The US cannot supply Japan with the millions of items it can't or does not make. Japan does not impose tariffs on imported American goods.
Sorry, that's just incorrect. Take beef meat for example. 2025 tariff rate for beef entering Japan from the US is 21.6%. There are many others listed in the US-Japan Trade Agreement of 2020:

Many people who go to prison in the US for crimes on children get jailhouse justice carried out on them. For example, if you go to prison for a sex crime against child your life expectancy is very much reduced in some prisons. If you're not in segregation, you will be punished and possibly killed by other prisoners.
Even convicts don't tolerate crime on children. I hope he gets what he deserves whether experts find him insane or not.

grc, the headline is correct. It's saying the people 'with scruples" (good morals) paid their tolls already.

Posted in: Gov't panel urges more tariff-free rice be used for human consumption See in context
The panel under the Finance Ministry recommended that the quota system should be managed more flexibly to respond to demand from private companies and households, saying the move would support stable domestic supply.
The article doesn't explain so well for us foreigners why the imported rice is primarily used for animal feed, but the above statement makes it seem the Gov't dictates it be used for animals. However, since some of the rice is eaten by humans, I must assume the rice meets standards for human consumption. Therefore, I have to assume the Gov'ts intention is just to protect rice farmers income.
I understand protecting farmers, but maybe there should be a price point and harvest minimum where "emergency allocations due to domestic shortages" are implemented and the US rice can be purchased for consumption by humans. Seems reasonable.

Was the body showing signs she'd been dead for a while? If not, poor woman has possibly been held captive.
What were the nature of the injuries? Inflicted by self or others or fall on rocks, struck by vehicle,...? Basically, the question to ask would be was she murdered or did she die by suicide(jump from cliff)?
My sympathy to the family. She was too young to die.

I understand Ishiba san is trying to look strong to help his reputation in Japan, but it's unwise for him to make anything other than positive comments ahead of these negotiations. Such as "I am very much looking forward to the negotiations and expect a very positive outcome for both Japan and the US".
To make a statement implying no progress will be made on a top US pet peeve is not a good start to your trip.

To those asking why the gun "wasn't caught at US x-ray machine", I'm sure it was "caught" but it was in a checked bag so it's not illegal or a danger to the flight.
Another story on JT recently covered this topic. It is the traveler's responsibility to ensure the Country of destination gun and knife laws, not the Country from which you leave. Basically, it was his responsibility to know bringing the gun and knife was illegal in Japan, not US airport authority.

Chinese are more resilient than Americans, just look at how both countries faired during covid.
The Chinese government physically barricaded their residents into their apartment buildings. People were out on balconies yelling for help. Millions died.
As for the Nikkei and the NYSE daily fluctuations, they've been going on since their inception and will continue long after Trump is gone from this earth. There is too much attention paid to daily change.

Off topic but won't be moderated because it is derogatory towards the US. Article is not about US tariffs.
You really need to expand your thinking beyond "everything is Trump's fault". You and GuruMick and others are always saying you want the US and it's military to go away. What's the replacement plan? The article is based on a "growing threat from China" in the region and provides a potential long term security support for Japan. Is that not a good thing in your paradigm? Are you willing to risk Japan being attacked just to get the US out of Japan?

The U.S. has been the top destination by country for Japanese tourists for years... The weak yen – not Trump – is likely the biggest factor dampening the attraction of the U.S., said Takaaki Mitamura, a spokesperson for Tokyo-based travel agent Veltra Corp.
Typical click bait. It's economics keeping Japanese and politics keeping a few Europeans from visiting the US. And, oh no! A 1% drop in arrivals from China. Their just AP writers who are speculating on a drop even though:
The National Travel and Tourism Office gave a rosier forecast last month for international travel to the U.S. Based on 2024 travel patterns, the office said it expected arrivals to increase 6.5% to 77.1 million this year and surpass 2019 levels in 2026.
They have some anecdotal stories about people upset about Pres Trumps remarks regarding Greenland, and also a few other disgruntled Europeans.

The stock markets always over-react to drama. The traders live and die with being "ahead of the pack" and therefore jump at any perceived downturn. Of course, the tariff back and forth will cause some downturn, but the "sky is falling" is not an appropriate reaction to what has been done. It's easily reversible.
Nibek32Today 08:17 pm JST
People are becoming optimistic about leaving the US behind and building new relationships.
I don't think they are, but I'm fine with it if it happens. The US needs to focus on the US for a while and not on the needs of so many other countries. The US has "meddled" in too many places and tried too hard to set direction for others.
We can't continue to spend so much money on social programs, medical and food/shelter, economic development,... for in other countries. USAID was a giant cash cow for non-governmental offices to spend as they pleased. No doubt there were hundreds of billions wasted. I'm sure that money has in some cases delayed the development of more sustainable solutions to the problems in some countries: welfare/living off charity is a trap.
Had USAID been run correctly and funded at a lower level it could still be viable.

I am very pleased with the direction Trump has taken. He now has the attention of all the remora countries who have been clinging to the US taxpayer via trade deficits. Trump knows the US is on the verge of financial problems due to national debt/looming credit limits. This is the "medicine" necessary to prevent a US and global economic meltdown.
The US economy must be strong for other countries to thrive.

Good comments. I believe Trump definitely used the 4 year gap between 45 and 47 to come up with his strategy.
Will it work? I hope so since the US has been headed towards the crapper for many years. Those midterm elections loom large and are the driver behind the accelerated pace of his policy changes. I'm sure he would have rather had 4 years rather than 12-18 months to roll all of this out.

Americans will pay the trump car tax because they really do not want to buy a crappy American car that will catch on fire by itself.
By "crappy American car" do you mean Camry, Sienna, Tundra, Corolla,... Those are all made in the US. I assume you want to restrict your "crappy" description to Ford, GM, and Chrysler.
Americans still have many good choices if Japan made vehicles get out of their price range due to tariffs.
BTW, Toyota has already announced it will not be passing along the tariff increases to customers.
