A top Trump administration official on Sunday shrugged off a July Fourth parade by masked white supremacists in Washington as an example of "messy" democracy that fell under the banner of constitutionally protected free speech.
"Certainly what they stand for is nothing that I could possibly agree with. But one of the foundational principles of the United States, which makes democracy messy, is free speech," Interior Secretary Doug Burgum told CNN's "State of the Union" talk show.
In striking scenes as Americans celebrated the nation's 250th birthday on Saturday, hundreds of masked men carrying Confederate battle flags or U.S. flags and sporting logos of the white supremacist Patriot Front movement were seen marching through parts of Washington, shouting "Reclaim America!"
Wearing a uniform of tan pants and hats and dark blue shirts, and apparently led by the neo-fascist group's founder Thomas Rousseau, the masked men crowded onto the city's Metro system, gathered outside Union Station train station and marched towards Capitol Hill.
Asked by CNN whether he would condemn the group and what they stand for, and whether he would urge President Donald Trump to do the same, Burgum couched his language carefully.
"There are plenty of things that I see that I might personally find offensive, irreprehensible (sic). But in America, free speech is allowed" under the U.S. Constitution, the interior secretary said, going on to decry progressive candidates who were running for election as "communists" in the United States.
Washington's Metropolitan Police Department said the white nationalist group marched briefly through neighborhoods around the U.S. Capitol and left the city before 11:00 am.
"MPD recognizes the rights of individuals to peacefully express their views and remains committed to maintaining public safety and security for DC residents and visitors," a police spokeswoman said in a statement reported by U.S. media.
Several videos have emerged online showing the Patriot Front members marching through Washington on Saturday. In one video circulated by Republican Senator Mike Lee, a man who appears to be hosting a live stream showing the gathering outside Union Station describes it as a "total Aryan victory."
The Patriot Front was founded in the aftermath of a deadly "Unite the Right" rally in 2017 that brought torch-bearing white nationalists from all over the country to Charlottesville, Virginia.
That rally culminated in an avowed white supremacist driving a car into counter-protesters, killing one woman and injuring 19 other people.
Trump infamously took 48 hours to respond to the violence, and then said there were "very fine people on both sides" of the protests, drawing widespread criticism.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, a legal advocacy group that tracks extremism in the U.S., describes the Patriot Front as a white nationalist hate group that "focuses on theatrical rhetoric and activism."
In a new counterterrorism strategy released in May, the Trump administration identified "violent leftwing extremists" as among three major types of terror threats that the country faces.
This marked a break from the previous administration of Democrat Joe Biden, which had identified far-right fringe groups, particularly those espousing white supremacy, as a major threat.

MAGA's Brave New World.
Looks like today's KKK minus the coned hoods. It's always easier for cowards to do despicable things when you're hiding behind masks. Not all that different from the ICE agents breaking laws with their masks on, especially the really bad ones.
Brought to you by Donald J. Trump & Co.

Yes, Mr. Burgum, and that includes the free speech right to condemn hate speech.

The Trump administration's response tells you all you need to know.
masked far-right racists - shrug
left-wing radicals - major terror threat

CNN has found their new obsessive narrative, congratulations.
so…what did this group actually DO?
Ride public transportation, walk around, get their picture taken, go home before lunch?
sakurasuki
Like it or not that's a form of freedom of expression.
OssanAmerica
History will look back at this as another aspect of the Trump years. America spent decades overcoming it's racism and one man undid everything.
TaiwanIsNotChina
I bet the neo-KKK'ers in the photo here had a fun time experiencing the flaming metro cars of Trump's metro.
mikeylikesit
Not an impression. The SPLC has literally been paying these groups and coordinating with them for years to stage events that the SPLC then used to raise money for the supposed purpose of combatting the very groups that the SPLC was funding.
Combine this with how much the FBI has been embedded in and fronting such groups, and, yes, they were handing out cash and outfits somewhere.
wallace
Trump said communism is a threat to America. Fake opinions. The real threat is groups like this white supremacist one. They look very threatening.
Blacklabel
yet what did they DO yesterday?
wallace
Why do they need to hide their faces?
Bob Fosse
so, die hard maga won’t condemn these cowards? Just whaddabout Antifa. No surprise.
SeekShinJitsu
These White Supremacists are knuckleheads. May not have caused any physical damage, but they possess dangerous idelogies. That should be the end of the story.
It's rediculous the Right has to cope throughout this thread when articles like this are posted.

Nazis.

Free speech of any kind is fine. However, any group, whether it be this Patriot Front, or Antifa, should not be wearing masks, nor brandishing guns. Use your voice to be heard, but not to intimidate.
bass4funk
Nothing to do with MAGA, the only difference is, in America all voices can be heard whether one side likes them or not, if radical socialists can run around telling people that robbing Paul to give to Peter is the best thing, then these misguided people can talk about whites wanting to uplift their people and believe in racial purity. It's a free country.
Very different, ICE is an immigration enforcement agency and yes, they wear masks since radicals on the left are prone to doxxing people doing their jobs
No, the 1st amendment written in the Constitution of the United States
plasticmonkey
Brought by the Trump DOJ because they don't like the SPLC's stand against fascists.
Stop distorting the facts and stop changing the subject with your whataboutisms.
Back to the story. What do you think about masked white supremacists marching en masse chanting "Reclaim America"? Given America's history with the KKK, this is surely an act of racial intimidation. We know it's constitutionally protected "speech", but don't you find it morally repugnant?
Taciturn
Hiding their faces and hiding in the safety of numbers. What a bunch of cowards. Gross.
patkim
So what? ICE agents are not threatened at gun points to accept their jobs. They do so willingly and know that there are perils that go along with it. Law enforcement don't wear masks and yet accept the doxxing that may come their way. The radical right is always doxxing politicians, but they don't wear masks. Even soldiers, Marines, Airmen, Guardsmen, etc. don't wear masks, yet face threats of doxxing. Yet, only ICE agents are so weak-minded that they need to hide behind a mask.
Also, I'm sorry, but ICE agents constantly banging and even breaking people's car windows, racially profiling and harassing anyone of color, and even mistakenly breaking into lawful U.S. citizens homes is not part of their job descriptions; nor should it be.
patkim
I think we all know why people hide their faces by wearing masks. When they know what they are doing is wrong, they hide their faces. It's like when you see some criminals on TV, try to cover their faces from being seen. Wearing masks to be anonymous just emboldens people to do illegal things.
wallace
White Supremacists and their ideology are a danger to democracy. They seek to exclude non-white sections of society.
White supremacist ideologies inherently seek to establish and maintain dominance over minority groups. In practice, this leads to the disenfranchisement of voters, the rollbacks of civil rights protections, and systemic discrimination.
Both the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security consistently classify white supremacy as the deadliest domestic terrorist threat in the United States. Groups often mobilize violence to intimidate ethnic and religious minorities and undermine local and federal government institutions.
Bob Fosse
White supremacists should be mocked and condemned, always and without question. If you can’t do that it reflects very poorly on you.
Vanillasludge
Good guys don’t need to hide their faces.
BB
If they are wearing masks to cover their faces then it's clear that even they know they're behaving in a shameful, hateful manner. It may be true they didn't cross the line into violence, but they're also pushing to normalize anonymous thuggery, which should be called out by the administration.
plasticmonkey
OK. What is your opinion of Patriot Front's ideology?
bass4funk
No, this is not consistently or accurately true in the way stated, particularly in recent years. While FBI and DHS assessments from roughly 2017–2023 frequently highlighted Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists (RMVEs) primarily those espousing white supremacist ideology—as among the most persistent and lethal domestic terrorism threats (often the top concern in terms of plotted or executed lethal attacks in certain periods), this has been framed more nuancedly over time.

Yeah, not worth the paper it's written on anymore.
I thought they all hated wearing masks anyway?
bass4funk
I put these idiots in the same category as Antifa, BLM, La Raza, NBP, the Klan etc, all of them should be shunned and flushed down the toilet, they are all the same of the opposite sides of the coin spewing racial division and hate.

Your AI chatbot simply states that the current government has toned down its concern about white supremacists. ("Stand back, and stand by.")
The fact remains that these groups are the most dangerous terrorist threat within the U.S.
Garthgoyle
Communism is not a threat to USA.
Empires fall from within.
The real threat is those who say they believe and fight for democracy and American citizens, but do exactly the opposite of that with every word they say and every action they take. That's the real threat to the USA.
Just like the current president, and just like cult members have already shown again and again, including those in JT forums,
wallace
Tens of millions fought and died fighting the Nazi ideology.
bass4funk
No ChatBot, that's just the actual facts, easy to find
No, they're not and that's been so overly debunked. The most dangerous threats come from unpredictable lone actors radicalized online or by personal grievances, across multiple ideologies (racial, anti-government, and mixed). The Government focus is on capabilities and intent to commit lethal violence, not ranking ideologies in a fixed hierarchy. Foreign terrorist-inspired homegrown violent extremists add another layer. They cover all racial spectrums.
It is not only a threat, it is the most existential threat to the entire Republic.
NorwegianboyEE
I wonder if they would say the same about the SA's street thugs in Weimar Germany and the rise of the Nazi party there.
Bob Fosse
McCarthyism is the epitome of political witch-hunts. It was nearly 80 years ago but you think there are still communists prevalent throughout American society?
You’re being played.
wallace
Where is your evidence for that? There are so few in the US.
funkymofo
Cultists defending masked white supremacists- happy birthday US.lol
WoodyLee
When people cover their faces with full masks, dark glasses and a cap that is hiding their identity, that has nothing to do with democracy or freedom of expression, that person is up to no good anyway you look at it.
They can wear anything they want but when coming in groups to public event face covered that is BAD NEWS, kids get scared, elderly people get nervus, and the general public gets intimidated.
Such actions should be outlawed for the very obvious reasons.

Another branch of the insurrectionists wave We the People of the United States of America abhor. They are aided and abetted by the same folks who participated in the attack on the United States Capitol on January 6, 2021.
Whatever crimes they commit against the United States of America will be reward- ed by a pardon and bonuses paid by the U S taxpayer.
