People are upset that the photo was changed because they trust that everything in the media is 100% factually accurate. They feel betrayed. I feel betrayed 8-).

Seriously, I don't understand why it's wrong since it's only clothing that was altered. Changing the faces to make them look younger would be wrong.

"...the government has taken steps such as drafting guidelines for firms to avoid potential issues."

If I were living in Japan, I'd want more information about these "steps" being taken by the government. Are the steps to help citizens, government, or companies?

As a Gajin I hate to see them go. I always attributed combini providing these seats as a part of the cultural politeness of Japan. I knew it was costing the store some lost revenue to let someone sit for a few minutes and relax.

@Fos

"Perhaps spending less money on military equipments will provide more money for social issues, decoupling from the policies of Japan's main ally, United States of America, will give people more reason to find happiness, culturally and morally."

Decouple from the US AND spend less on military, you'll be speaking Chinese in less than 10 years' time.

To me, having been touched for entire flights by the bodies of people who can't contain their fat within the envelop of one seat, I am for some form of "body width" and/or weight requirement. I've had people's fat ooze under the armrest and press against me. Or they are just so large the armrest presses into their upper body and fat comes over the top. Sorry people this is not "shaming", these are facts from my life.

If a person can't fit horizontally into their own seat and its air space, they should have to buy a second seat. I don't want their sweating body against me for hours.

Posted in: Is Nagoya the best place to live in Japan? See in context

After visiting Japan from the US many times, I can definitely say arriving at Chubu Centrair in Nagoya is sooo much easier for us foreigners than Haneda and Narita. The airport is so easy to navigate, and transportation options are easy by bus or train into central Nagoya.

The smaller size of Nagoya vs Tokyo makes everything less stressful. Even though train/subway stations can be busy in Nagoya, it's not nearly as bad as what I've experienced in Tokyo. The people in Nagoya don't seem to get upset that us foreigners may need a moment to understand what to do or where to go. In Tokyo, they seem irritated very quickly if we pause anyone else. I understand they are in a hurry, but they must understand we are in a system we may have very little experience navigating.

Nagoya seems to be a big city with more small-town feeling. I like it.

Kind of ironic there's a story about potato chip flavored fried chicken just below this story.

I live in the US and am not overweight at 67 years old. I rarely eat at fast food places, or even restaurants in general. If I did, I'd probably be overweight also. Even eating at home, you still have to be careful about what you put in your shopping cart. All kinds of hidden ingredients that can cause weight gain.

The diet of most Americans is terrible. It's as simple as that.

"So who's leading the polls these days?"

Trump is leading in the electoral count. They are basically tied otherwise, with Trump currently having a slight lead in most of the swing States.

So, overall, slight advantage to Trump but the popular vote could easily go either way.

Posted in: Sept. 20, 2024: Marijuana criminalization, whale meat, elders over 100, Shogun and Japanese sushi See in context

I live in the US, so I won't comment on Japan's decision to criminalize. Not my business.

But seven years is excessive. Since the law is aimed to keep younger people "on the right course in life", let's say the average person they will catch is 21 years old. They'll be 28 when released. That means they will have spent 25% of their life behind bars for smoking a bit of marijuana. That can't be fair punishment for such a low-level crime, and they may exit prison with a whole new (worse) outlook on life and be more likely to become a career criminal.

I created a new account to make this comment. For my job I traveled to Japan about 50 times in years 2002-2017. I have also travel to England, France, Italy, and Switzerland. Often, I was in locations where I was unsure about train or subway travel or bus.

I want to say Japanese people were the most helpful of any country I have visited. Some give help before I asked for help. I understand many Japanese don't like to try to speak English even when they have some English skill. So, I very much appreciate their effort. I have only minor Japanese language skill. Therefore I am also nervous about speaking in Japanese.

I wish for good things for all Japanese people and the Country of Japan.
