside China is illegal. Use it and the CCP can make any claim they want around espionage or treason. Are you using a VPN now? That means you are performing treasonous activities, unless the CCP is paying for your posts.

Oh ... and if it is OK for China to "wisely carved out its own internet and apps", then why isn't it fine if other countries choose to block Chinese-made and managed internet users AND programs? Certainly, you wouldn't be suggesting different rules only if you are Chinese. That would be racist.

So, is Trump correct now and wrong 5 years ago?

Or is he wrong now and correct 5 years ago?

It can't be both - he's wrong in one of those times

Trump himself has said he got votes from TikTok, so for those who voted for Harris, I'd say it's pretty clear evidence.

The CEO of TikTok openly lied to congress, he should be in jail, instead Trump's giving the company more time? He already said he doesn't want more time and he switched off the service recently.

This saga is a very bad reflection on Trump and Musk, who are always championing free speech, but when it's politicised speech in their favour, all of a sudden it's ok? Not to mention the fact the 1st amendment forbids sacking of government employees for their political views...unless it's sanitised by TikTok instead of Facebook eh?

Trump and Musk, who are always championing free speech, but when it's politicised speech in their favour, all of a sudden it's ok?

Exactly. Seems only their spew is "free speech" and everyone else's is lies, lies, lies.

The more I think about this, the more I want something like the German laws that allow factual free speech, but not personal attacks. Their laws have teeth. Of course, bookface is appealing the law, since it was used to fine them for allowing illegal content uses by fringe people to personally attack people. First office fines are about $3500 for online personal attacks. Discourse for political differences are allowed in German law. Personal attacks are not. Someone got frustrated with a political opponent and name-called that opponent. He was fined.

This is a long way from my stance 20 yrs ago, where I was 100% libertarian and I wanted any speech to be allowed. Lies and 20% truth statements do real harm to our society. We've all seen this from Trump's statements during COVID. His statements nearly doubled the number of deaths inside the US just by causing confusion for people confused by science.

Responsible free speech is what we need in our societies. Seems some people can't be trusted to actually say the truth.
