Wire ropes hanging carp streamers cut in city in Wakayama Prefecture

Three wire ropes hanging carp streamers over the Nade River in Kinokawa City, Wakayama Prefecture have been cut in an act of property damage, police said.

According to police, at around 5:50 a.m. on April 20, a passerby called 110, reporting that the wires of the carp streamers were hanging down, Sankei Shimbun reported. About 60 carp streamers were hanging from three wire ropes that were set up across the river, which is about 50 meters wide. All three were cut on the east side.

The installation of carp streamers is an annual event that has been held by local volunteers since 1998, from mid-April to mid-May, with donations of carp streamers.

Carp streamers are seen all over Japan in the lead-up to Children's Day on May 5.

I always enjoy the koinobori over the local river in my town, as do thousands of others. (It's kinda famous in my prefecture.) Why TH would somebody destroy such a display in their town?

It could just be some idiot teenagers. But, it may just be a person who is somehow connected to the display. Maybe a disgruntled member of the city government or neighborhood committee. Maybe the parent of a child whose koi streamer was rejected. Maybe someone from the area who hates the crowds who come to view it.

I would be interested in what the deal was, if they ever find the culprit.
