Police officer indicted for molesting teenage girl on train, taking upskirt images of other women

Osaka Prefectural Police have sent papers to the prosecutors office on a 45-year-old former police inspector who was arrested on suspicion of molesting a teenage girl on a train and possessing voyeuristic images of other women.

According to police, the suspect — who has since resigned — touched a teenage girl's buttocks while on a train at around 8 a.m. on March 13, Sankei Shimbun reported. He is also accused of filming up the skirts of 14 women at train stations and other locations between February 17 and March 12.

Just before the March 13 incident, a security guard noticed the inspector acting suspiciously, looking at various commuters at a station. The guard boarded the same train as the suspect to keep an eye on him and detained him after he saw him touch the girl.

Videos and photos of the incidents were on the suspect’s smartphone, police said.

An Osaka Prefectural Police spokesperson told a news conference on Wednesday: “This is unspeakable behavior for a police officer. We will strive to prevent it from happening again.”

How often do we hear about police officers, public officials, and other trusted community members committing sexual crimes in public in Japan? How many of these cases do we never hear about?

Most people are unaware of how widespread sexual assault is in Japan, especially on trains.

Without public awareness or international pressure, Japan’s hidden and shameful epidemic will persist, and thousands more women will suffer—often for the rest of their lives.

Were you expecting an actual figure or just trying to make it sound like a bier problem than it actually is?

I wonder if he came up with the usual odd sounding excuses that we hear.

Nah...Happens all the time.

We will strive to prevent it from happening again.”

Sure you will. Of course.

Ya think?

In 2018, Human Rights Watch reported that over 95% of incidents of sexual violence in Japan are not reported to police. Japanese govt and independent groups have similar results.

Well, "I stabbed them, but didn't intend to kill them" wouldn't apply. So, probably.

"Unspeakable," yes, but not unusual, behavior.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but does this say: Police?

A policeman eh! What a surprise!

This sick and twisted sexual deviant needs removing from the streets for a ruddy long time.

The troubling thing is, a victim in this situation would be powerless. Who is she going to complain to? You think she would go to the police station after being traumatized by the police? And look at the history on his smartphone, he obviously had been at it for some time. The question arises as to if any other police officers may be abusing their position in this way.

Japan's cops protect and serve, themselves.

It's highly unlikely that he was wearing his uniform, so she wouldn't know he was a policeman until he was arrested. Which he was.

How dare you come at us with your rational, evidence-backed logic—intruding on our echo chamber of beliefs, bias, and blissful ignorance about Japan!

Oh, then its alright then. Thank goodness for that. It sounded much more horrible than it actually was.

Police & teachers have the worst track records regarding reprehensible behaviour.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

Why would such person stop ?

Japznese girls are so cute showing everywhere and no one will step to give a life lesson.

It does not happen so often in other countries because there is physical retaliation. Life is life.

I doubt he is risking much of time spent in prison and will carry on sooner than later.

No, they are just the ones that make it to the news because it's of public 'interest'.

Nobody cares that on the same day, there were hundreds of other sexual assault victims in Japan who will receive no attention or justice and are left to suffer in silence.

I understand the attraction and even the urge, but you gotta resist it man!

Didn't report to the police, but they reported to Human Rights Watch. uh-huh. gotcha.

Kudos to the guard who has the ability to pick this guy and follow them.

Scary to think what these creeps get away with when there doesn't happen to be a dedicated guard nearby.
