A baby has been left for the first time at a "baby hatch" that opened at a hospital in Tokyo’s Sumida Ward on March 31.
The “baby hatch” is for a parent or parents to anonymously leave newborn infants in the care of social welfare agencies.
The baby is in good health, Japanese media quoted sources related to the matter as saying.
The baby hatch at San-ikukai Hospital is the second baby hatch to be set up in Japan. The first one, “Konotori no Yurikago” (stork’s cradle), was opened by Jikei Hospital in Kumamoto City in 2007. Since then, at least 170 abandoned infants have been placed in its care.
San-ikukai Hospital is operated by a social welfare corporation which runs 16 medical facilities in the Kanto region. It has obstetrics and pediatrics departments, and is also designated as a Tokyo Regional Perinatal Maternal and Child Medical Center.
According to San-ikukai, a special room will be set up on the first floor of a ward as a place to leave babies in a basket, NHK reported.
The baby hatch will accept infants up to four months old and there will be a 24-hour monitoring system.
The hospital will take care of the babies for a certain period of time, and then the child consultation center will take the lead in connecting them to infant homes or foster parents.
The hospital said it plans to implement projects, including “confidential childbirth” that allows pregnant women to only reveal their names and contact information to medical staff.
The need for a baby hatch in Tokyo has been growing for several years in response to an increase in unwanted pregnancies from women suffering from poverty or abuse, as well as cases of abandoned babies.
Ahead of the March 31 opening, San-ikukai Hospital director Hitoshi Kato said, "There is no end to tragic incidents such as babies being abandoned or fatally abused. We recognize that this is an urgent measure to prevent such situations. All of our staff would like to work hard in cooperation with government agencies and related private organizations, with the aim of creating a society where this project is not necessary."

Ok. Tested. It works. Now it needs surveillance cameras.

PTL - a child’s life saved - a triumph of life over the culture of disposal. When unborn children are treated like medical waste and motherhood is smeared as a burden, this is fantastic news that shines like a light in the darkness.
To the abortion zealots wringing their hands, cheering for the right to destroy life in the womb and scoff at any alternative that preserves it... claiming to champion “choice,” yet every solution pushed ends in death... this baby hatch proves there is another way - one that honors the child, the mother and the sanctity of life.
THIS is what proper civilization looks like. Mercy, responsibility, and love - not surgical convenience. Life wins. Always.

Nothing but the truth, words of wisdom thanks!!

I hope Japan will change some additional policy like family registration requirements for so many social necessities because children left there haven’t joined. I support the system but the selfishness of the parents or mother to abandon it anonymously has so many related problems to it for the child in a country that places so much importance on family registry

You are aware Japan also provides access to abortion, right? And the morning after pill too. It's very expensive, but still available. Right to choose and all that. A proper civilization indeed.
Jay
"Right to choose"? Choose what, exactly Footloose? Let’s stop dancing around it - you mean the right to kill an innocent unborn child?
Obviously we know the answer to this, but why on earth would you celebrate how efficiently people can dispose of their unborn? And why wouldn't you be more interested in how fiercely they protect their most vulnerable?
Harry_Gatto
And then it will never be used and babies will die.

I guess you missed the point, even with all abortion servicesa and the pill available . Though at times in great hardships there is still those who prefer carrying pregnancy till birth.

Saving a baby is worth it. We don't know the situation the mother is in, this is much better than the alternative news. Baby hatches in all hospitals please!

Abortion, Gay.
No, I mean abortion.
Because an embryo is not a person. That's about it. No amount of dramatic words and appeal to some corrupt morality based on your personal beliefs will change that.

Both are difficult to obtain, especially if you are a single female.

I fully support these hatches because they save lives or save a child from a life of abuse. However, there is still a terrible stigma about adoption in Japan and it is also exclusively expensive. Sadly, these kids are destined to a life in orphanages.

If this means women get more choice in the matter and that fundamentalist religious freaks get less chance to project their primitive, superstitious, goat-herder nonsense to anyone stupid enough to listen, then it can only be a good thing.
Jay
I know this must be awkward for you as the "science" guy, but actual science doesn’t back you up there, buddy. That embryo has its own DNA from the moment of conception, distinct from its mother, with everything biologically in place to develop into a fully formed human being. If left undisturbed, it grows - not into a cat, not into a tree, but into a person.
I think you've just got to go ahead and admit your entire claim rests on your belief that human life only matters once it's reached some arbitrary point you’ve decided is acceptable.
Life begins at conception, fact. That's the rational, biological truth, unfortunately for you.
I'veSeenFootage
Absolutely. Which makes this baby hatch an infinitely better solution than the horrid, actual baby-killing alternative... But making abortion affordable would be best. And also actual sex ed in school.

Japanese need to learn about accepting responsibilities for their actions

Just so there's no confusion here, let's get this straight - are you’re celebrating the deliberate killing of the most defenseless form of human life, and calling it “progress” because it silences people who understand there's something greater than themselves?
Is the idea terminating the unborn what it takes for you to feel “free?” Because, whoa, that's really quite primitive.
I'veSeenFootage
Yes it does.
Meaning it's not a person before it actually grows. We agree then. Good job owning yourself.
For religious zealots, yes. For normal people, things are less clear-cut.

A woman has the right to choose. She may choose to have the baby and then raise it. She may choose to have the baby and then give it up for adoption. She may choose to use the hatch mentioned in this article. If doctors tell her that giving birth risks the life of her and/or the baby, she may choose to follow the advice of an expert and have an abortion.
I don't approve of the idea of abortion for reasons of irresponsibility, but it's not my place to lay down the law.
You want to talk about primitive, look at the US states which have already been directly responsible for the deaths of women by not allowing abortion in any cases at all.

The rights of the mother supersede the rights of the unborn fetus. This is often understood as a balance between the fundamental rights of the pregnant person and the potential rights of the fetus, with the mother's well-being and autonomy being given priority.
In many legal systems, a fetus is not considered a legal person until it is born and demonstrates signs of life. This means it does not have the same rights as a born individual, including the right to life.
International human rights law recognizes the right to life as accruing at birth and emphasizes that prenatal protections must be consistent with women's human rights.

linking the mapill (aka no- ma-pill, in my place) and abortion seems extreme. use of the no-ma-pill does not necessarily halt a birth. Or is every male going to claim inception every time he missed out on a condom thru-out his life. and before I get the dimwit classification. I am aware that they condoms some nasty diseases.

The number of child adoptions every year is less than 50.
Several hundred adults are adopted every year, involve adult men, typically aged between 20 and 30. This practice, known as mukoyōshi, allows family-run businesses to adopt capable male successors, often through marriage to a daughter, ensuring the continuity of the family name and enterprise.
Jay
Actually, no - we don’t agree, and you’ve just owned yourself. See, your logic is this: because it’s in the process of becoming more visibly human, it somehow doesn’t count yet. By that standard, a newborn wouldn’t be a person either - it can’t speak, reason, or survive on its own. Is it okay to kill it too?
EVERYTHING that’s alive grows. That’s literally one its the defining traits of life. An embryo is a person because it's growing, developing, and following a genetically determined path from conception to adulthood. The fact that it’s growing proves it is a living human organism.
The truth is simple: personhood doesn’t suddenly materialize when it becomes convenient for you, buddy!
Tokyo Guy
EVERYTHING that’s alive grows.
Guess that makes your mindset pretty dead, as you've been repeating the same tired garbage on here for ages. As long as you are a slave to the opiate of the masses, you'll never progress to being able to think for yourself.
Do you have a single original thought of your own? I very much doubt it; you're like what would happen if you asked ChatGPT to create the ultimate raging, religious cliché and give it legs.

Abortions in Japan are available according to the conditions of the Maternal Protection Law, and up to 21 weeks and 6 days of pregnancy (in other words, within 21 weeks and 6 days after the start of the last menstrual period). After 22 weeks, abortions cannot be conducted in Japan unless it is medically necessary.
Any change in the law would require a Bill from the Diet.
Gaijinjland
This has nothing to do with abortion. So people on both sides of the aisle need to cool down. It’s good that after a child has been born, a life has been saved. Too bad Japan makes it nearly impossible to adopt. My ex wife and I tried to adopt for 3 years. Ruined our marriage. Every time we got a call about a prospective baby, anticipation, heartache and my ex went into a downward spiral.
Ironically, remarried and had a daughter and couldn’t be happier on a personal level… but I still feel bad for the thousands of children in “centers” who will never be adopted. But that’s be

A little semantics. Existence, life if you will. But not personhood.

One thing is certain: there's a bit much mansplaining going on here.
